Dammit I had an earthquake that made the power go off, and I missed an entry point in Bitcoin. Now it'll take me 48 more hours to become rich af. #firstworldproblems

Most people would be worried about the Earthquake or an aftershock........

    @DrMacintosh That's exactly why I added the #firstworldproblems xD

I did confirm with the city authorities that there was no severe damage to any building or community. 7.2 Richter, Epicenter about 800 miles away.

Because bitcoin is totally the first thing people worry about during an earthquake....

@Crunchy Dragon of course, tech projects first family second :P

But yeah I did make sure my folks were alright before worrying about missed entries.

wow 7.2 is pretty significant actually.  Be glad it wasn't closer, and hope for the ones who were :/

@Ryan_Vickers We had an 8.5 earthquake last september... hundreds of killed and dozens of buildings razed. So this in comparison feels very irrelevant lol.

Other than the power going out no material damage was recorded.

oh wow that is strong O.o

And that's rather impressive for there to be no damage with a 7.2... even something in the 6 generally causes at least minor issues.  Must be a modern well-designed area.

@Ryan_Vickers Our city's pretty earthquake proof ever since a massive earthquake in '85. (almost) every building afterwards was built with an earthquake of that magnitude in mind by law, so I'm glad it was only a dozen buildings. The one in the 80s had the city looking like it had been carpet bombed.

That's good thinking.  So many places that should do that do not, and so they just suffer the same "carpet bombing" effect again and again.  Then again, those are often cases of not having the capital to do it properly, rather than not having the will or the know-how, so that's a different issue.

I'm more astounded by the proper use of "raze" than the joke about "tech first, family second"...

    UPS. UPS EVERYTHING!!! #firstworldproblems

Buy a Linus UPS. I think it was only what? $30,000. (I'm probably wrong I have pretty trash memory.)

You would have to UPS your modem as well to have an internet connection, and even then it might not work depending what hardware is up stream from you and how it has been affected.

@Windows7ge you mean the Linus(ish) sized battery?

  20. Canada EH

Linusish sized battery is very small for a small guy

That was a commercial sized unit from EATON iirc, not really practical for the home unless you really just have that much money to blow xD

@Crunchy Dragon Yes. I'd look it up to confirm the price myself but my computers off, it's 12:52AM, I've been at work since 4:30PM, and I'm lazy...

@Ryan_Vickers I'm aware of this. You'd have to UPS your computer, switch, router, modem, even then there's no guarantee your ISP has battery backup on every line outside your home. (Although I'd expect them to.)
