  1. This will be a place for events within the Folding (and sometimes Boinc) community to be posted. It is also a good place to introduce yourself to the rest of the team and ask questions if you have them. If you have an event you would like to organize post it here and PM me about it. Current or upcoming events: (If you have an event you are trying to organize or would like to participate in please post in this thread and PM me) LTT Official Folding Month!!! Starting November 1st (12:00am GMT): Folding@home team LTT id#: 223518 Boinc teams are all called LinusTechTips_Team (as far as I'm aware please correct me if I am wrong Results from past events: First LTT folding week results (3/26-4/1/2018): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NerB4jOfgEG_l9mcxxMNTe6hboswk6V-hLiSLMDp7gc/edit?usp=sharing My folding story and also my reasoning for the first event: It was a long time ago when discovered this thing called distributed computing and a piece of software that will use your computer power to help fight against many diseases including cancer . When I started folding I also joined the Linus Tech Tips team (it was actually @Slick's old Ultimate Distributed Computing build that got me into it.) and considering that the mining craze had died down a bit and its still cold for those of us in the northern hemisphere. I was wondering if we could get the whole community together to donate as much of their compute power as they can to Folding At Home (yes it is true that every little bit helps) for some amount of time (title says a week but can easily be extended if we can do it). Obviously the encouragement is to fold to the Linus Tech Tips Team #223581 but since folding is a good cause no matter what there would be no complaints about folding for another team. But one of the pieces of this that really encouraged me was looking at the team ranking for LTT and realizing that we have dropped to 14th considering that when we started we were at least 11th. Long story short fold (preferably for LTT), get your friends folding get their friends folding and even if you bring in complete noobs we have a whole community here to help them. I will link the guides here as well as the video that got me into it. For those that still need some encouragement here's the video that started it all for me: Install guide (yes its just that easy): Tips and tricks (hasn't been updated since July but as far as I'm aware nothing has really changed): Facts and Fiction: If you are too lazy for all of that here is a link to the site to download it http://folding.stanford.edu/ If any of you have any questions or need help getting your system set up (there are some things that can be tricky at first and I know sometimes reading the guides can be tedious) please feel free to post here where people with more experience than I can help you or pm me if need be. TLDR: A team that folds together... stays together?... you know what I'm sticking with that one. @Whiskers Huge thank you to everyone involved from all of you and the moderators getting this pinned to people just helping each other out on setups and spreading the word to anyone here who is just folding. I never though that this was going to pick up any traction at all and now its an actual bonafide event. So thank you all and let the folding begin!
  2. As the title says this will LTT's first ever folding month!!! Starts November 1st (12:00am GMT) Ends December 1st (12:00am GMT) UPDATE: Timezone changed to GMT thanks to @Ben Quigley volunteering to do daily updates and score tracking. Folding@home team LTT id#: 223518 (This event is only for folding for team LTT you will not qualify if you are folding independent or for another team, sorry.) Things are off to a nice start for this event. Find daily updates written by our very own @Ben Quigley here: Fall/Winter is that time of year where things get cold for those of us in the northern hemisphere (sorry to those of you in the southern one just a lot less people down under) so instead of turning your heat all the way up why not put that power bill to good use and help find cures to diseases that plague the world from Hep C to Breast Cancer to Alzheimer's . It s pretty simple format. The whole idea is to fold as much as you can for a month straight. The entire goal is to make as many points for the LTT folding team as we can (we do encourage all folding not just for team LTT if you really prefer not to) As a bonus there will be a spreadsheet to sign up for so that we can track your folding progress over the course of the month, with bragging rights at stake. Special badges will be awarded to all who meet the minimum participation requirement including for this event only a Founders badge. (minimum requirements: 100k points, 15WUs, and 15 days of having activity over the course of the whole month) Sign up for the event here: Sign up now: Signups are now closed for this event. Official badges for this an future events: Founders badge (for this event only): Tiered badges for this and future events (based on number of events participated in): To qualify for badges you must meet the minimum requirements for participation which for this event will be as follows minimum requirements: 100k points, 15WUs, and 15 days of having activity over the course of the whole month. This is subject to change for future events as we find out what the sweet spot is to include as many people as possible but not make it too easy to just get a free badge. If you need a little encouragement our last folding event turned into the Folding community board but all of the info can be found here (as well as a great way to ask for help from anyone in the folding community here, we love to help whoever we can from beginners to pros) : Don't forget to sign up for a passkey! info to do so can be found in the threads below. If you need a little more encouragement the purpose of folding is for disease and cancer research and more information on it can be found on their website here: https://foldingathome.org/ FAQ/Tips and Tricks: Facts and Fiction (ideal config help): @Whiskers @Ithanul @Ben Quigley @iamdarkyoshi @straight_stewie @James

