    drigerm3 reacted to LinusTech in @LinusTech Twitter Account Hacked
    On June 28, 2016 the Linus Media Group domain registrar account was compromised.

    The exact methodology of the "hack" won't be disclosed for obvious reasons, but I can assure you that despite any claims to the contrary, the appropriate safeguards were in place on our side, and as I type this Yvonne is having a very heated phone discussion with the 3rd party responsible for the breach.

    Anyway, the thing most of you are probably wondering about right now is what this means for your forum account or personal information, and the answer is very simple:

    NOTHING.

    The "hacker" simply changed the DNS settings in the dashboard and did not at any time have access to the linustechtips.com server. Any claims of a database dump are categorically false.

    The compromised accounts - including Twitter - have been restored.

    I hope this clears things up.

    Water Cooling 101
    I have been reading a lot of posting in this sub-forum and am seeing a lot of the same questions. So I figured this forum need some basic guide to water cooling. My basic idea is to take a ton of information on the internet and condense it down to as short and simple explanation of Water cooling. This should be a good starting place for most people. You will need to much more research than just this to be a successful water cooler.

    I have spoken to a Mod and this should be made into a sticky soon.

    My goal with this guide is to be of a FAQ than more of a building guide. Try and explain everything that has to do with what goes into a custom water cooling loop. I am trying to make a guide that will work well with Linus's water cooling videos on the NCIXcom Youtube channel. Trying hard not to cover what he has but make sure nothing is missed.

    So welcome to my Basic Noobies guide to water cooling. Please feel free to comment or post with your ideas of what I could add or change.

    So why do we water cool? Why would you want to stick a tank of water in a box of very expensive electronics?
    This is a question that gets asked a lot on the forum and I thought one of our members summed it up best;

    From our own MdX MaxX;
    “It's not just about temperatures, but about noise. With water cooling, you can run fans at much lower speeds and lower noise levels than you can with air cooling and achieve the same temperatures. Especially for GPUs, I mean GPU fans get loud. Plus you have the benefit of cooling everything you want in the same loop.

    And "good enough" isn't what enthusiasts strive for. Sure, multi-hundred dollar loops aren't necessary. An NH-D14 or Silver Arrow is "good enough." But being a PC enthusiast is much more than having a "good enough" rig. Most people here would have much lower-specced PCs if they only wanted what was "good enough" for them.

    Also, it's fun. Building is fun. Taking on [such] an intensive project is a thrilling challenge for a lot of people. You get to really absorb the experience rather than putting together a system in 2-3 hours and then you're done.

    And lastly, water cooling loops are freaking gorgeous. I mean look at them.

    I would just add that for most of us that use water cooling is more than getting the best performance out of your rig. For most of us it is a hobby. Once you get started it is hard to stop. You always want to try something new or add something to you loop, or even multiple loops.

    drigerm3 reacted to NumLock21 in MSI Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium Edition
    With the launch of Skylake around the corner, motherboards makers are revealing what they have to offer and today, we get to take a look at one from MSI. The MSI Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium Edition is one of MSI's top end motherboards. Looking at the board itself, we can see it runs on socket 1151 to support the upcoming Intel Skylake processors. Under that massive heatsink it has 16 phase pwm titanium chokes, 4 dimm slots using DDR4, that's was first seen with the Intel X99. Power for this board, we have our main 24 pin, follow by 8 pin + 4 pin. On the slots, there are 4 physical x16 slots, not sure if it supports 4-way SLI or CFX, but from the spacing of those x16 slots, it might be a chance that it does. Now if it does, then 2-way will run at x16 and 4-way at x8. Out of the 4, only 2 of them have metal protective plates and to provide extra power to those slots, there is a 6 pin peg connector. For storage, it has 8x SATA III ports, with 2 pairs that's part of SATA Express and 2x M.2, but there are no U.2 connectors on this board, maybe MSI will provide or sell U.2 adapters separately or something. For overclocking MSI has provided a mini add on board called the OC dashboard (that mini card at the top right corner) where users can adjust their cpu's BCLK and CPU ratio. On it there is also slow mode switch, Go 2 bios button, fully discharge, as well as a power and reset switch. Color scheme for this board unlike their pervous OC line which features a yellow/black layout has been replaced with what looks like silver/black and that black stripe running across the board, representing a lightning bolt.

    drigerm3 reacted to F.A.T. in Polar by FAT
    Hi

    My name is Femke Agnes Toele a.k.a. FAT. You might know my work from 'Little Scratch' from ECS Modmen Contest and 'Flux' from the Bit-Tech Intel NUC contest of this year.

