daDILLYdog reacted to LinusTech in @LinusTech Twitter Account Hacked
On June 28, 2016 the Linus Media Group domain registrar account was compromised.
The exact methodology of the "hack" won't be disclosed for obvious reasons, but I can assure you that despite any claims to the contrary, the appropriate safeguards were in place on our side, and as I type this Yvonne is having a very heated phone discussion with the 3rd party responsible for the breach.
Anyway, the thing most of you are probably wondering about right now is what this means for your forum account or personal information, and the answer is very simple:
NOTHING.
The "hacker" simply changed the DNS settings in the dashboard and did not at any time have access to the linustechtips.com server. Any claims of a database dump are categorically false.
The compromised accounts - including Twitter - have been restored.
I hope this clears things up.
Linus

Go to This PC > Properties
Scroll to the bottom and it'll tell you if windows is activated. If it is then this is probably a virus of some sort. Avast Free anti-virus and Malwarebytes anti-malware could help get rid of it if this is the case.

quick explanation to the things i changed:
- get one of the new toastwell x99 chips, it'll be a MASSIVE improvement over the 6700k
- tower cooler because silence
- get *a* motherboard, i dont care which one, thats a placeholder if anything
- kept the ram
- for storage i went for the lowest price/GB hard drive that seemed trustworthy and wouldnt be a jackhammer
- FD define R5 because its silent, professional, and has LOTS of options. (seriously, you dont know all of its options, i've had mine for over a year and i'm still finding options)
- kept the psu
- do yourself a favor and dont buy an optical drive because its black, if it annoys you its grey a can of paint is like $5...
- kept your pick of software
- put those two fans in the front of your case, they're windtunnels
- 2x 4K screens, that'll do you better than a high refresh rate display when creating content, because your content will HAVE to be locked at 60 to have a decent result either way. (example: lirik used to stream with G-sync, it was tearfest for viewers)
- i snipped out your audio devices except for the mic, get yourself a decent (external) DAC and professional headphones, i'm not the right person to help you here, but i'm the right person to tell you that especially for pro stuff you WANT that audio to be outside of your pc, because a pc is just all kinds of interference

google "problems after cloning windows" and you will see all the crap that happens when you clone
even WD recommends against it

You can easily get the OS iso file from the MS's website and follow the tutorial there on how to create a bootable Flash Drive with the appropriate tools again provided there. Then all you need to get is your OS key which you can either get from your laptop's case (if it's printed somewhere) or check it from the OS itself. Assuming you can boot your computer without any problems, you can easily create a simple VBscript that will read the value out of the registry and then translate it into the format that you need for reinstalling.
Copy and paste the following into a Notepad window:
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))
Function ConvertToKey(Key)
Const KeyOffset = 52
i = 28
Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"
Do
Cur = 0
x = 14
Do
Cur = Cur * 256
Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255
Cur = Cur Mod 24
x = x -1
Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1
KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then
i = i -1
KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput
End If
Loop While i >= 0
ConvertToKey = KeyOutput
End Function
You’ll need to use File -> Save As, change the “Save as type” to “All Files” and then name it productkey.vbs or something similar ending with the vbs extension. Once you’ve saved it, you can just double-click and the popup window will show you your product key. Protip: If you use CTRL + C when the popup window is active, it will copy the contents of the window to the clipboard, and then you can paste it into Notepad or somewhere else.
Post back if you have any further questions
Captain_WD.

I was going to do this to my 2012 MacBook that I use as a, paperweight (cloning a HDD to SSD) but now I know it's better to do the hassle filled fresh install.
