Yes, if you have the power profile in Windows set to let the drive spin down after inactivity, the drive will do that.

But Windows almost never idle completely, which is why the drive will seem to spin down randomly. I've tried many things. Edited what Windows can search in, the index thing, stopped Windows from defragging while idle, things like this, and the drive still almost never spins down, and just randomly spins up when it has spun down. Also, if the drive has stopped and I open Windows Explorer, my whole PC will freeze until the drive has spun up again.

Windows is a buggy mess when it comes to idling these drives... I've even considered buying a HDD cage, to put all my HDD's in that and turn it off when I don't use them, because yes, these HDD's are loud and it's impossible to have a proper silent system with these installed.

hmm oh well  looks like ill have to put up with it. ive tried all the things youve listed too

  2. In need of some help

I have a WD Red drive "Western Digital Red WD101EFAX 10TB 3.5" NAS Hard Drive"

    its new

problem is - it is constantly spinning at max speed and creating an annoying moderately loud hum (not so loud to the point where the drive is obviosuly defective)

i have tried changing power options to " turn disk of after 1 min" - does nothing

i have formatted the drive and on resource monitor, it is not being used - still loud hum

the drive is otherwise functioning perfectly fine, and i dont believe there to be any bad sectors/errors with it when i ran some HDD checking software  - also no scratching/scraping, abnormal clicking sounds, just a moderately loud annoying constant hum

My main problem is the sound it creates - i am not concerned at all if it is always spinning 24/7, as long as it does it quietly

i have another WD black drive that is silent when idling

i have searched all over for an answer with no success in finding a way to make my WD red drive spin down/silently

  3. I have recently returned from an overseas trip and realized that i have lost the charging dock/case for these wireless earphones

i am unable to use them and wondering whether there is another way of charging it as a new case costs ~$150. 20181005_173611.thumb.jpg.55850f5f7c7e4f7ff9b0c51760999552.jpg

  4. Currently i have an old razer keybaord (black widow) and i find that i dont have enough macro keys.

is it possible to get ahold of another razer keyboard and remap all the keys and use it purely as a macro keyboard (remapping by razer synapse)

if it is possible - there are some used razer keyboards on ebay that i may buy

otherwise, ive seen the LTT video that teaches you to use autohotkey or Lua macros or something to make another macro keyboard (but im a bit hesitant in doing that because i need to learn how to do the hole thing)

01 . Find Which Device can Wake up Your Computer

Open CMD and run the following command :

    powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

It will show you the list of devices that are configured to wake your computer up. If your keyboard or mouse is not listed, you need to enable the “Allow this device to wake the computer” setting in your computer...

    02. Stop Windows from Powering Off USB Devices

Windows is set to shut down your USB devices in sleep mode to save power by default, sometimes it won’t be able to power it back up..

    03. Enable USB Wakeup in Your Computer’s BIOS

    hope that's helping for you ... :)

    thanks for the reply,

unfortunately, ive done those steps already - my keyboard is able to wake the the computer up from sleep as all the fans start spinning when i press any key on the keyboard, but nothing shows up on the screen. ive also stopped windows powering down the USB devices and i cannot find the enable USB wakeup option in the BIOS.

  6. Ive recently installed Windows 7 (64 bit) on my computer and since then, i can sleep the computer but cannot fully wake it back up again,

when i press the sleep option on windows, everything turns off including the fans of the computer but when i press any key on the keyboard, the fans start spinning again, but nothing shows up on my screen

i end up having to force shutdown and restart the computer. (the computer screen is completely empty, nothing shows up on the screen at all)

id appreciate any help if possible. thanks in advance

  7. hello,

i have a folder of 5,500 tables and graphs as jpg files and i want to be able to search for specific tables/graphs by word.

so far using the search function for windows explorer is not working

i found that inserting the images into OneNote did allow me to search the images by text - however is not a practical way of proceeding because there are so many files and it takes very long to load

is there another way i can say e.g. type in some text using a specific method/program and have all the tables and graphs with those words show up?

    thanks in advance

I know my iPhone did this on iOS 10.3.2 and it  turned out it was location services running in the background for each and every app allowed to use location. Could this be somewhat similar on Android?

ill have a look into this. thanks for the input

  9. "OS services" seems to be using excessive amounts of data

i made a post yesterday claiming its data use on my phone data

since then, the wifi has used another 10GB+  for "OS services" - its been using 6-7GB daily for this for the past 3 days

its totalled 20GB since the beginning of this month

i need to find out how to stop this - its draining alot of battery and data

    thanks in advance

  10. i was out for dinner - had phone data turned on and found out afterwards "OS services" used ~800mb of my 1.5GB monthly data (and the month just started)

few days ago "OS services" used over 6GB over wifi

i have "download updates automatically" checked - but it does so over wifi, not phone data

this has never happened before (had my phone - note 4 for few years running android 6.0.1)

what exactly may be causing this & how can i stop this from happening again

    thanks in advance

  11. i use to have a mac and absolutely loved the calendar application.

i have since switched to a windows laptop - and struggling to find something similar

i have been using the apple calendar on icloud (opened up on a webpage - always requires internet), but i would like to know if there are any other options (so that i can use calendar offline)

i do know there is the windows 10 calendar app - but honestly thats no where near as good/functional (1 big reason is that i cant easily set time slots of 15 min intervals - minimal being 30 mins - i do alot of shifting of times and it is a hassle to manually change everything to 15min intervals)

    thanks in advance!

  12. this hover preview is very annoying especially when hovering over videos - it starts playing the videos with audio

am i able to turn this function off?

(picture is an example of what is previewed on hovering over images - if file is a video, it will start playing) - thanks in advance

(ive also tried googling but all advice seems to be for turning off aero peek function on windows - which i dont think this is)

It doesn't really matter. Just use it normally. by the time you need to get new batteries for the laptop, the laptop will be outdated or dead anyways. if you do want to prevent full charge, there's firmware that sets max charge at whatever percentage you want. I don't have any recommendations cause I don't use any of them (because of the first point I made), but if you really want to, it's available.

    thanks for the reply.

i use it for uni almost everyday (drain about 80% of the battery) and when i get home i plug it in till next morning. so it doesnt stay plugged in all the time, just at nights.

  14. whenever i plug in my ear buds, the computer doesnt register it and plays sound through speakers

ive installed the drivers from dell website multiple times

    restarted computer many times

    any solutions?

EDIT: i also have the wavesaudio installed which messes up all the quality of the sound - it adds reverb to everything and lowers the quality

    any fix around this?

    thanks
