Do I Need to Upgrade My CPU for a 3080/3090?
Dennis Miller posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
I'm currently running an X99 with an i7-5960X at 4.6GHz and two GTX 980tis. I game very comfortably at 1440p but I'm looking to make the jump to 4K HDR. Planning on picking up a 3080 or 3090 (still trying to rationalize the price) and questioning if I need to upgrade my CPU just yet. A higher clock speed would be nice but 4.6GHz is respectable and 8 cores with HT is certainly enough. Everything I've read seems to indicate that the bottleneck at 4k is the GPU, not the chip. So what are your thoughts/opinions on NOT upgrading the chip (I'd really like to see a couple months of next-gen Ryzen before I have to make an upgrade there)? TIA -
Homelab start up questions/help on ESXi
Dennis Miller replied to Craigk_c19's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Are you trying to create all 4+ machines as separate VMs running simultaneously on the same physical system? If so, then I believe you're really going to be constrained by that CPU. It only has four cores and single core VMs really crawl. If it's for purely learning purposes, I would suggest only keeping the domain controller running and spin up the others one at a time to play with. -
Both JayzTwoCents and Buildzoid had good things to say about that card, and I like that both of you bring up how quiet it is...a valid concern since my machine sits on top of my desk, where it belongs. Probably going with that card at this point. I guess I was hoping that someone would come along and tell me I wouldn't notice a difference with a reference card in a properly cooled case lol.

I get that argument, truly, you're not wrong. Gaming is actually my secondary use case, productivity being the first. For me, that includes databases and virtualization, so more cores are better than higher clock speeds. Plus, in the day and age of pci-e storage, I'd like to have more than 16 lanes. I get that the X is literally twice as much, and that does appear to shoot a hole in my value/performance argument. But, I've always believed that if you're going to overspend, do so on your CPU and motherboard. In 15 years of building PCs, I've never been disappointed in that mantra. I gave my i7-990x/Asus Rampage III Extreme to my teenagers a few years back and it still runs like a champ. So, I guess my viewpoint on spending regarding a GPU is quite different from a CPU...and I probably should have made that clear in my OP.

Thank you all for the replies Yes, but value is still a concern so... no...I won't be going to LN2 or anything crazy (I may not even water cool it) so I don't think, even if I was an Associate, that I would buy that card. The Hall of Fame and Lightning Z cards are never in stock and . Those three cards seem a little too far down the scale of diminishing returns for me. I think I'm leaning towards the EVGA FTW3 or MSI Gaming X Trio for the higher power limits. I've had good experience, personally at least, with EVGA (motherboards, power supplies, and more than a few gpus), but never had anything from MSI...but it looks like MSI has a higher power limit?

Planning my next build (see below) and trying to decide which gpu to purchase... Looking at a single 2080 Ti solution and my question is this...is it worth it to get an upgraded custom pcb (i.e. EVGA FTW3) or stick with the reference (i.e. EVGA XC)? I plan to overclock it and will have 3 unobstructed 120mm intake fans pointed right at the card. If I can get an extra 100 MHz or so out of an upgraded card then I would consider that worth it. Thanks, I put a lot of work into in, including a full custom loop. The only "mistake" I made was using a monoblock for the motherboard that cools the CPU and the VRMs. I call it a mistake because I've gotten the chip up to 4.5 GHz stable but temps started hitting the mid 80s and I just wasn't comfortable with that. I think it's just a little too much heat for the loop to handle with the VRMs in the picture.

Thank you everyone for the replies... Probably won't go the AMD route since I'm already invested in G-Sync... And I totally get the advice to wait...which I'd have to do anyway if rtx cards are still going to run $1.5k, going to have to stash away a little each month anyway as it's pretty hard to hide four-digit purchases from the wife! Thanks again!

I've had a pair of 980 Ti's for almost three years now. I'm looking for advice as to whether there are any upgrades that both make sense and are worth the money. GPU prices are still crazy in my opinion and I don't want to throw down a couple grand unless it's really worth it. I'm still happy with these cards but I like gaming at (mostly) ultra settings and I'm starting to wonder how long I can get by with future games. In particular, I'm looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 late this year or early next year. I haven't been this excited for an upcoming title in a long time and I want to make sure I can run it well. I know the demo they released last summer was running a 1080 Ti and I think my system is comparable but...I'm just not sure. Anyway, I would love to get the forum's opinion. Here's a portion of my system specs: GPU: 2 Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti (@ 1391 MHZ) in SLI CPU: Intel i7-5960X @ 4 GHz MB: Asus X99-Pro RAM: 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2400 MHz Monitor: Acer Predator X34 (3440 X 1440 G-Sync IPS @ 100Hz)

I guess I'd have to go with Classical as far as what I listen to most often, but my tastes are varied and include EDM, Rock, Metal, Soul/R&B, pretty much anything except the real Pop'y stuff. Actually I'm pretty happy with the 598s but was considering moving them to my travel kit (tired of putting up with my cheap earbuds) and getting a replacement for my daily driver. The flip-side of this question is whether I should be looking at something specific for travel, but the 598s are reasonably light-weight and decently sturdy

I currently have a pair of Sennheiser HD598s but considering getting a pair of AKG K7XXs from Massdrop (200 USD). Is it worth the upgrade?

This... Although their Pastel line (actually made by Mayhems) is glycerol-based, which I believe is safe for use with PETG.
