  1. Had been using a Dell Latitude E7240 since around late 2019 or so till just this week. Picked it up as a refurb really cheap as it was a 1080p touch screen model with a 4th Gen i5 and went with 4GB of ram as I already had a spare 4GB stick I could use alongside. Despite it being a slightly older machine, for £170 it felt speedy for basic writing, web browsing and media consumption tasks I did with it. Nothing demanding mind you but having used a newer cheap laptop I could feel the different in speed even if both weren't "FAST" especially with the SSD and i5 CPU plus much nicer screen. Eventually the screen would ghost, the rubber around the screen was peeling off and it started to feel a little slow even if still useable so I have just upgraded. Now rocking a good condition used HP Pavilion 15 gaming or whatever it's called. Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD and a 4GB GTX 1650 is more than enough for my use. i can even do some gaming if I want, nothing major but some Sims will work well and older titles should run just fine. Might upgrade to 16GB of ram but for now 8GB will do and maybe I can swap out the SSD or just add a HDD if I just want more space.
  2. I recently noticed in task manager that windows 11 has hardware reserved: 8.1GB of my 16GB of RAM, leaving me with just 7.9GB free for use. I've tried changing virtual memory, setting windows to use all my memory on boot via MSconfig and setting bios to default but still shows as 8.1GB is hardware reserved. How the heck do I get my 8GB back? It shows 16.0GB here but only 7.9 is what I can actually use which I get really close to when I have all the tabs open in Chrome..
  3. A retro IBM Thinkpad 760ED I got alongside some Toshiba/eMachine era laptop from family last year, and since I'm the techy I get given stuff randomly. Now upto 7 laptops though 5 of those were given to me, 1 is my current laptop and 1 my last daily driver laptop . The IBM Came in a laptop bag with some sealed/unsealed goodies like documentation, win 95...etc although didn't have the power brick so been unable to power it up. Seen them online but just haven't bothered buying one.
  4. The box was a bit dirty but was really suprised at the condition of the ST being as good as it is. I only gave the case/keyboard a quick damp cloth wipe, though a clean is needed under the keys and maybe inside (yet to open it up) I might eventually hunt one of those CRTs down or just grab a CRT in general that would wirk best for retro devices like this, for now I'll be grabbing a scart cable to get a basic output. Had an Amiga A500 as a kid or rather my dad did making this my first ever Atari computer, so looking forward to playing about with it.
  5. This is a recent addition I spoted boxed in a charit or thrift shop for those in the US priced £60 which is about $75 And I couldn't resist the urge to pick it up. In really good condition even though I only gave it a wipe down and will need to get rid of the dust under the keyboard Just need to order a few extra bits to get it working on one of my displays, be able to use a mouse and be able to use an SD card. On power up though it seems just fine, I joined a Discord to get advice on things to get so I can use it and they say my boot up floopy noise is natural as it looks for a disk before booting into the OS if there isn't one inserted.
  6. Thanks, ran chkdsk /f and did it's scan during boot with it saying fixing (C:) so not sure if that'll help but worth a try. The issue is not just Steam now as GTA 5 Is from Epic games store and uses the Rockstar launcher. Could it be GPU related? My GPU was used when I got it, and initially showed up with 0MHz on the core and memory clocks in things like GPUZ, but since then I've been using it for almost a year at this point. I always thought it may have been a mining card at some point with a dodgy bios hence the initial issues with clock speeds. Could also be memory but then I've run a memtest with zero errors, swapped ram slots (from 2,4 to 1,3 as well as swapping ram from slot 2 to slot 4 and the other from 4 to 2 ) I've yet to go back to 1 stick of ram and see what happens but I might do that eventually.
  7. So I just went ahead and re-installed windows yesterday. Doing basic web browsing and media playback is 100% fine, no issues or crashes occur. Today I I decided to launch GTA 5, the first game I've played since re-installing windows and after a short time playing it crashes. The game screen was still showing and would stay on top of everything thing else, but if I Alt-Tab I could see a stopped working dialog box and the rockstar games launcher showing some error message because the game had crashed. Looking in Event viewer, I get the same as before, Application error, Event ID: 1000 and the following The only change I made recently was adding a 2nd 8GB stick of ram, the exact same ram as the one I had. I'll try a mem test later just to double check it's not ram related.
  8. Had another crash this time with GTA V. This was the only error I got from event viewer when it crashed but also got an ESENT error 20 minutes before
  9. @BlackManINC Thanks for the help, much appreciated. 1. Getting some issues but nothing that I can see that would affect my main crashing problems. Mainly Hyper-V related. 2. Don't have system restore enabled, I either fix my issues myself or if required I end up re-installing windows. 3. This is a last resort, but can do it if needed. My current install is almost a year old at this point and might be the one I went with right after building this PC. I've ran a few virus scans in OS and boot with nothing coming up in any of them.
  10. These where the errors/warnings I got from the most recent crash that I can remember the exact timing of as I got an 11 minutes of streaming to Facebook before my game crashed. The app errors on here were, Steam and Steam GameOverlayUI plus Chrome, and the tmhidusb error I believe related to my Thrustmaster TMX wheel Basically I've been running all day since and no crashes plus I've run a windows memory test and all came back just fine.
  11. I've been having issues with my PC the last few days whereby games will crash to the desktop, without warning and without any indication prior and post crash as to what is the cause i.e. no errors...etc. It started with F1 2019 when I attempted to stream it via OBS to Facebook, but then the game worked fully when I attempted to play it afterwards without streaming, but it has since started to crash on it's own and also while using Xsplit Gamecaster so I knew it can't be OBS software. I then streamed DiRT Rally OK, and last night Euro Truck 2 steamed for almost 2 hours without issues using Xsplit, but the latter has since crashed to the desktop today, and caused PC slowdown that was like low DPI on my mouse, with the game chugging along when it normally runs smooth. The only change I've made to my PC is finally upgrading to dual channel 16GB ram (2x8gb corsair vengeance LPX) with both matching sticks, I know they're only 2400MHz and Ryzen likes faster ram, but that shouldn't cause my issues. I've DDU'd my graphics drivers so I could reinstall the latest ones from AMD and I'm currently uninstalling any app I don't need and any that I think might cause issues, oh and I've no viruses as AVG/Malwarebytes reports 0. Also re-seated my ram just in case it was causing issues. The only thing I've yet to do is install windows fresh, as it's been 11 months since i last did an install, and there might be something up but that's a last resort. *Edit* Just to add, normal web browsing, and everyday tasks like local media consumption work just fine, at least for now they do, it's just games I've noticed issues with.
  12. Anathema - Untouchable (Part 1) This band was the last gig I went to see, before social distancing and the lockdown happened. Love this song a lot.
  13. Ok, thanks for the help. I'll just need to move on to another OS to test. I was only interested in seeing what various linux OS' including LinHES were like on this spare laptop, and maybe running it as basic HTPC in the living room with whatever one I liked best.