    I have build 'Polar" together with Tenzin who is an Industrial Design student in Rotterdam. Initially 'Polar' was build for the Hardware.info Masters of Modding competition. Wich we won!
    And now it has been selected for the MSI PRO MOD Final round.
    If you like it you can cast your vote on the MSI Global Facebook page;
    https://www.facebook.com/MSIHQFANCLUB?fref=ts

    First the design! For the competition there was an 'ECO' theme so we took our inspiration from the north pole, ice bergs and glaciers.
    The Olympic swimming pool in Bejing has these amazing shapes wo we incorporated those 'bubbels' in our design. The whole build is based on the huge Coolermaster HAF Stacker 935.

    Below you can see the renders for the design;

    These are the packages we received from MSI and Coolermaster!
    Always fun to unpack the boxes

    Lets start with taking everything off the HAF stacker.
    In this video you can see the strip down of the case.

    The first big thing we did was cut out 80mm of the case, right down the middle!

    After that the whole case was very flimsy so it's gonna take some work to get it back to shape and strong again. Bit it will be worth it. Slimming down the case this way really brings out the best of the hardware!

    Next up is the motherboard! Again in the ECO theme.

    After unpacking we could measure everything up and start cutting the panels. Our mascot 'pixel' always likes to help out

    From now on no more destroying but building!

    We are extremely excited to announce our launch on Vessel, a brand new online video platform aimed at providing high quality, curated content to online viewers

    Vessel FAQ

    What is Vessel? Vessel is a low-priced ($2.99 USD per month) subscription service that provides early access to the web’s best short-format videos from many of its most creative storytellers and best video-based talent.

    Does this mean that you won’t be putting your videos on YouTube or the free web? Our videos will continue to be on YouTube and the free web like they always have been. Vessel allows fans to support creators by subscribing to get early access to videos.

    Who is Vessel for? Vessel is for fans who want to get early access to videos from their favorite creators and support those creators by subscribing to Vessel and allowing creators to earn a lot more per view compared to the free web.

    Is putting videos behind a paywall anti-fan? We don't think so - ultimately, this enables creators to invest in making better and more ambitious content, which benefits every fan--even the ones who choose not to pay.

    What if I don’t have a credit card or find paying challenging? Vessel is committed to keeping the subscription price as low as possible, supplemented with light load of advertising. In addition, in celebration of their launch, they are giving away a full free year to fans who sign up during the first 72 hours of our launch. Use our referral link when you sign up, http://vessel.com/linustechtips, to help support the cause!

    Won’t this divide your fans since some will watch your videos before others? Even today, some fans watch videos the day they come out, some a week later. This will not change.
    Is Vessel a YouTube competitor? No. They’re each part of a much larger video ecosystem, and each of them offers a different way to help creators build their business. At the end of the day, they’re all interested in seeing that ecosystem thrive.

    Do you view Netflix or Hulu as competition? They are focused on a very different market, for professionally-produced, long-form content. Vessel is complementary in that they are a subscription video service for a different, but equally as important type of video.

    What is your contract with Vessel? What is the terms of your deal? We won’t be commenting on our contract or deal terms.

    If you have any other questions, please post them below, and we will answer them to the best of our ability!

    Now you can buy SSDs which will physically break themselves when you send an SMS, with many fail safes if something goes wrong. I couldn't find the pricing on the website, but I assume it's going to be expensive.

    "Losing a laptop full of personal files like family photos is upsetting, but losing a laptop full of private corporate info and trade secrets is instead downright terrifying. So when you absolutely can't risk misplaced data falling into the wrong hands, a GSM-equipped SSD drive that can remotely physically self-destruct guarantees the utmost of security and privacy."

    "As soon as you realize a laptop or other hardware with the SecureDrives SSD installed has gone missing, all you need to do is send a pre-defined text message to its unique cellular number and the drive will be immediately destroyed. And we're not talking a quick format to erase its contents either. The SSD's enclosure features built-in mechanisms that will physically destroy the flash memory chips inside, making the data completely unrecoverable."

    "The SSD's enclosure features built-in mechanisms that will physically destroy the flash memory chips inside, making the data completely unrecoverable."

    "The second choice is to go further and fragment the NAND Flash and security controller via a physical destrcution process that takes place after the encryption key is fliped. This physcial fragmentation effectively renders your data safe from any form of forensic data recovery technique known, now and in the future. With the NAND Flash physically broken it cannot be mounted on special Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) through which vast banks of computer processing power are used in an attempt to access your data and crack encryption codes.  "
