  1. So my moms dell laptop isn't working properly. Whenever you press the power button the power indicator lights up (and stays lit up, like it should). The hard drive light turns on for about 10 seconds and turns off. Meanwhile nothing is happening on the screen, it remains completely black. I have tried replacing the hard drive with one that I believe to be working, to see if her hard drive was the issue, but the issue remains. I have no idea what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  2. You will get lower framerate with OpenGL vs DirectX from either vendor.  Similar result with WINE compatibility layer.

How much lower? Would it still be acceptable on Bioshock 2 for example @ 1920x1080? (using WINE)

  3. in my experience, the nvidia drivers for linux are slightly better than the AMD drivers.

With that said, they're both pretty crappy.

Can't say I would advise getting a gaming GPU for a linux build, but SteamOS has actually made some advancements in the driver field, so that might be a good OS to try out.

the integrated graphics should be more than enough for linux, just depends on what else you need.

I would like to do some real gaming on it as well though. Linux game support seems to be growing thankfully and I could also use WINE for some games.

  4. Depends on the distro, which are you planning to use?

    Linux Mint

    AMD:

really bad stock drivers, but good open-source drivers from 3rd parties

    NVIDIA:

good stock drivers, but they are closed source so you cant get any others

how is the price for nvidia cards in your area? a lot more?

Best I can find is $350 for a GTX 770

  5. So I'm in the market for a new GPU for my Linux build and I need some assistance. I have received opportunities to purchase an R9 290 for as low as $280, and an R9 280X for even lower. I would love to seize these opportunities, however I have heard very bad things throughout the web about AMD drivers with Linux, even going as far as to say that they severely diminish the overall performance. My question is, should I get the AMD card for the awesome price? or is it not worth it and I should shoot for an Nvidia card at a similar price? Thanks.

  6. I would also say don't plug in the front panel USB or audio headers to the MB either iv had a cheap case kill a a USB drive because they wired the header wrong. I would not be surprised if a miss wired header cable would cause a short. Id only hook up the power/reset switch and power/HDD LEDs

if all else fails. there is a ghetto mod I came up with because my CPU cooler in my i7 920 MB was causing a shot on my haf-xb.

you take out the MB. get a zip-lock bag and cut the ziplock part off and then cut it down the 2 sides so its double the length but only 1 layer of thinness. then you lay that in your case and poke small holes(just big enough to slide down to the base of the stand offs) in it where the stand offs go. The plastic is think enough to just be a separation between your case and the MB.

This should work as a temporary fix until you get that nice new case.

Will do, but I got it to work. I just hooked everything back up when I came home today and it happened to work. Thanks for your help though

  7. It seems like hes right. I would take it out, make sure it works, and reassemble it in the case.

I did do that, when I took it out it worked. When I put it back in, nothin. Like I said the power cable from the case works because it worked when I plugged it into the motherboard when built outside of the case. How can I stop this shortage so that I can build my PC inside of the case.

  8. Bridge the 2 pins where you plug the case power on button with a screwdriver. If it powers on its your case.

It does not power on. It cant be my PSU either because I jumpstarted it and it worked fine. Plus when I built it outside of the case not only did the screwdriver trick work, but it also worked when I plugged the cable for the power button into it too (when built outside the case). It only seems to not work when it is built IN the case, this other guy thinks something is shorting my motherboard.

  9.  I would try using the screwdriver trick when the MB is in your case to see if it powers up that way. if it does then its something to do with the power switch. if it doesn't then your MB is getting shorted out on

It isn't powering up from the screwdriver trick when in the case. So I'm assuming its shorting out on something (like you said), what do you propose I do about that?

  10. take the MB out of your case and build it up out side of it. leave the CPU/cpu cooler on the MB. take every thing else out (ram and video card). Use the top of your MB box (without that anti-static bag) as the place to build this up on.

you can start your PC out side of the case by touching the tip of a screwdriver between the 2 pins of the front panel connector labeled PW+ & PW- (http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-78lmt-usb3_v.4.1_e.pdf) see page 18.

if it powers up then power it down and add the ram. and keep adding stuff until it wont power up anymore.

if it still wont power up grab your old PSU and test with that one. if it still wont power up then your MB is most likely bad and I would exchange it for a new one or call Gigabyte to RMA it.

Yeah that works. Hell, it even worked when I used the cases power cable attached to it outside of the case. Then I tried rebuilding it in the case, and it wouldnt power up. I dont get it, the cases power button worked when I connected it to the mb when built OUTSIDE the case, whats the difference inside?

  11. Did you try taking your MB out of your case and try testing it that way?

Also did you use the motherboard stand offs that came with your case(making sure only the ones that line up with the holes in your MB are screwed in on the case) ? Not using these can/will cause your MB to short out and not power up as well and using one that does not line up with the holes on your mb can short it out as well(aka a stand off touching the back of the MB where no hole is).

Yes, I am using the motherboard standoffs

  12. usualy by taking two wires and shortcircuit it abit risky if u dont know what you are doing. if i were you i would go over every wire, and connection you made just in case its done the wrong way. i got into this problem once where the gpu cables were done the "wrong" way.

I jumpstarted my PSU with a paperclip and the fan spun up, which leads me to believe that the PSU is not the issue. What do you think I should do now?

  13. are you sure?. it might be someting wrong with the connectors. try to short it. google ur psu mod number and then short it if it doesnt turn on then youknow what the problem is :P

Pretty sure, I looked in the manual where to plug it into. And how do I short my PSU? Sorry if thats a dumb question
