Is there an IGpu in your system? If there is, disable it in the bios.

This is a recent addition I spoted boxed in a charit or thrift shop for those in the US priced £60 which is about $75 And I couldn't resist the urge to pick it up.

In really good condition even though I only gave it a wipe down and will need to get rid of the dust under the keyboard

Just need to order a few extra bits to get it working on one of my displays, be able to use a mouse and be able to use an SD card.
On power up though it seems just fine, I joined a Discord to get advice on things to get so I can use it and they say my boot up floopy noise is natural as it looks for a disk before booting into the OS if there isn't one inserted.

Did a lot of imaging last night. IT department lent me this lovely Presario 1655, basically brand new. Info was filled out on the user guide.

Also had this handwritten note of how to turn it off, which I found funny

Not pictured, on the inside cover of the manual there were a few MS-DOS commands written down as well as the machine's specs (4gb HDD, 64mb 66mhz SDR, 266mhz Pentium 2)
Has some generic graphics accelerator by a company I'd never heard of, can't do 3d unfortunately. But it's got a 1024x768 panel with these incredibly thin bezels for its age, looks pretty good. Soundcard is an ESS Solo """Sound Blaster Compatible""" (aka vaguely sounds like a sound blaster if you removed half the capacitors). Speakers don't sound half bad. Has this media panel at the top so you can play CDs with the laptop turned off (has its own power switch). 2 PCMCIA slots too - I don't see that too often.

Got about 2/3 the score my K6-380 did in HWiNFO32 benchmarks.
Included also was the original software. Don't want to pull the disks back out so I'll just give you this

A couple of these have made their way onto archive.org if anyone needs restore disks. @BrianTheElectrician? A lot of drivers are similar or same to the later 1600 models.
I wish I could keep this but the head of the IT department is keeping it for using legacy software and backing up floppies. Compared to my Presario 1685, I prefer the design and construction of this one (the 1685 will snap in half if you pick it up by the front half while open as the keyboard and palmrest are separate parts. It's totally repairable but rather bothersome.)

A retro IBM Thinkpad 760ED I got alongside some Toshiba/eMachine era laptop from family last year, and since I'm the techy I get given stuff randomly.
Now upto 7 laptops though 5 of those were given to me, 1 is my current laptop and 1 my last daily driver laptop .

The IBM Came in a laptop bag with some sealed/unsealed goodies like documentation, win 95...etc although didn't have the power brick so been unable to power it up.
Seen them online but just haven't bothered buying one.

If I had to guess, I'd say the competition got bigger and they started to evolve their videos beyond what Rodney was doing, so for whatever reason he couldn't or just didn't want to keep up with what they were doing. .

Real life may have played a part, as could just being burnt out on tech/computer stuff.

Was never a huge fan of his, but the odd video was worth watching to get an idea of a product.

Picked up an Asus VP247 monitor today.
Nothing special in terms of a monitor but it's cheap, does 1080p, and it's a reasonable replacement for the Dell 2009WT I was using as a 2nd screen.

It’s kind of the same as with Windows.  When a new OS comes out it becomes kind of random if a recently written app or even an update for an old app will work, especially at first.  There is some security patch updating for no longer current OSes but it doesn’t last any longer than Microsoft’s stuff does, frequently less long, and they update more frequently.  It starts with some stuff not working well and ends with an unpatched system that can’t be allowed near the internet.  Like win7 just became.  Think of it by year.  A 1014 era PC can run win10, but it probably came with 7 when new.  The difference is while that 2014 machine works with win10 now Apple is going to come out with their equivelant to win11, and when that happens they decide if they want a given machine to work with the new OS or not.  Catalina came out oct 2019, so the thing is guaranteed to work fin for the next year and a bit.  After that they decide again.  Maybe it will be in, maybe it will be out.  If it’s out you still get security patches for Catalina which should go for a few more years.  Not sure how many.  Sometimes even if it’s not officially supported you can hack your way into a new OS though.  I got a 2011 era MacBook that I could theoretically hack to run Catalina.

Since “playing around with macOS is the goal, I guess the best answer is even the lowest end Mac mini is hardware capable of doing what you need.  That isn’t the issue.  The issue is getting one that Apple will support updates for for the maximum time. So lowest end newest system possible.  i7s aren’t needed. An i3 would likely be fine, if they even do em.  What matters most in this case I think is date of manufacture.

Catalina is the current iirc.  I don’t know how much longer it is supported either.

PCturbobutton got a reaction from n4vn33t in [LInux] Access windows share in Elementary OS
I just installed Elementary OS onto my Dell laptop with  most of the basics setup and working bar one thing, windows shares from my main desktop running windows 10.

I open up files, hit Entire Network then Windows Network and finally workgroup where I can see my windows desktop called Desktop-xxxxxxxxx (X=A bunch of random letters it was assigned on installed).
If I click on my desktop I get a popup asking what app to use, so naturally I click Files and have set as default checked but all it then does is open a new tab with workgroup folder and clicking on the desktop again brings up the default app selection popup.

Anyone know whats wrong here? I'm a NOOB with linux so don't know what I'm doing hence going with Elementary OS.

Decided to grab a used Fossil Q Venture Gen 3 smartwatch in excellent condition.

Stainless Steel strap version running Android Wear 2.0 so should be good for my use even if it lacks GPS, heart rate sensor or NFC.

I've held off buying a regular switch for so long now for various reasons, but saw a deal for the Switch Lite and Zelda Links Awakening for £200 so decided to buy, since the console is £200 alone.
Wasn't particularly sold on the game TBH but more the fact I got a console that came with a game for the same price as the base system, but it's actually a fun game to play anyway.

Also, I would have liked the TV output that the regular Switch has, but for the price difference and the fact I'd play more as a portable made this an easy purchase.

Picked up an RGB mousepad because it was A) super cheap, and B) will go nicely with my Logitech G203 Prodigy mouse.

Also picked up a pair of Audio Technica ATH-S200BT Wireless On-Ear Headphones.
Only paid £29 when I see amazon sell them between £49-59 depending on what colour you go for, plus they are reviewed rather well for a budget set of Bluetooth headphones with a claimed 40hr battery life.
