Squashie reacted to Envit0 in Freesync2 with nvidia-card
In general you loose some freesync2 extensions which effect HDR, but they are very very minor. Like auto switching between HDR and SDR (what you do manually), low latency HDR processing blabla. Most of it im pretty sure is just marketing to buy AMD rather than Nvidia...

980 ti to 1080 isn't worth the upgrade. I'd wait for 1080 ti to come out, or wait for vega to release benchmarks

I think that might actually be a good idea (sanding a bit), it would
also allow you to soften up the edges a bit and give the printed parts
a more uniform black colour.
But nicely done overall.

Printing is finished, turned out OK but i could tweak the printer a bit for even better result.
My setup got flat black all over and the finish on the print is a bit to shiny,
considering sanding/flat-clear spray-paint.

Airflow to the VGAs:
As i stated previously, only the GPUs will be water-cooled, this means that video memory and voltage regulators will need passive cooling / heat sinks. To ensure decent airflow over the VGAs i have designed an air canal that will lead air straight over the cards.
Here you can see how the air will be evenly distributed to the two cards:
This canal will be made from 3-4mm acrylic.

Colour-Coordinating the Kryographics Titan
I really like this block, but it's not black and copper. Can't have that now, can we?
The block comes in a nicely sealed bag:

...and without the plastic wrapping. You can see the steel bracket which is used to hold down
the acrylic cover. It really is a very nice concept because you're almost certain not to crack
the acrylic with this method of bolting it down. Plus, it allows for some subtle modding...
The bracket itself. I just so happened to have exactly as many copper screws left over as I
needed for this mod. I did have to shorten them with the cutting wheel though.

The acrylic itself looks like this below the bracket:

Naturally, I needed to paint these screws as well (that's what I had forgotten to
do yesterday ):

I really like the rough powder coat finish on the Caselabs cases, so I tried to approximate
that with a simple spray can. First I gave it a coat of etch primer, then three coats of black.
I let it dry and sanded it (wet) with 5000 grit. Finally, I gave it one last coat of black, but from
rather far away (~50 cm/20", as opposed to the manufacturer-recommended 20~25 cm),
which results in small droplets instead of one contiguous coat. I'm definitely no paint expert,
but I'm pretty happy with the result, it's certainly a lot closer to CL's powder coat than a
flat coat would have been (plus, I'm painting the Raystorms' alu brackets, which have a texture
that also results in a similar finish to this, so it matches rather nicely that as well).

As always, thanks for stopping by.

Squashie reacted to perplex in Project - Prevent Destruction
Hey Guys,
This isn't a real build log but its similar. The story behind it is, My youngest brother (20 years of age) has disability's, the main one is Autism, in the past 5 years hes began breaking things, so i have to think of ways to stop him breaking it and build it. Things hes done are, broken 7 laptop screens by snapping them, breaking doors off the hinge, broken 3 tv's by snapping the screen or pouring water down the back of them, breaking tv controllers, media players ect
Ive given him one of the old laptops of the screen hes broken, but its to slow and hes broken the keys on the keyboard, they also are covered in chocolate milk and abit sticky... ect. So for his 21st birthday, i thought i would get him more of a computer what will be faster, but ill have to stop him from pouring water over it, and this is what i came up with, ill also post extra picture of what else ive done at the end, hope you enjoy and hope if anyone else has or knows someone like this, maybe this can help them
This is the start, where i just varnished it
The insides
With the Side on
This is where the USB ports are going to go
Should look something like this
The bottom of them
The ON button :P
This is the Dell computer i got for cheap and you can see the wires for my external button and fan
It will go into that corner covering the power points
The computer inside the box after i bolted the box to the side of the table
With the side on ready to get set down
This is what it looks like Inside its box
Finished product
Finished product
Finished product
Installed for his birthday, while he was at school (special place for the day) and its bolted to the wall, so he cant do anything to it
2 weeks later snapped the keyboard so i had to do this, its glued to the wood
Screwed down here
I found out couple of months later that my job wasn't finished with the screen, i put perspex on the top to stop him pouring water down it but i caught him picking the monitor up and putting it on the side to pour water down.. so it had to be fixed and this is what i came up with
This is it, all ready to be installed
This is the back of it, for the cable management :P i put the wood there so he cant push the monitor back
Fully installed, bolted down and the screen cant move
Everything completed!!
So yea hope you liked, here are the extra picture i took of things i made for him
The Tv, stop him touching it with acrylic perspex screen, and water proof with the speakers and its bolted to the wall
His Media player, the last one he kept smacking it on the desk and after about 6 months and 200+ times getting hit on the desk the hard drive finally gave up and died, so i got a new media player and hard drive and put it inside
The controllers, he use to snap them, i didnt use to have the acrylic perspex on the top but he managed to break a controller buy hitting it with his calculator....
This is his computer screen, acrylic perspex screen and over the heat vents at the top so water cant go down, there is a gap on the side so some hot air can excape, you can also see the chocolate milk on the side of the screen where he has tried to pour it in :P
This is again acrylic perspex over the stained glass because it use to push his hand through it and break it...
Well that just about does it, with most of the things ive done
Everything was cut out with a CNC machine my other brother owns and cut out for me
Hope you enjoyed it and hope it helps anyone else who is dealing with these issues :)

You can probably set the number of times it tries to boot before it goes to previous settings in the BIOS. Default is often three tries.

Squashie reacted to alpenwasser in 8 SSD workstation Build
moved from EDIT from previous post:
Since somebody mentioned constructive criticism, here's my two cents.
Not so much on the build itself (because to be honest, I'm not enough
up to date to really judge if this makes sense or not, I know my needs
and my builds, but I can't claim to have a comprehensive market overview
at the moment, and I don't have any hands-on experience with VM's).
For your next log (yes, I'm an optimist ), I recommend avoiding putting
the price in the thread title. I've seen a few threads like that on a couple
of forums now, and even if the conversation doesn't turn as sour as this one
has, it's still excellent opportunity for flaming.
Because no matter if you intend it to be perceived as such or not, many
people will simply see it as bragging, that's just human psychology. Whether
or not they're justified in their thoughts or not doesn't really change
anything about that.
If somebody asks how much my build has cost I'll gladly answer, but putting
it in the title seems to rub some people the wrong way, so I avoid that.
The decision's yours, of course, but that's what I've seen when it comes
to that.
Secondly, as mentioned in my previous post, instead of simply uploading
a parts list, give us some background info on your thoughts, needs etc.
For one thing, it will make it a lot easier to give good feedback (because
hey, maybe there really has been an oversight, it happens to the best),
and it would probably (no guarantees, of course ) reduce the amount
of flaming and keep things more polite if people could understand your
train of thought.
I realize that there are people who only come to build logs for pretty
pictures, but for those who do read what you write, it would elevate
the quality of your log quite a bit I would wager. It doesn't need to
be an entire essay (such as this  ), but even just a few sentences
for the critical spots would make a world of difference.
Anyway, so much for my ramble on human interaction.

Thx m8 These builds are full of details so keeping it simple is important, can easily get crowded in there Shining green light on something green is never a good idea Used to work as sound/light man on concerts, picked up a trick or two there:P

Love the vent, Also I like how subtle the lighting is and the fact that it is not green and just ruins everything else as with many builds...
