Damn it Microsoft, get your shit together

This is why I'm not going to install any of the patches until they fix those issues. -_-

    According to https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/01/bad-docs-and-blue-screens-make-microsoft-suspend-spectre-patch-for-amd-machines/ though, it appears to be more AMD's fault

    After investigating, Microsoft has determined that some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown.

    This is an unusual act of buck-passing.

    It's not entirely clear what the documentation error is. There are some reports that users with very old AMD processors are seeing crashes because the Windows kernel is trying to use an instruction that the very earliest 64-bit AMD chips didn't support. It's not clear if this is the cause of suspension, but the bulk of the complaints do seem to concern older chips, so it's certainly possible.

    While this doesn't help those who are affected, everything seems fine on my end.

    @Cinnabar Sonar Well, you're using a Threadripper CPU, which isn't an Athlon or even a year old (not to mention that it's a freaking laser shark of a chip).  Most of the processors they're talking about were made before 2010.  In my opinion, a lot of these people already needed some sort of upgrade.  It was only a matter of time before those Athlons would hit the end of the road.

    Although...can I expect a drop in the performance of my i5-7200u with this update?  I heard some stuff about IPC reductions a week or two ago.

    the patch itself became a bigger burden to the user than the vulnerability is to the system.

    @techstorm970 It's not an Athlon-only problem though :S

    it won't be just Athlons, there are others on the Microsoft answers forum complaining of similar issues with intel,  but so far some have been able to start in safe mode and uninstall the update then block and restart.

    As for the drop in performance:

    Nope ;)

    @Tech_Dreamer So true!
