In fact the best advice is probably just do whatever the hell you've been doing, as it seems to have worked the past 7 times hahahaha!

I will just tease for now :) Got some big stuff planned over the coming week!

Though on an off topic note; Sam the brown Labrador in the previous photos of this build has been rushed into surgery at the vets with an expanded stomach. He ate some compressed pallets (food for the horses) that expand to about 10x their normal size. about 15 of these small pallets (about 10mm x 5mm x 3mm) will fill an entire ice cream container. Heard from the vet that they got 10 LITRES of this expanded food out of him this morning. Which is scary thinking that a dog stomach is about the size of your fist. Hope all goes well for him and we see him back at home in a few days
silly dog! That stuff has been down in the shed for a year..

    Anyways; here you go!

You know how network drives work and how to set them up? That's basicly Samba. By connecting to the VPN you setup up you can acess your files from everywhere as if they were on your machine. The VPN can also be used for safer browsing on public network like for example on your school.

About OpenVPN if I was you I would set up a VM (virtual machine) with OpenVPN server for doing this easier.

Take it out then plug the power on and off (by removing the connector) and attempt to angle it so the power pins cross or contact the wrong pin and see if you can get it to short out.

If you can't take it out of the laptop then go to the play ground and mount it securely on the merry go round at its outer edge and spin it as fast as possible, randomly stopping the spin as fast as possible then reversing the spin.

    Hey Guys,

This isn't a real build log but its similar. The story behind it is, My youngest brother (20 years of age) has disability's, the main one is Autism, in the past 5 years hes began breaking things, so i have to think of ways to stop him breaking it and build it. Things hes done are, broken 7 laptop screens by snapping them, breaking doors off the hinge, broken 3 tv's by snapping the screen or pouring water down the back of them, breaking tv controllers, media players ect

Ive given him one of the old laptops of the screen hes broken, but its to slow and hes broken the keys on the keyboard, they also are covered in chocolate milk and abit sticky... ect. So for his 21st birthday, i thought i would get him more of a computer what will be faster, but ill have to stop him from pouring water over it, and this is what i came up with, ill also post extra picture of what else ive done at the end, hope you enjoy and hope if anyone else has or knows someone like this, maybe this can help them

This is the start, where i just varnished it

    The insides

    With the Side on

This is where the USB ports are going to go

    Should look something like this

    The bottom of them

    The ON button :P

This is the Dell computer i got for cheap and you can see the wires for my external button and fan

It will go into that corner covering the power points

The computer inside the box after i bolted the box to the side of the table

With the side on ready to get set down

This is what it looks like Inside its box

    Finished product

    Finished product

    Finished product

Installed for his birthday, while he was at school (special place for the day) and its bolted to the wall, so he cant do anything to it

2 weeks later snapped the keyboard so i had to do this, its glued to the wood

    Screwed down here

I found out couple of months later that my job wasn't finished with the screen, i put perspex on the top to stop him pouring water down it but i caught him picking the monitor up and putting it on the side to pour water down.. so it had to be fixed and this is what i came up with

This is it, all ready to be installed

This is the back of it, for the cable management :P i put the wood there so he cant push the monitor back

Fully installed, bolted down and the screen cant move

    Everything completed!!

So yea hope you liked, here are the extra picture i took of things i made for him

The Tv, stop him touching it with acrylic perspex screen, and water proof with the speakers and its bolted to the wall

His Media player, the last one he kept smacking it on the desk and after about 6 months and 200+ times getting hit on the desk the hard drive finally gave up and died, so i got a new media player and hard drive and put it inside

The controllers, he use to snap them, i didnt use to have the acrylic perspex on the top but he managed to break a controller buy hitting it with his calculator....

This is his computer screen, acrylic perspex screen and over the heat vents at the top so water cant go down, there is a gap on the side so some hot air can excape, you can also see the chocolate milk on the side of the screen where he has tried to pour it in :P

This is again acrylic perspex over the stained glass because it use to push his hand through it and break it...

Well that just about does it, with most of the things ive done

Everything was cut out with a CNC machine my other brother owns and cut out for me

Hope you enjoyed it and hope it helps anyone else who is dealing with these issues :)

In the improving wireless, I suggest adding another way. Putting a cooler below the router/modem. I've experience this, heat most of the time can get these devices not to function fully as they suppose to. A simple notebook cooler can add some airflow to it, reducing the amount of heat on the device itself.

Next is the port forwarding part i'd like to add. Before doing the port forwards on the router, assign a static IP to your computer first. This is because most home users will just run things out-of-the-box. Which means they will use a DHCP server and will assign a different internal IP for the computer every time it connects. If you want to keep the existing port forward setting specifically to a certain pc, static internal IP will be better.

And i'd like to add one more tips for others. Sometimes people will complain about transferring files through LANs is slow (eg 3mb/s) even though they have Gigabit connections or just any 10/100 connections. This is because Windows will usually set the speed to Auto Negotiate. Everytime windows detect some older connections, they will assign the 10mbps speed to the LAN connection instead of 100mpbs or 1gbps.
You can change this setting by doing this.

    In Windows XP -->
Right click your LAN connection and select Open Network Connections, then double click your LAN connection. After that click Configure, then navigate to the Advance tab and choose Link Speed/Duplex Mode. From there you can choose up to 100Mbps Full Duplex if you are on a 10/100 connection or up to 1Gbps/1000Mbps Full Duplex if you are on a Gigabit connection.

    In Windows 7/8 -->
Go to your Network & Sharing center and click on your LAN Connection(Ethernet). After that everything is same as above.

Most people will find this useless but for me when I'm copying large amount of Datas across the network (eg. Backing up a computer to a home server or copying games across computers), I found that this can save me lots of time.

Other than that, Nice FAQ Thread you got here. Keep Up The Good Work

Got a question you think lots of people have asked before? Then this topic is for you! (Most likely not final version, any suggestions for improvements are very welcomed).
Things to do (feel free to leave suggestions):
Edit the order from most common to least common question.
Suggest some good routers in different price brackets.
    Suggest some VPN providers.
    Maybe add more questions.
    General polishing.

Why is my Internet so slow?

How can I improve my wireless speed?
Quick list of things you can do to improve your wireless speeds:

What do the different wireless standards (802.11n, 802.11ac, etc) mean?

2.4GHz vs. 5GHz and what does dual band mean?
    What is QoS?
What is the difference between a router, a switch and a modem?

What should I look for when buying a router?

What is port forwarding and how do I do it?

How do I access my router's web interface?

What is the difference between Megabit and Megabyte?

I have heard about this thing called pfSense, what is it?

What is a VPN and do I need one?

The router downstairs is the main router and the DHCP server, the router upstairs has the DHCP server option turned off.
No problems whatsoever with the 2 routers since I installed them in this config.
