if there is power just run fiber. there is a reason everyone uses fiber for this. you can use cheap multimode fiber and if a switch that supports it is out of the budget, just get two cheap media converters

Lurick got a reaction from da na in What can the company that sent the activation code to windows 11 do?
The worst they could see if it was a volume license key with a KMS or similar is some basic information about the computer but in no case can they access your computer unless you install software which allows that.

Lurick reacted to Spotty in YouTube trying to combat fake/AI content?
*tin foil hat*
YouTube is only introducing this so when they use YouTube videos to train Google's own video generation AI it allows them to easily filter out AI generated content that may be less desirable as training data.

Lurick got a reaction from Fat Cat11997 in Can better antennas help wtith ping on pc?
DNS does not impact ping.
DNS takes, for example, google.com and translates it to an IP address. That mapping is then cached locally on your machine for a period of time.
-
Lurick reacted to Eigenvektor in Can better antennas help wtith ping on pc?
DNS has absolutely nothing to do with ping.
If the DNS server you're using is slow, the initial lookup that resolves a host name to an IP might take more time. Which means initial connection to the game server might take longer than usual.
But once the IP has been resolved and a connection has been made, DNS is no longer involved in the communication at all. So the ping you're seeing while in game is completely independent from DNS.
If ping is higher than before, there are multiple possible explanations. Maybe the game server moved to a different location that is further away. Maybe the game server has more load than before. Maybe your ISP or any intermediate ISP changed their routing and there are now more hops between you and the server.

Lurick got a reaction from RockSolid1106 in Under 14? No social media for you!
Ah yes the old "ban things I don't like" method.
Define social media, please, and do it in detail.
Should we ban social gatherings in person as well because someone might get hurt?
How about we ban text messaging since people can still be attacked that way. While we are at it let's just ban all forms of communication and the internet as a whole because it's been shown nobody can use it responsibly....
OR how about we stop this "ban everything" horse crap and take a holistic approach to addressing the root cause of the damn issue? Because that's complicated and can't be used for political grandstanding. We need easy "wins" for the votes, not actual wins for the people.
This law reeks of nonsense, first it's "the parents should be in charge of their children and supervise them" and from the exact same fucking side its now "upload identity verification to a third party website if you want access to websites because the government needs to know you're safe". This will have the same impact as banning other things, it won't work, people will still get access, people will still be exploited, and nothing will change for the better in the end.

So now I'm going to have to give my personal information to whatever social media site that still wants to operate in Florida? I guess companies are just gonna move out of Florida instead.

Lurick reacted to Elizabeth Grey in LMG Sponsor Complaints
I would really appreciate it if next time you specified whether a sponsor deal is only available in certain regions. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to get the Green Man Gaming deal while so many people said it worked fine. So I spent time troubleshooting and eventually contacted support, who eventually told me it was not available in my region.

Diagram would be good if possible, but at a minimum, a few examples of source/destination IPs would be needed

Lurick reacted to LAwLz in Please leave my walled garden alone
It's not a situation where it is either Apple or pharmaceutical companies. They could do both. What you are doing here is called a "fallacy of relative privation".
But it is most likely easier to tell Apple "hey, stop deliberately making it hard for users to leave your ecosystem" than it is trying to reform the field of medical research. Making changes to IP law for medical stuff could have devastating effects as well if not done carefully and correctly. Telling Apple that they have to support RCS, or telling Apple to stop restricting what developers can communicate to their users for example is way easier and far less risky.

Lurick reacted to LAwLz in Please leave my walled garden alone
The good thing about opening things up is that you still get to stay in the walled garden if you want and enjoy all those benefits. It's just that others who may not feel exactly like you could also benefit in some other ways.
If you want an analogy, it's like if some restaurant added some vegan options to their menu, while keeping all the old stuff there as well. Just because the restaurant now has more options and can appeal to more people doesn't mean you have to order the new stuff. You can keep ordering the old non-vegan meals if you want.

As long as they aren't using the same cookware to cook vegetables that they use to cook my steak, I'm happy.

Lurick reacted to GuiltySpark_ in Wi-Fi question
You'll need another PC with working internet and a thumb drive.
This is annoying but something we have to do with everyone who buys that board. Gigabyte, for some reason, released 6, yes 6 variants of that board. They primarily changed the Wifi chip in each revision, for some reason.
You'll need to tell us what revision of B650 Gaming X AX that you have. From 1.0 through 1.5.
The best place to go would be the sticker on the motherboards box, it'll say something like "Rev 1.5" probably near a barcode. if not, you'll need to see if its stamped on the bottom left of the motherboard.

You'll need to transfer it to the new PC with a flash drive or similar, unzip it and run the installer.

Lurick reacted to GuiltySpark_ in Wi-Fi question
Wifi doesn't just happen if the PC is in the house. If you have your wifi card's drivers installed you have to enable it in Windows then select your network / insert your password.