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

This is definitely true. And to be fair part of this delay is a combination of whiskers and I both running into the busiest weeks of our lives at the same time which slowed down communication between us as well.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

I know everyone has been very patient when it comes to this. But normal workflow for handing out badges on the forum is maybe one or two a day. I am not a mod so I don't know exactly what goes into actually setting the badge. But beyond it being the holidays and everyone being extremely busy (4th quarter is always the worst in my industry) we are asking for 154 badges all of which need to be double checked for integrity and on top of all of that these badges are completely new and didn't even exist as a thought 2 1/2 months ago. I do appreciate all of your patience and @Ben Quigley and myself are working with Whiskers to make this process as smooth as possible. I assure you that you all will have your forum bling.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Yes Linux guide! something definitely needed for us plebs. That is pretty quick to the draw considering that I'm pretty sure that is minutes after I posted it to the thread. lol In the name of science?... lol

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

That makes sense. I swear I double checked that number like 3 times because it was so out there. lol. Thank you so much for doing that you really don't have to but much appreciated. And definitely well done claiming your rightful throne.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Ok so after a wait that is way too long. Here are the much anticipated results of folding month!!! Before we get into bragging rights I just wanted to thank all of you for participating. As I have mentioned many times this was by far and away a much bigger turnout than I think anyone expected. And as just us here as part of the event, not event including the rest of the LTT team which was also folding at a killer rate. We earned almost 2.9 billion (yes BILLION!) points and completed 76003 work units! and because of all of that we were able to climb the team back to #12 overall which I haven't seen since I started folding years ago! I also want to give an even bigger shout out to @Ben Quigley and @Gorgon Who not only volunteered themselves to help when it came to stat tracking and everything but essentially stepped up way beyond that to basically take over and not only provide all of you with daily updates and troubleshooting help but went way beyond that to simplify the process of everything that needed to be done in the background. Trust me they put in some hard hours and deserve as much recognition as possible. All I had was an idea to fold for a month and the two of them really stepped up to make this as good as it was so be sure to thank them where ever you can. Now into some of the more juicy stuff that I know you have all been waiting for... When it comes to points production. There really aren't any surprises in who the top three are. They might have traded blows a few times but coming into the last week or so it was fairly set in stone who was going to take the podium here. In 1st place with a massive 249,018,046 points (to put that in perspective most teams don't fold that in a month) is the king himself, your royal highness @King Poet!!! In the next two slots on the points podium you will find two people that before this month weren't even folding. In 2nd with 225,872,887 points we have @Tomerrs which is even more impressive when you consider that he was only folding for 28 out of the 30 days in the month (what would happen if he was folding the extra 2 days we wont know until next folding month...) And in 3rd with 211,812,417 points we have @jakkuh_t who as we know was using hardware barrowed from LMG but just as encouragement for the rest of you next time there is nothing wrong with that. Just don't get fired or break the law and we don't have a problem with anyone's hardware you fold with. Now for the podium for most Work Units. Believe it or not this is actually different since work units are dependent on the hardware used its possible to get a bunch of small work units and crank them out really fast for less points. NACL folding is probably the easiest way of doing this but in the end its all work done. In 1st with a seemingly excessive count of 4181 work units we have @givingtnt my guess is that a lot of NACL and CPU folding went into this one because that is over 1000 higher than either of the other two spots