Train27 got a reaction from Old Account in Biggest file ever?
    Hi there

Just wanted to share a funny anecdote that happened to me a few weeks ago.
So I was preparing for an exam at the University, and the day finally came. The exam was about disk management and its inner functioning + file systems (blocks, nodes, header movements and optimization algorithms).
The thing is, I completely forgot to bring my calculator, so I had in front of me the hard task of facing lots of 'Gibis' and 'Mebis' calculations with bit precision, with only a couple of hours of sleep at my back.

I realized this was a lost cause when, after two hours of exam, I found myself working with a massive 3,3 trillion GiB file, and spent the rest of the time navigating through various pages of disorganized eight and nine digit counts trying to found the error.

Train27 got a reaction from Captain Matt in Class about breaking PCs
I wasn't really sure where to post this topic, hope I chose the correct subforum.

Anyway, the thing is a few days ago I had a crazy fun class at my University. It was a regular day in my Computer Architecture class until the teacher arrived to the room with a big perverse smile, and proceeded to explain what we'd do that day. It was about breaking computers.

The group before us had mess with some old pc's and we had to repair them, find the possible errors, troubleshoot them and make them work. And then, it was our turn to break them for the next group.
Of course, by "break" I don't mean irreversibly break them, just touch a few things here and there.

I found the concept interesting so I decided it'd be good to share, and so I could tell what I made to the pc and also ask you: what would you have done to it?
    I did the following:
Moved the graphics card from the PCI Express x16 to the PCI Express x4 slot Moved one stick of RAM to another channel (nulifying double channel), and set the other one almost well introduced into the slot. Connected the IDE cable from one port of the motherboard to another. Connected the HDD to the disk drive via a sata cable. Completely messed with the jumpers. Disconnected the chipset's fan. Disconnected the front pannel's buttons (on/off, reset...).
P.S.: I attach a photo of the motherboard.

I disagree, there ARE differences, however, it is quite unlikely that they'll make any big difference while gaming, unless you're trying a very ram-demanding game (e.g. any relatively new total war with 8000+ soldiers).

Train27 got a reaction from ShaunOfNintendo in What makes one router better than another?
As far as I know, buying a new one (I mean, a good, new one) will bring you some advantages:
Internet traffic encryption: most decent +40$ routers come with some sort of encryption to protect all your traffic. It's remarkable to say that they do not encrypt your traffic through the open internet, only from your PC to your internet provider. (to have a continuously encrypted traffic you'll have to be using https all the time). Reduction in the ping/latency: tho the decrease in ms will most likely be negligible, some people really appreciates this (usually competitive gamers and server admins). Number of devices connected: keep in mind that this won't make them go faster, since it doesn't increase your bandwith, but old/bad routers have a small limit on the amount of devices they can have connected at once. Security features: besides encryption, there are other ways of protecting your internet connection. A good router will provide strong defenses against usual attacks (such as the so feared DDOS attack). Larger connection area: assuming it comes along with some sort of wi-fi adapter (almost all of them do), chances are it will be better than your old one's, thus improving the range and quality of your wi-fi signal. If you need a really good signal and you want to improve it even further the standard, you should look towards routers that come with slots for extra antennas. They look cool: let's assume it, it might not be worth the price just for this, but modern routers tend to look cooler than the older ones.

I meant that linux systems have neither:
A lot of preinstalled software (Mac). A lot of available software online (Windows). Don't get mad saying that there is "plenty of vary software available" on Ubuntu Software Center / Linux Mint Software / blablabla
I myself am a Linux user, and there is an awful loft of software (and even whole software sections) lacking for linux.
I'm not saying you can't use Linux for the average same tasks you'd do on Mac or Windows, but there are specific areas of software (game engines, for example) with little to no existing programs.

I agree with elfFriend, coding programs with UI tends to be very rewarding in terms of experience (OpenCL for C++ and the buil-in graphic packages for Java).

Windows (and the WMD platform in general) tends to be easier to approach when programming in C#, due to the efficiency and compatibily enhancements that it brings to all Microsoft systems.

We're both studying Computer Science at a local university. He doesn't even speak english so he asked me to post for him.

Train27 reacted to Enderman in do you pay for an antivirus and firewal program ?
You have some serious problems, maybe try to take a break from the internet and calm down?

an antivirus does not look at the process names
viruses disguise themselves by changing the name to something thats trusted such as "svchost" or something else thats normal (such as the program they infected), thats why you cant tell anything by looking at processes

antiviruses check the files of the programs that are running for malicious code
unless you have the time to manually look through 300 000 system files and know that there is a virus when you see one, that is not possible for you to do

    again, antiviruses are for prevention
doesnt mean you have a virus right now, but when you get one you will definitely not know you have one

any one of your programs that are set to automatically update could download an infected update some day
such as what happened with puush, and this can happen to any program
luckily a lot of people who had puush also had an antivirus which detected and blocked the infection, then those people talked about it on the internet and dicovered everyone had gotten an automatic update which was a virus

so having an antivirus is important because you never know how or when you will get a virus
and an antivirus is the only thing that will let you know its there
being "smart" and not downloading from suspicious sites is not enough

any program could get infected and download an update to your PC
any trusted website can get hacked and you think youre downloading something safe but its actually a virus (eg. the infected linux download a few months ago)

so if you would rather risk having a virus and not know about it then go ahead, i dont care if you do
what i care about is not having 50 people a week some to this forum asking for help because their drive in encrypted because they though they didnt need an antivirus
so stop spreading BS, go do your own thing and dont tell people "you dont need an antivirus, if you think you do you're ignorant"

In any event all of this is all well and good but arguably the single most valuable area that you should be focusing on right now is the theory. You should put your maximum effort into learning good engineering and design principles. They are language agnostic and will help you infer knowledge about specific languages and programming paradigms moving forwards.

Any chimp may bang away at a keyboard and name the product 'code'... It takes a Software Engineer/Developer (someone who has an understanding of the underlying theory) to produce eloquent, well designed and extensible software.

I can elaborate if you are interested.

your friends are not wrong - this statement is completely correct
however now you can point fingers and laugh at them because of their ignorant attitude and lack of better knowledge:
the thing that differentiates antiviruses and security solutions is how well they cope with zero-day vulnerabilities, real time protection and currently unknown and there for non-existent in the "public-global-malware-database" threats

you are not dumb for making this decision, your friends are ignorant
