  1. Hey all, Pretty new hear, so sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I was hoping to find a sticky or thread about egpus, but wasn't able to find much besides others posting their individual questions so I will post mine as well. I am due to get a new work laptop, one of the following models ZBook Mobile Workstation-Z14u G6 EliteBook Notebook PC-x360 1030 G4 They will both have the i5-8365U, 16gb ram (let me know if more specs are needed) They both have Thunderbolt ports and my assumption is that the Elitebook would be the better of the 2 as far as performance due to the larger size/better cooling even with similar CPU specs. However I don't know how many PCIE lanes they have and I am not sure how to check that. Also wondering if there are any new egpus in the works that I should maybe wait for? I haven't heard much about them at all lately but I would guess there must be some newer ones in the works. I currently have a VEGA 56 and would ideally use that card and put my old 7970 back in my desktop. I use the laptop significantly more than I use my desktop though so the more performance from the laptop the better. I mostly ask because I won't be buying this equipment for at least a few months, but I want to have my planning done or at least a very good idea of the direction to go. Thanks!
  2. I have a machine with a vega 56 in it, however I keep this machine running 24/7 but the graphics card is not needed a majority of the time, maybe 1-2 hours a day while gaming and slightly longer on the weekend. What is the best way to save power? Should I create an overclock profile and undervolt/underclock and then switch to a normal profile when I want to game? Is there a better option? Maybe this isn't needed, but still if I could save some power I would do it. For whatever reason when I looked earlier my gpu was at 60C and showing like 5-10% load with nothing running. This appears to have resolved itself after I reset bios defaults. Not sure if I accidentally changed something, the only thing now is I set ram to xmp profile 2 to hit 2933mhz. GPU shows only using 5watts now.
  3. I built a PC with the initial intention of having it host my Plex server and a few other things non gaming related. However I got a Vega 56 for $250 so those plans have now changed. The PC will be in the living room and I still plan to run my Plex and other programs, but I will also be gaming on this machine now. Is there a quick/easy way to switch between more of a quiet/power saving mode and then quickly switch to gaming mode? This is my part list, https://pcpartpicker.com/user/goebs86/saved/#view=X93YTW I have noticed if I keep my power options set to the Ryzen profile my CPU stays at max/boost clocks so I changed it to have the CPU only run at 50%. I am not sure how else to keep the CPU from constantly running at max speeds when it doesn't need to. I will also want the same thing on my GPU. I want them to run using very minimal resources probably 95% of the time (this is a 24/7 on machine), but easily go to normal/boost clocks for gaming. I thought was was going to be default behavior but for the CPU at least that doesn't seem to be the case. The only thing I changed in the bios was I set the ram to use XMP profile 2 so the ram is running at 2933mhz. Thanks!
  4. I got my laptop in October of last year it is an Asus GL551JW -DS71. I have mainly played World of Warcraft this entire time without issue. However recently it has started getting much hotter than usual and now starts thermal throttling after about 5 minutes in game. I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit yesterday and I have the latest bios as of yesterday. I have contacted support and RMA'd the laptop however issues persist. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing this it had been working fine for months. The temperature in the house is between 68-74F at all times and has been the same the entire time. The laptop has been cleaned even though it wasn't really dirty I couldn't see any dust or anything. Also I believe the motherboard was swapped when ASUS had the laptop in for repair. After the last format I left the game at the recommended settings provided except for screen resolution which I set to 1920x1080. The settings are at the Good preset across the board. I also tried Overwatch over the weekend and was having the exact same issue with overheating. I have tried locking my frames below 60fps however then I start to see what I believe is tearing. The GPU and CPU appear to use the same heatsink/fans and the CPU gets to about 90C and the GPU around 80C. I use a lapdesk and recently purchased a side blowing laptop cooler which does seem to help if I run it at full speed. Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be? Edit: Just an update I have been consistently working with ASUS support on this to help determine what the issue is and again they believe it to be hardware related. Does anyone have any input on the 960M laptop GPU? I am really wondering if this is the problem.. I don't want to mess with ASUS a lot if I don't have to and I would prefer not to RMA again which is what they are currently suggesting. It seems odd though that it has to be hardware considering it was just randomly one day that I started having issues. I swear I was playing at 1920x1080 and had settings maxed. However even last night playing at 1366x768 on ultra I was getting extremely high temps. CPU over 90C and GPU over 75C. It is just getting really frustrating. If anyone has experience with a 960M that is my new question is do you have these same issues? It happens on the default good settings at 1920x180 in WoW and it happened with the default settings in Overwatch at 1920x1080. Thanks again!