on our podium for this one. In 2nd with 2978 WU's is @Ishimuro And because we cant seem to get rid of him @King Poet takes 3rd with 2788WU's likely because of having so many different slots folding all at once. And our last catagory is one that is a bit more unusual compared to the other two considering how many of you here are new to folding but it is most improved. Basically whoever climbed their way highest in the ranks over the course of the competition. The way we estimated this (since some many of you were brand new to folding let alone the LTT team.) was by assigning everyone who wasn't on the team on the 1st an initial rank of 11000 since at the time the team had roughly that many members. And here are your results. In 1st is no surprise considering he came in second overall is @Tomerrs who climbed 10970 ranks on team LTT. The only surprise here is that he wasn't already folding for us. Good to know we now have another powerhouse on our team from now on!!! 2nd is another one to expect with @jakkuh_t who climbed 10967 ranks on the team. To be expected with the power we all know he had access too. Hopefully next time we can get more of the LMG office involved so that there might be a battle for who gets to use what hardware. And in 3rd by only one spot is @_Rlocke who came in just under 2nd with 10966. Didn't think that battle was going to come so close highly impressive. And finally I want to do another round of thankyou's to the rest of the people who made this happen. Obviously @Ben Quigley and @Gorgon again for the amazing work they did. (really cant emphasize enough how much they made this happen). Also to @Imbellis @seoz and @Ryois who helped out in the chaos of the first week stat tracking. Also to @Whiskers and @Ryan_Vickers who helped come up with the badges and make that happen for all of you. And also to @James for getting us on the WAN show to get the word out and @jakkuh_t for getting the word out even further with the giveaway that LMG did for the folding community. And last but definitely not least want to thank the rest of you for being a part of this team I know we say it as a folding community but this proved it to be more true than ever it really does take each one of you to make this team what it is and to have brought us back to 12th overall in the world for folding teams and 3rd for the month in production so again thanks to each and every one of you with out each of you no matter how small your contribution this team wouldn't be whole. Now the part that I know you have all been waiting for here is a link to the results sheets that we have been keeping the whole time so that you can all nerd out over the numbers. I may do some editing over time to make things look nicer but this is the final product. If you find an issue in it for some reason pm myself and copy @Ben Quigley and @Gorgon and we will address you concern. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ae0fqYzyI5sGcLuajtPidSG50Yad2t3EudYNA6HQct0/edit?usp=sharing The following is the list of people who qualified for the badges. Thank you all again for participating and we definitely hope to see you all in the future events that we do with both folding and Boinc if you are interested.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Hey sorry again for the extended delays. Just finished all the numbers. And now going to put together the final post and announcement. Should be done by tomorrow including a list of those who qualified for badges! Will also be releasing the datasheet to the public (read only for obvious reasons) so that you can see all the stats you want to. Including the daily production! Thank you all for being patient.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Huge write up tomorrow that will be both a post and edit to to the original post with official ranks for who came where as well as many shout outs for other achievements we feel are worth mentioning! But definitely a huge thank you to everyone who participated. As @Ben Quigley @Gorgon and I mentioned many times this is much bigger than any of us could have ever imagined!!!

If it makes you feel better you missed the deadline by more than a bit considering signups were closed on the 7th. lol

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Just to make sure no one pushes too far. Folding is not worth getting fired for. Lol. That out of the way the only thing I'm taking from work hardware wise is the 4u chassis that was being thrown away. But it takes an atx motherboard so I bought the x79 setup used and the only thing work is paying for is the power.
  14. palespartan

