Obviously the stated goal is unobjectionable but... that doesn't mean Apple just gets to scan and collect information about every image you store or see on your phone. This stuff is best left to law enforcement rather than AI vigilantism. What's next, automatically snapping a picture at fixed intervals to check if you're currently abusing a minor?

I wouldn't want to be the poor Apple employee who gets to check all suspect images... and I don't get how this can even pretend to respect your privacy when you could literally have your nudes sent to an Apple employee for review. I mean, what happens if a minor has explicit photos of themselves on their phone for whatever reason (which I would strongly discourage, by the way)? Do those get automatically collected and looked at by Apple for their ""safety""?

I would be ok with just the warnings being locally displayed, after all if it's all local then no harm can be done. anything more is an unacceptable invasion of privacy in my opinion.

Love how "Big Tech" along with the MSM are acting like the unofficial 4th and 5th branches of US government.

There was a time when technology gave me such optimism and hope for humanity. Instead, I'm finding it being abused to subjugate instead.

Ah, the ignorance and naivete of my youth. 😩

ah yes, because there has never been a false positive in any AI detection or algorithmic process.

it's the classic "think of the children" excuse.
any other company would be crucified on the spot for using anything as a justification to scan through your devices and photos, so Apple should too.

The comments in this thread makes me fear for the future of humanity.

"Yeah a private company using cameras in our homes to determine what we are allowed to do and when sounds good. It's for a good cause after all!"
"I hope this system extends to other things as well!"

This is bad. This is really bad. This is the dystopian nightmare shit that people used to joke about. We should be against this, very strongly.

What do you think the root cause is?

Well, the primary reason is every single time it ends in pages and pages of just 2-4 users spamming the same arguments over and over again. This leaves no room for the rest to share their opinion or have an actual discussion that is more relevant to the topic.

PCGuy_5960 reacted to Sauron in Safety as DLC? Motorcycle Airbag vest will not deploy if you miss a payment
It's probably legal because you don't strictly need one of these with a functional airbag to ride a motorcycle and meet safety regulations. I'd never buy a piece of clothing tied to a subscription though, let alone one that is meant as a safety device. At least this seems to offer a straight up buying option...

Also from a technical standpoint the idea of critical security equipment requiring an internet connection to function rings all sorts of alarm bells. What if you pay but the activation servers are down or the activation system is bugged and doesn't work at any point?

Doesn't change the fact that the vest should do what you paid for it to do

    Jesus, is this real?

There should be no way that this should be allowed. Like, seriously, I should be able to use the product if I already paid for it. This honestly makes me sick

PCGuy_5960 reacted to WereCat in Valve to start charging 1$ a month for better CSGO statistics
    I have to agree.
That is as long as a free alternatives exist out there and Valve won't go after them.

For example the SBMM that was recently shut down by Activision.
Have they provided bulk of the stats for free? Well, yes but they've also hidden the more advanced stuff behind a pay wall.

And there are many of such a "free" stat tracking websites and often the stats are not even that accurate.

Getting that info from 1st party is so much better and people are already paying for the less accurate stuff so why shouldn't Valve claw back at this market?

I don't like it but at the same time it doesn't affect anybody whose is not already paying. To those people it may even look like a good deal.

I don't see the issue. If you're competitive, or play it enough to really need those stats, I'd say you owe them a little money.

I'm sorry, but you're being hyperbolic and mixing a grain of truth with some fabrications.

Games do bug you at times. But many of them don't constantly harass you. and certainly not until you've spent "hundreds of dollars." Fortnite, for example, hints that life would be easier with a season pass. But it's not throwing that in your face with constant notifications or other disruptions.

And it's explicitly false that developers are "only willing to consider iOS" for monetization. This isn't 2010. Many of the biggest games are Android-centric titles like Honour of Kings and PUBG Mobile. Now, piracy and farming are concerns, and if it's a old-school game where in-app purchases aren't the main business model... yeah, iOS tends to win. But this is 2021, and there are huge gaming empires built primarily on Android communities.

Don't see much of a point honestly, tactical shooters like valorant are either ruined by aim assist or pretty much unplayable with anything other than a mouse and keyboard. Could be cool for those who have bottom-tier PCs but still want to play valorant, I guess.
