Let me just say the LTC rig I built over the weekend is in the same room as me, its got 2 290's in it and they're both running at about 90%.
I can literally hear it from anywhere in my entire house.
 
But hey, I doubt you'll ever need to get to 100% on the fan when you're gaming, they are truly awesome cards- noise, heat and all.
 
If its really a big concern, get the Asus DCUII, its coming out soon.... Bitch.

Utter crap ? Your cards may be cooler but that doesn't make me a liar. I'm just giving input about my experiences with my cards.

Avoid mining on a reference cooler if you can. Trust me, I do and its loud, hot and horrible.

I've had the GTX 770 Lightning (2GB version) since pretty much the official launch date for that card and I can assure you that is indeed a total beast. Considering the fact that I have a pretty bad overclocking card I still managed to get 1340MHz on the core and 2000MHz on the memory, which is pretty sweet. At those clock speeds this card is way faster than any other HD 7970 or R9 280X. In benchmarks like 3DMark Vantage my card scores on par with the GTX 780. 
Gaming wise, I played BF4 at Ultra settings with AA and had around 80-90FPS, which is kind of odd since MSI Afterburner showed 2.35GB VRAM being used, but what the hell, it works right? MetroLL at Ultra settings with AA is around 35-40FPS; Skyrim (no mods) at Ultra settings is around 70-85FPS; GTA IV at Ultra settings is around 55-70FPS (it's a pretty badly optimized game); Crysis 3 at Ultra settings is around 35FPS. 
 
Benchmarks:
Unigine Valley Extreme Preset 1080p: scores usually around 2245-2250
3DMark Vantage: scores over P41000
3DMark FireStrike: X4180

When you SLI (or Crossfire) two graphics card, they are running in parallel. The specs don't sum together. Just like (*thanks Recon-UK) the VRAM, the bus interface does not add.
It's just 256-bit...per card.
 
 
OP, depending on what you are using as a reference to compare the GTX 770.
GTX 780 Ti  compared to a GTX 770...no contest, GTX 780 Ti.
 
If you have any plans to run Skyrim with a bunch of texture mods and play quite a bit of BF3 / BF4, consider looking into an AMD card...(although the price right now is insane due to the miners).
If not, a GTX 770 will be fine for the time being.
 
Since technology is evolving and improving so friggin quick, we can't say whether or not GTX 770 will be able to maintain Ultra settings in everything. It may be able to run everything on Ultra this year, but we won't know if it will next year.
 
Also, price means very little. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's the best.

780ti could destroy 1440.  I'd go for it.  My meager 770 would struggle with that

The pop-up is due to the game, nothing to do with you.
You could try putting it on your SSD, but I doubt it will do anything.
It's a poor port I'm afraid to say like pretty much all of them.
 
Did you turn v-sync of in-game, just wondering....as that would overwrite adaptive.

I have the MSI Gaming 770 and it is beyond amazing. Its cool and quiet, amazingly so.
 
I'd reccommend the ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte or EVGA.
If the reds your thing then go for either the Asus or MSI, you won't be sorry. (as far as I know the DCUII cooler is slightly cooler than the Twin Frozr IV on the MSI)

But my dear OP, the only reason things like G-Sync, Mantle, Shadowplay and just about every other graphical enhancement in PC gaming for the last 10 years even exist is solely because of the competition between AMD and Nvidia.