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

I splurge bought an x79 mobo with a quad-core xeon and 16 g of ram to put into a 4u case for my 3 "extra" gpu's to be folding 24/7 in a much less Jerry rigged system. (as much as I love what I am now calling the "mutually assured destruction" setup I have in the office.) Oh yeah. And on a 24/7 basis I cannot keep up. lol. But I am working my way back through the ranks to try to be just one spot below you.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Figured since we are in the last week of folding here I would post up the pics of my rigs running. This one is the "reliable (tm)" setup I have in the office. (the system on the right is currently running my other 970 G1 gaming instead of the 670 in the pic) note how the system on the right has its own power supply and then the GPU power is coming from the PSU for the other system mind you this means a reboot of either system will inevitably crash both. This one is much less jerryrigged since it is my gaming tower (note how the 670 is magically in both pics. Shhhh....) its sitting in a define s and to improved airflow and temps the front panel is taken off as well as the side panel (gave me a 3c drop on the 1080ti). I also get crap from my roommates all the time for having my monitors setup like this but I like it. Last we have my AW13 R3. This is definitely the nicest looking of the group. but this is my DD for work, fun, basically everything I do that isn't gaming is done on this so it doesn't quite fold full time due to travel from a to b and such and also runs the gpu straight up to 90c when folding so after the month is over this will not be folding anymore. But it runs a 1060 for anyone wondering. P.S. should we have a vote for who has the sketchiest folding system? for who has the best? let me know.

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

I'm surprised Linus is letting him fold under his own name as opposed to making him fold under Linus' name or LMG. Yes to all three of those. Yeah this will be much easier next time (now that we know what were doing and will close entries at the start of the event)
  17. palespartan

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

If we can get back to rank 12 we will officially be back to where we were when I first started folding years ago. That is insane.
  18. palespartan

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Lol. didin't you just buy a 1080 just for folding? We all had the same idea. This is by far and away the coolest thing ever. I am completely floored by the fact that not only did we pull this off but we were able to do it in the month. Just for some perspective for those who are new to folding if you looked at the team overtake stats for us 2 months ago it would have told you our next overtake would be 2.5 years away and that we had 3 teams that would overtake us within that time.
  19. palespartan

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Glad you're home and ok. But take it easy if you have to we'll be fine.

You're not doing that already? That sucks. But at least you are still guardian of the top 10.

    Fold8 - 2-slot Folding Rig

I'm sure they have some bare bones 4u server chassis that would be compatible with 1151 xeon chips but that would probably be same budget as going x99 anyways. If you don't care about all the gaming features then I would drop to a lower chipset like the H series or something. Its not like Intel lets you overclock a celeron anyways. This entire month Ive been running my define s without its front cover on for the added airflow. It works really well. If you want any other specs to help you out I don't mind taking measurements or anything. Another really easy thing to do would be to take the front cover for the define S and cut the front out of it and replace it with a mesh screen or something. Would be a really easy mod since its all plastic and a completely open front with no 5 1/4" bays.

    Fold8 - 2-slot Folding Rig

If you do want supermicro look back at their atx boards for the z270 gen and look into 7th gen Pentium. That should work pretty well. http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Core/index.cfm?mlg=0

Its ok I think it was just 117xx WU's not any 141xx which is really good.

    Fold8 - 2-slot Folding Rig

Not sure on what motherboards will be best spacing wise for the GPU's nor am I sure of what budget you are looking to spend on that part of the setup but if this is going to dedicated to folding and remote and completely headless maybe a board with a drac would be a good thing to look for. The asus WS boards usually have one but that might be out of budget. Edit: mining boards also have the same thing I'm personally running a biostar TB85 right now I think it has Drac functionality but haven't taken the time to try to set it up yet. (it only has one 16x slot though so keep that in mind if looking for mining boards)

    LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Lol. Learned that because of foldings mislabeling of my gpus when I have multiple in a system that when you delete a slot and restart the computer after taking it out it deletes both WU's and gives you a fresh one when you start again... But all just jumbling things around maybe we'll see an increase in PPD coming soon... For a 750ti if you could get a riser cable to run it in 1x that probably wouldn't bottle neck it if you have the connection to spare. Considering that he is having trouble getting that thing to even load all 8 VMs there is no way he will be able to just put windows on it and run it with all 8 on 1 vm even. But there are still the current editor workstation which all have x99 boards and titan xps and quadros I think that just sit there at night not doing anything... And then the power grid failed... lol Thanks for participating this far. And definitely look into undervolting gpu's to do it for the future or keep a low amount of folding power going long term if you can. Also one strategy is to set up folding in a room you would likely use a heater for anyways so that maybe you don't have to as much. But we will see you next time around.
