  1. My last place of work had Wyse boxes and binned them all because they were so slow and bad. The eventually replaced them with a VMWare based thin client product with a very expensive hardware backend and they were admittedly excellent - flawless, in fact. I still didn't like them though, but only because I wanted to install my own software. I think thin clients are only good if you're willing to invest a lot of money in infrastructure - if you don't have a powerful set of servers delivering to clients over robust, gigabit or better network connections then you'll run into issues.
  2. I can't comment on the Phanteks but my NH-D15 performs as well as the water cooling loop it replaced (not an AIO loop either) - it's brilliant. Buy one! Ignore the colour; it really doesn't matter.
  3. Hello, clever people! I've just upgraded the RAM on my ageing system from 8GB of DDR Corsair XMS3 1333mhz RAM (4 lots of 2GB) with some Kingston HyperX Savage 16GB - 4 sticks of 4GB, 2400MHz. (This stuff: http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX324C11SR_4.pdf) My system is an overclocked Core i7 860 - from 2.8GHz to 3.6GHz. I've installed the RAM but under the default auto settings, it runs at 690mhz, so roughly the 1333Mhz that the old RAM was running at. If I enable XMP profile 1 (2400) it seems to drop the overclock and reduce the CPU speed to somewhere like 192Mhz?! It bluescreened on startup, obviously. XMP profile 2 (2133) boots fine but it changes the overclock to roughly 3.0GHz. I'll be honest, I don't know a lot about overclocking. I managed the 3.6GHz because I was working from knowing that the system could get there (it came overclocked but I had to reset it following a system failure) Can anyone provide any guidance for how to keep the 3.6GHz overclock and have the RAM run closer to it's designed clock speed? (Oh, and I've boosted the DDR voltage to 1.65v as requested by the data sheet) Basically I'm just a bit out of my depth and any wisdom would be very gratefully received. Thanks!
  4. I'm always amazed people move on from the Beyerdynamic DT770s! I've got a pair of 8ohm 770 Pros and they're just about all I can imagine ever wanting in a headset. Comfortable, sound incredible. That's it!
  5. The motherboard is an MSI P55-GD65 so sadly it firmly predates USB3 and I don't have any headers! I could just stick in a USB hub, but then I sort of don't really have a requirement for any more USB ports either, there's plenty on the case. See the struggle?! It feels like all of the accessory devices are for needs I've already got covered and I'm not going to spend £20 on a USB hub for no good reason
  6. Aye, I think that's the issue - the spare covers were never given to me when I received the system (bizarrely, I got all the rest of the spare parts) I toyed with sticking a fan in there, but it takes up three bays! I'm not sure that I can move the lowest (smaller width) bay out. I might ask in the workshop at work if they've got any disposal systems.
  7. Ye-ess...I mean, thanks and all ;-) I should have said really - I've discarded all the usual gadgets that go in because of the following... a) I've got a fan controller b) I've got a card reader c) I sort of don't really want to spend much money on this. I've already shelled out for a Noctua NH-D15 that I really didn't want to!
  8. So I've got a pair of 5.25" bays that have been recently vacated by a watercooling reservoir that decided it didn't want to play any more (long story) and which I've now replaced with an air cooler. Or I will, when they ship the thing. Anyway. It turns out that it's very hard to buy the plastic bay covers from anywhere? I've got two optical drives fitted and the case has a built-in fan speed controller so I'm not bothered about putting one of those in. Any ideas for filling two empty drive bays? Coolermaster official spares (I have a CM Storm Sniper) will sell me the covers but it'd be about £16 total which is madness for two bits of plastic. Other than that they seem to be for sale for crazy money like £5 each - it's just a piece of plastic! Any tips for where I can get some from for really cheap and/or fashion myself? I'm a bit stuck for ideas.
  9. I'm...I'm confused and frightened. Why did you do that?
  10. To be honest, the pictures of the dogs sound ideal to me! (I've never gotten around to buying a Modmic but I do intend to eventually!)
  11. What a fantastic idea for a giveaway! I'm currently recovering from my watercooling loop literally exploding...you can read some more here, if you fancy: I've just bought a Noctua CPU cooler to replace the now derelict watercooling loop. My rig has served me very well for the last few years, but is getting long in the tooth... Intel Core i7 860, overclocked to 3.2Ghz from 2.8, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Reference AMD (ATI branded) HD 5870 1GB Edit: Do you know what, after reading through the rest of this thread and seeing what other people have got and reading your explanation for why you're doing this and what sort of person you'd like to give it to - I'm not sure it's me. I won this computer in a competition 5-6 years ago (I forget exactly when) and at the time it was a dream rig, way more powerful than I could ever afford and probably worth more money than I'll ever spend on a PC in one hit. I also know what it's like to 'win' technology beyond your financial reach, so I know that whoever wins this will be blown away. I'd love to upgrade with the card you're offering, but the reality is that I work full time and could save up and buy one myself eventually one day, even if real life would make that a long road. I don't think I'm the person you're looking for, as much as I'd like to be! I admire what you're doing here, GreezyJeezy - you're a good man! I commend you for your generosity. Besides, the 5870 isn't so bad
  12. I thought I'd already done it, but I've reset the formatting again. Thanks for contributing ;-)
  13. For what it's worth, I've found about three years between fluid changes for normal use is more than OK. First time was with an unknown XSPC blue fluid, that started to separate out and get a bit gungy. I cleaned everything through and rinsed with dilute vinegar, before flushing and refilling with distilled water and a couple of silver coils. From then on, no problems - and "old gunge" that I couldn't get to in the reservoir actually receded and disappeared as well. Distilled water and a silver coils are the way to go, for sure. (Unless you've got nickel in your loop)
  14. Yes - it's this product: (http://martinsliquidlab.petrastech.com/XSPC-DualBay-ReservoirPump-Review.html)
