    Intel i7-980X Still Worth It?

    I actually own an i7-980X. Unfortunately I could only get a 4.0 GHz overclock on the bad boy stable, but it did its job from 2010 to 2016 (replaced it with an R5-1600X, and now an 8700K). As long as you give it a nice overclock, it will still game fairly well. I own a GTX 1070 and obviously saw some CPU bottlenecking in a lot of games, but I think you should be able to go as high as a GTX 1060 without any issue. It will still do fine for 60 Hz gaming. My chip at 4.0 GHz in Cinebench R15 scored 927 on the multi-core test and 123 on the single-core. The single-core is pretty low, but it will fare pretty damn well in more modern games that can use the threads. Just don't expect to do a lot of 144 Hz gaming on it (Overwatch actually plays beautifully on it, though. I would consistently get 120+ FPS).

  5. Uh, make sure your mobo isn't frying it with too much voltage. Auto-overclock utilities have been known to overvolt and slowly kill CPU's over time. I saw a thing where someone found out it was pushing 1.5v through his brand new 1800X and it died in a month. If it's above 1.35v, might wanna back down a bit.
  6. You are correct, I meant 0.025v. Just a brain fart is all. However once you think you've gotten close to your max overclock, you should get a bit more precise than simple 0.025v steps. I had my R5-1600X at 1.337v for a 4.0 GHz overclock, for example. The smallest step down my Mobo would let me take was to 1.331v, and that was unstable. I think each increment on that board was 0.00625v? Anyway, you get the idea. More sweeping adjustments till you figure out where your temperature ceiling/stability threshold is, then get precise to make it perfect.
  7. It'll run them, but overclocking will make them run better. That's why we overclock. If he bought a K-type CPU, then he absolutely should since he paid for the ability to do so. Overclocking ain't some scary backwater thing anymore. As for overclocking, just start at something low like 4.7 GHz and 1.25v, and start increasing frequency (4.8 -> 4.9 -> 5.0 ... etc.), and stress with something like AIDA64 for like 20 minutes between increments to see if you get an immediate crash. If you crash, you'll need to either lower frequency or increase voltage. Doing either will increase temperature. Once your temps start passing 80 C, I'd stop the overclock there and back off maybe 100 MHz to stop you from getting too hot. Every time you make a change, stress test to ensure stability. I personally step the voltage in 0.25v increments every time I need more, and once I think I've got my max overclock I'll try to get the voltage closer to the exact amount I need to keep it stable. Don't increase voltage past 1.35v on Intel CPU's in my opinion if you want something that'll last for a long, long time. That's really all there is to it. Increase frequency till you crash, then increase voltage until it's stable. Repeat until you get too hot, hit maximum safe voltage (1.35v), or until you're unstable no matter what. If you're getting too hot, back off on frequency and the voltage until you're back in good temperatures, then dial in exact voltage you need to keep it stable. If you're just straight-up unstable at X frequency, back off on frequency first and then dial in the voltage you need to keep it stable. Aim for the highest frequency you can run at the lowest voltage possible in safe temperatures.

    Why did you buy an Android phone?

    I use Android because I can download and install custom apps. Additionally, I don't need iTunes to do something as simple as putting music or photos on my phone, or to transfer downloads off of it. It literally works like a USB flash drive. I don't have Apple telling me how to use something I paid $700 for. I can do what I want with my own device. Oh, and the glorious headphone jack. Praise be to it.

    I just stopped watching LTT altogether. Channels like GamersNexus and Hardware Unboxed do what LTT used to be known for, but better these days. I only come to the forums for the community and discussion as it is, thankfully, still informative and tech-focused here.
  10. And to think, before Ryzen's launch, I told my dad to hold off of AMD stock due to them making pretty garbage products beforehand; that Ryzen could turn out to just be all hype and no muscle like many of their products in the past... Boy do I feel stupid.
  11. I kind of don't care. All these game launchers these days are ridiculous. I'm staying on Steam and that's it unless they do something absolutely abhorrent for consumers. Having to log into six different services to play my games is stupid.
  12. Let's get rid of the screen, too. Phones are for calling, and occasionally music. It will make it more waterproof, and make the device shorter and thinner.

    This is almost certainly the case, especially if you play single-threaded games at 1080p. You should probably overclock it if you haven't.

    It's honestly probably best to just let the monitor turn off after 10 minutes or so than to use a screen saver these days. We don't use CRT's anymore, and the backlight and the pixels themselves have a lifespan.
