  1. Honestly I spent about 120 canadian in a day and didn't look back. Last year was a lot of deliberation and not even 50 spent over the whole sale. So I believe it. Not sure why but this time there was great advertising for games that I wanted to play and ones I hadn't heard of that interested me. Must be some market research at work. GG Steam.
  2. Sorry mods for the double post, couldn't figure out how to add this quote to the edit. And no you wouldn't be screwing up at all. That cpu and either GPU would be an awesome budget system. Pair it with at least 8gb of 1600-1866mhz ram and a cheap ssd and you'll be laughin!
  3. Not meaning to judge but maybe just save up? You can find really good deals in classified ads if you know what you're looking for. Safer bet would be on a community like this I'm sure you could find someone to ship you some parts that they don't need anymore. But if you HAVE to have it now then go with the pentium G3258 and overclock the crap out of it. And the 750ti.
  4. If you go on youtube you'll see people getting similar or better than console performance and quality level with a 750ti and a similar i3 (or even the pentium g3258 which is an option as well) and going with an older architecture AMD part for cpu would really hinder your performance there. on lower end intel and nvidia really shines especially with that setup.
  5. Stay away from the athlon. And maybe see if you can get a lightly used i5 from a gen or two back instead. Would be a HUGE step up from the athlon and definite improvement over the i3. And really the I3 6100 is reasonably priced for the performance you'll get.
  6. The processor shouldn't matter if its between the two. Gaming performance will be similar but the 5820k has more PCI-E lanes and will allow you to run SLI at 16x-8x instead of 8x-8x with the 6700k. Also I believe the PCI-E 1x lanes are decoupled on the 6700k so they don't take away from your total lane count when using extra peripherals. You will really get similar performance from either processor though as running a card at 8x vs 16x on pci-e Gen3 is very minimal. You'll see like 1fps difference in your max FPS so its really preference. The x99 boards are still really expensive too so take that into consideration. 1440p: 980ti 1080p: 970 Power supply go for something 80Plus Gold at least. This will give you arond 90% efficiency and good clean power to your components. EVGA supernovas are really good. As are the Corsair RMI units. Something like the 750G2 or the RM750I would be good. Cooling you can go for a Noctua NH-D14 if you wanna go air, trades blows with the H100i from corsair (dual 120mm AIO liquid cooler) the only thing is that you have to be careful when transporting as the noctua weighs about a KG. As for case just make sure you get something with enough space and good airflow. Fractal Design Define R5 is a really solid case with enough room for whatever you need. Oh and for storage you don't need anything super crazy unless you want moar epeen. Just get a good reliable SSD for boot OS (250GB is good size) and a decent size HDD for long term storage (2TB is typical these days) and if you really want you can get a really big SSD and throw a bunch of games on it as well. As it stands my 250gb has two or three large games on it that benefit from a faster drive (load times, Arkham Knight and Fallout 4) and my 1TB has all the rest. Also go at least 16GB the prices are pretty decent right now. 8GB is starting to get dicey for some applications and 32GB is not necessary. Hope that helps! Feel free to PM me if you wanna put a real parts list together.
  7. where did you buy it from? i was able to use the serial number on my cooler master PSU to get an RMA. They just go from the manufacture date instead of purchase date. Also if you bought it online an invoice will do as well.
  8. Agreed, you will have benefits to either but it depends on your main focus of use. As afyeung said some asrock boards will still allow for baseclock overclocking on the skylake parts so you may get a benefit there especially if you already have some DDR4. If you have to buy new RAM and a new mobo anyway I'd still probably get the 6700 personally since it does have a decently higher % of IPC (~10%) and if you can overclock it well enough you'll have a beastly little system depending on which GPU you pair it with. It should also run a bit cooler and does have some other minor architectural changes that might benefit you but I can't remember what they are lol. Google is your friend
  9. You want to make sure that your temps don't go above 90 in your stress tests and that you can at least do prime95 for 6 hours. Some people will tell you differently but you have to consider how long you will be putting your CPU under load and test within those limits. If you're folding 24/7 then a lower OC with a slightly higher voltage and temps that don't exceed 80 would be ideal. If you're gaming you can allow it to push into the 90s in a stress test (AVX and AVX2 are not used in games yet and the prime test in the newest version simulates something like 115% workload) because the most you'll see in a SUPER stressful gaming session will likely be around 10-20C below that. If you're encoding video with say Handbrake which uses AVX instructions you want to consider keeping your prime95 temps around 80 max as well since rendering can take a long time and you dont want to put undue stress on your cpu. And keep in mind that the 100mhz overclock you're looking at with potentially an extra 0.1v will NOT gain you ANY noticeable margins in either gaming, encoding, or general use. strictly ePeen. What kind of cooling are you using? And what are your load temps? Just out of curiosity. And yes as MAtt100HP has said, the stock settings are a safe bet calculated from testing thousands of processors (I heard that number somewhere, maybe JayzTwoCents) and finding the lowest common denominator for voltage and temps. They also assume you have some sort of aftermarket cooler so don't go running these types of voltages on stock cooler otherwise you'll experience severe throttling and unsafe temps. Good luck and happy overclocking!
  10. Yeah if you can get a 290 for a good price go for that. Depending how big of a city you live in you should be able to find one sub $200 if you're in Canada and sub $150 if you're in the US. And even though you may be cpu limited in some games, if you have the funds to upgrade again in the near future, picking up a used haswell cpu and mobo would really make that 290 shine. Also some people have been able to successfully flash a 290x rom onto a 290 although i'm not sure the specifics about that. You'd have to google it up. As for the 7000 series cards at least get a 280x or 380 since the driver support will be better despite them being the same card. I do believe 7000 parts ARE legacy now.
  11. Duuuuuuude! Noooooooooo! please please please before you do anything else ever again, do some research!
  12. Yeah definitely wait for Polaris if you're impatient or Pascal if you think you can handle 8 more months ;). Like others have said upgrade from a 980 right now would be kind of pointless unless you go for SLI 980Ti or something like that. Also DX12 is in its infancy and you probably won't see gains over DX11 for at least a year when developers are comfortable with the features and are coding specifically for the API as opposed to implementing DX12 features in a base DX11 game. Same happened with DX11 and DX10 in their infancy. So if you REALLY want to get a minor upgrade go for the 980Ti but really I'd say wait it out and see what Polaris has to offer. You may be able to get two midrange Polaris cards in crossfire that absolutely stomp a 980Ti. From what I remember they were saying that the midrange Polaris (coming out mid 2016) will have similar performance to or higher than the 290x and will at LEAST feature GDDR5X and will have MUCH lower power consumption because of the FinFET process. So putting two of those together could easily be the upgrade you're looking for and could also cost close to what a single 980Ti would now.
  13. Okay thanks for that. I think I have it set on High but I'll check to see. I know other people are having issues in the Geothermal Valley as well even on tank hardware. Most other places run at a buttery 60fps, even ones with high detail and long distance. And turning other settings down in GV doesn't seem to make much difference. There were one or two places like this in TR2013 that got fixed with a patch as well (was a cpu issue with object display in that one). This one I feel it's something to do with all the steam everywhere and the way the lighting interacts with it because during the night time in the same area it's not as bad. Edit: Yeah I just checked it's set on high and it even gives a warning when I change it to Very High that it will take more than 4GB. Still pretty sure it's something to do with optimization. Actually have been waiting for more patches before I finish the game since I enjoy exploring and it's one of the nicer looking areas and the ups and downs really mess with immersion for me.
