  1. Everything is stable at 4.0 GHz. Stopped there. Blender is generally more responsive now. I am very happy.
  2. Ok, it took me a while to gather up the courage. But I overclocked it from 3.3 to 3.6 without any issues or needing to increase any voltage. Doing an extreme render in Blender at the moment, and the core temperatures are keeping below 60. System is stable. Animating is noticably smoother just with this small overclock. Considering to try and reach 4.0 ghz. Don't feel any need to try and go above that though. In the Linux Tech tips about where they used this same processor to overclock they went straight to 4.6, I don't want to stretch that far though, I don't have a top of the line water cooler, just a top of the line tower cooler. Also, I guess I want some longevity. My benchmark render has been going for 12 minutes. Gonna let it run a bit more and see if I run into stability issues. But the core temperature seems to have levelled out at about 55 degrees Celsius or lower.
  3. Does he need to invest in an i7 for the things he has listed he wants to do with it?
  4. I edited the topic and post to make make it aimed at anyone interested, not just the show crew.
  5. Hi. Graphics has come a long way. But there are game dev issues with graphics getting more and more complex that are rarely touched upon. At least if you agree with the Reviews of Angry Joe, the latest gen titles that really has focused on graphics has been kinda of lukewarm. As a 3d-animation and modelling hobbyist I predicted this would happen many years ago. Every time the graphics hardware gets better the workload of the modellers, riggers and animators working on triple a titles get bigger, and with it the part of the budget that needs to go to that department. There were inevitably going to come a time when we passed the threshold and the gameplay and amount of content in triple a titles would start to suffer because of this. It seems to me we just went over that threshold. It's probably going to get better again, when they have created algorithms for auto-weighting and rigging 3d-scanned models and procedural generation gets smarter and more intuitive with architecture and objects, but I think that's going to be a while. Until then, I guess we might see a lot of reuse of assets between games. But still, as a person who loves non human creature design, motion capture just isn't viable for a creatures that doesn't exist. I would love to see what the Linus team could dig up on this and have Linus present it in a show so I can see if the facts agree with me.
  6. I love being on Linux. Sure, it's always a bit of a hassle now and then, but it's less stressful than my paranoid feeling that my OS calling home to Microsoft every half hour. I like being in control, and being able to customize everything just the way I want it. Also, the new interface features in Windows releases have often been in Linux for a long while. Like windows 10 having multiple desktop workspaces, Linux has had that for many, many years. Since way before I started using Linux which was more than ten years ago. Also, the "lack of games" is a boon for me, it helps me get things done. Of course, this isn't completely true, I still have enough games to keep me distracted... But I have a feeling it would be a lot worse on Windows. There are a lot of indie titles that have official Linux builds, but admittedly very few if you desperately crave that triple a Graphics experience. (Though I just started playing Shadow Warriors, and it most definitely has triple a graphics.) I personally don't see the allure of photo-realism in games, but I am a fan of animation and anime and, maybe because of this special interest, the tricks used to overcome the limitations of a medium and how artistically they manage to do it is way more alluring to me. 7. Thank you all! I opened the old computer to take out the drive, but I will be waiting until its drier outside. I am not putting my hand in that thing until I have dragged it outside and removed the dust with a can of air...
  8. Will there be an issue with plugging my nine years old optical drive into my new x99 motherboard? I thought when I got this computer an optical drive would be a waste of space, but I had forgotten that I like to transfer my old music cds to the computer now and then to be able to listen to them while doing computer stuff. So I want to move the drive from the old computer to the new one.
  9. Keep in mind that the paint will act as an insulator, probably making the board warmer under operation.
  10. I had the same problem in Linux, screen tearing in all applications, including movies. If you are on Linux: https://askubuntu.com/questions/456355/have-tearing-no-vsync-in-movies-nvidia-proprietary-driver Answer nr 4 worked for me.
  11. That's a low expectation in a day and age when electronic waste is a problem. I would probably still be using my HTC magic if Android didn't stop supporting it. It was locked to Android 1.5, and the security updates had stopped coming a long time ago when I got my new Fairphone. I must have had it at least 7 or 8 years, and with the non waste philosophy I expect Fairphone to still support it that far in the future. http://www.fairphone.com
  12. Aah. I guess it's a matter of preference, I have a sound proofed Fractal Design R5 case, without the window. I value silence above aesthetics in any scenario, but it's because I am slightly autistic: got big problems with sounds overwhelming my nervous system and draining all my energy.
  13. Noctua fans are the most silent on the market though, aren't they?
  14. I think at some point you will just obstruct airflow. A radiator would become completely ineffective very fast if the air isn't moving fast enough. Also, it will not actually lead any heat away from your components unless they have solid contact with them. Other than that, the measurements of the inner side of the case are on the manufacturers website, if you are just talking about how big cooler radiators you can get. Just remember to consider the layout of the motherboard. Having the biggest CPU radiator you can find probably won't fit if your ram comes with huge radiators of their own. If it's a silent system you are after, go for Noctua fans. I have a sound proofed Fractal Design R5 case with a Noctua NH-D15S CPU cooler and corsair 850 PSU. It's not completely silent, but very silent indeed, and I am very sensitive to sound, so I think you can take my word for it. A little less silent if I tax the graphics card, but it's a high end graphics card and I don't think there are any third party silent solutions available for it that would be safe.
  15. Blender has official add-ons for making it easier to prepare a model for 3d-printing. You just have to activate them in the user preferences. As a long time Blender user I would urge you to try again, there are a ton of tutorials on youtube both for absolute beginners and more specific tasks. If the node system seems daunting, don't worry, it's only used for rendering and things affecting rendering, so you will never need to touch it when making models for 3d-printing.
