All my non-OneDrive files were just deleted after upgrading to Windows 1809. I've got it all backed up but just be careful
It seems like this is hit or miss as well.

That's why it's important to have regular backups! Good job on that!
And yeah, it's a known issue with the 1809 update ;

@TVwazhere Yup, anything in the user directory that's not on OneDrive. Photos, documents, other folders, etc. all wiped of contents
-
@TVwazhere yeah, check the link I just posted.
i personally have a few cloud accounts for different things (OneDrive and GDrive) and the rest is backed up on my NAS and a small external HDD that I plug once a month.
It's still a pain to have that happen though!

At work I only have CrashPlan, OneDrive, and Windows Backup to external HDD at the file level and via weekly snapshots
At home it's that with a NAS backup which also backs up to CrashPlan and another location

It's much easier nowadays to back stuff up... and cheaper. Last time I lost some important data IIRC was around 2004, since then I have been militant in my backup strategy, and when I finally got a NAS back a few years plus ago it became even simpler
I probably still have somewhere (maybe on CD/DVD) a very early version of gparted and such, as I was also a software hog, just in case I needed stuff, lol... at the time I didn't have access to anything other than my own PC, no other family members had one even, except my eldest brother but he lived too far away for it to be any help. Anyway, after that fail I remembered to make backups more often and had a system image ready for re-install needs.
Anyway, glad you had a recent backup, I still remember that feeling in the pit of my stomach when I lost my data

all of my very important stuff (for school) is automatically saved to my next cloud server and synch across 4 computers so that's pretty safe. all photos and stuff is automatically backed up to the server thru plex and then backed up to an external drive every month.
software, media and other files are just stored on the server and protected by the 1 drive parity.
