Valve are actual geniuses. They circumvented the loot box ban by adding 2 more steps to the process. xD

I've seen a few posts about this, I still don't understand. Can someone ELI5 ??

Basically instead of opening a case (loot box) you "scan" it and if you want, you can claim the item for the price of 1 key (€2.2 i think). The item you scanned is stuck in the scanner until you claim it, so you can't keep scanning cases until you get what you want. The scanner is preloaded with a skin that you have to buy in order to start scanning cases.

Basically, it's the exact same loot box system, but you have to pay $2 to even start opening cases and you can see the item that you are getting before paying money.

    ah ok, I get it.

So basically, you know EXACTLY what is inside a case, and if you want to continue, you HAVE to buy the case in the scanner even if it's not worth the price of the key.

But I don't know if it's really bypassing the law. It could still be considered against the spirit of the law (France is kinda harsh against corps trying to bypass their laws, no?)

Oh, I forgot to mention, you can't buy cases in France anymore. (Although, you can probably still trade for them)

I think this also helps bypass the law, not sure tho.

@wkdpaul well theoretically you are not buying random stuff anymore, you just buy exactly what you see, just like buying something from an actual store. The fact that you are forced to buy it in order to buy something else is probably a legit way as you can see at the example of cars, where you have to get the "Climate Package" which includes dozens of stupid features you don't need even though you just wanted an a/c.
