    for single thread yes
for multi thread, the 8350 can easily hold up to, or even surpass an i5, which has 4 cores

2 intel cores are better than 8 AMD cores. That said yes go for the 5820k.

not an overclocking fail, but when i practiced overclocking on my 9600GT, i tweaked the mem clock while unigine heaven is running and the entire screen has the "whirlpool" effect where everything froze and starts swirling into the middle slowly

Hello People. I am building a computer. IT will probably take about a year and a half to get all the parts. I have found that the hardest part of the build will be the mother board. I only need 1 psix slot since i don't need sli nor want to spend the money. I want usb 3.0, i7 cpu, eventually a 980 gpu currently will be a 650ti, willing to get a wireless internet card if its not built in ( i run wired now but some places dont allow for this.) and future proofing. What mother board should i get. I also don't over clock since i want a good rig but i'm not an enthusiast its just If i'm going to pay for gaming and all the games come to pc anyway I may as well spend my money there. price point i would like it to be no more than $250 if possible

If you are looking to see if the bord has upgradibility then you can put almost any socket 2011 cpu in it such as the 3930k, or 4960x, if your motherboard supports it an e5 26xx xeon, with possibly ecc memory, the e5-2670 go for about $70USD on ebay, and 64Gb ram max.

No ddr4 wont be compatible, but other then the slightly lower voltage, there is almost no significant advantages of ddr4 over ddr3.

As stated by everyone above, your best bet is to save the money and purchase your parts once you have enough saved for all of them and are closer to the build.  Over the course of 1.5 years, many of the parts that you could buy today or in a couple of months will have dropped in price.  Not to mention that you never know where you'll be in life a year or two down the road.  You will generally always spend more money buying parts over time than you would have waiting and buying at once.  Not always, but generally speaking.

How are you going to test the parts that you buy today?  I'd always test something within it's return period.  You're not going to have much luck trying to return it, but some parts may still have warranty for a possible RMA through the manufacturer.  Not worth the risk in my opinion.

If you still want to get started now stick with platforms that are carrying on into future iterations such as LGA 1151 and LGA 2011 v3 sockets.  This will give you the choice between previous generation and current generation CPUs at the time of your actual build.  With that said, those motherboards will be available at even better prices when you actually get around to building so waiting is still your best choice.

In my opinion, exercising the 2nd Amendment is a good option for these types of meets.  I buy stuff from local sellers all the time and have never met at a Police Station.  I think that's a great option, but definitely not the only option.

You're definitely right about the contacting and communicating before a meet.  You can spare yourself a lot of wasted time by getting to know who you are dealing with.

Nope. They have the same chances of being successful just like any other student in the class.
It all comes down to how much dedication and effort you're putting onto your school/college/university. Nothing to do with nerds and/or geeks or anything.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a processor for my new computer. I originally wanted to buy an Intel Core i3 4170 @ 3.7GHz but I decided to look at i5 quad-core processors. However, most of the quad-core i5's I'm looking at are mostly below 3.5GHz. So I wanted to know which is faster, the dual-core i3 @ 3.7GHz or the quad core i5 @ 3.2 - 3.5GHz.(Basically I want to know if there is a difference between dual-core speeds and quad-core speeds)

    Thanks

It would be good as a server, but please don't toss it in the trash especially if it works, there are electronics recyclers that specialize in handling electronics, and charities that take old computers, refurbish them and then give them to people.

I remember when somone told me your computer gets outdated every 3 years and yet since the majority of software developers are starting to develop their software to be able to run on really low end tablet/ultranthin laptop processors it really is starting to defeat the purpose of having the latest and greatest when it comes to processors because I can still run a 8 year old Dell desktop with a 3.0ghz Core 2 Duo and 6gb of ram as my daily driver with it able to run the majority of the games I play (being World of Tanks, War Thunder, and World of Warcraft) just fine and also still being fast enough for me to browse the web without me noticing the difference in webpage loading and smoothness of scrolling and navigating the webpage compared to my main desktop that has a core i5 4690k and 10gb of ram, yes the core i5 machine is going to be able to max out most of the games I play with a 750ti GPU but I still notice no difference when browsing the web and running stuff like word programs and skype

RustyBaked reacted to TheKDub in can i transfer ethernet from one computer to the next?
Wrong, if you've got two ethernet ports on a computer, you can use one port to connect to a network, the other to another computer and use it like an ethernet passthrough. (Or if you've got a wireless card and an ethernet port, you can connect to a network with the wireless card and then use the ethernet port to pass the connection to another computer.)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-internet-connection-sharing#1TC=windows-7 this has some more information on it.

Also, if at least one of the computers is relatively new you won't need a crossover cable, you can just use a regular ethernet cable (I'd recommend Cat5e or better) as newer ethernet jacks tend to have a feature called "Auto MDI-X", more information on that can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-dependent_interface#Auto_MDI-X

nah ethernet is both ways. I know it can be done I just haven't done it personally.

You might be able to find the ethernet port on the PC with wifi and set to the adapter to a "bridge" if i remember from someone else correctly, and it will pass the connection.
