Upgrading my IBM System x3650 M4 server
EndlessHorizons replied to EndlessHorizons's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Reopening this thread due to discovered concerns. So I have formed up an upgrade path for this system, but I am not sure about the following things for this system: I have noticed that this system is fitted with a Xeon E5 v1 processor right now. Is it possible to upgrade to dual Xeon E5 v2 processors? Looking to upgrade to E5-2660v2's. Chipsets and sockets are the same, but I would like to be on the sure side so that this server won't malfunction. Is it possible for me to fit the system with a GTX 1070 even when having 2x 550w power supplies installed? I have read the manual and noticed a clause that might hinder this upgrade. I will be installing a Palit GTX 1070 Dual. This GPU needs an 8-pin PCIe connector. This GPU also has the dimensions of 252mm x 112mm. -
Upgrading my IBM System x3650 M4 server

I see. At this point, I'm looking to just remove all of the drive cages then manually putting and stacking my 3.5" HDDs on the open slots. I'll then be connecting them regularly by SATA cables attached to the 2.5" backplane. I'm not sure if this is fine, but I think that would be the cheapest solution for this server. (This will be used for a homelab setup anyway). Thank you very much for the help @leadeater! -

Damn, that's a bummer. If that's the case, how would my upgrade path go? I'd like to get rid of my 2.5" drives and replace it with my existing 3.5" SATA HDDs (4TB or greater, to be exact). I believe that 2.5" HDDs that are 4TB or greater isn't as common, and that 2.5" SSDs are still expensive. -
Upgrading my IBM System x3650 M4 server
EndlessHorizons posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Good day! I'm currently looking to upgrade my IBM System x3650 M4 server's backplane from an 8-bay 2.5" SAS/SATA to a 6-bay 3.5" SAS/SATA. I've been researching on how this upgrade would go and I've finally concluded that I need to change the backplane for this server. My problem now is the compatible backplanes for this certain server. There were no conclusive list of part numbers that can be installed on this system (at least, from what I have researched from the internet and on IBM's website). Based on my research, I have found that this certain part number (90Y5091 - IBM 90Y5091 X3650M4 6-PAC 3.5" Hard Drive Backplane) approximately matches the dimensions of the backplane on my server, however, I would not want to buy it as i'm not sure if it would fit my server. Would anyone with this server confirm my research so that I could buy that certain part? Here's the current configuration of my server: IBM System x3650 M4 (S/N: 7915I36) 1x 8-bay 2.5" SAS/SATA backplane with P/N: FRU94Y7751 2x 300GB 2.5" SAS Drives on RAID 0 (will sell once I get confirmation on the backplane) 1x Intel Xeon E5-2640 Processor (looking to upgrade to 2x E5-2660v2) 48GBs of DDR3 ECC RAM 2x 550w 80+ Platinum PSUs -
Mid tower case for an EATX build

Ok, Noctua fans or the Corsair ML140 then! Again, thank you very much! -

BTW, I am sorry for pinging you again! But, do you happen to know the best 140mm case fan for the MC500P? Or best 140mm case fan in general? Thanks in advance! -

Good thing I halted when I was about to press the order button. Switching to the MC500P! Thank you very much for your help! -
Mid tower case for an EATX build

I would go for this due to its price and design, but it would not fit an Asus Zenith Extreme Motherboard (which is an EATX board), based on Fractal's website. -

I was about to order the Enthoo Pro M TG but upon final checking, found out that the Enthoo Pro M TG only supports EATX motherboards up to 26.4cm wide. The Asus Zenith Extreme is 27.7cm wide. Will the Enthoo Pro M TG handle the 1.3cm excess from the motherboard? -
Mid tower case for an EATX build
EndlessHorizons replied to EndlessHorizons's topic in Power Supplies
Sorry for the late reply! Was working. Anyway, this is the most detailed answer that I got from the different forums I posted on. Thank you very much! The build is a Threadripper 1950X (with NZXT Kraken X62), Asus Zenith Extreme, Zotac GTX 1080Ti AMP. Just checked this case. It's available here, so I would just switch the MasterBox with the MasterCase MC500P, which makes the list (arranged by price, PH price converted to USD): Phanteks Eclipse P400 (Tempered Glass) (~$85) Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Black RGB (Tempered Glass) (~$123) Cooler Master MasterCase MC500P (Tempered Glass) (~$130) Fractal Design R6 (Tempered Glass) (~$185) Based on your final recommendation, I'm now eyeing on the Enthoo Pro M TG or the MC500P. The Define R6 is a bit over the budget, but I'm still considering it due to its good airflow, build quality and aesthetics. -

So with the airflow problem, that leaves me with 2 cases to choose from: the Cooler Master MasterBox Pro 5 or the Fractal Design R6 (or other cases suggested by other people (if there's any)) -

Never really searched about the airflow in these cases. I'll take that into consideration. On the other hand, upon further research, I think that the airflow problem with the Phanteks cases (all Phanteks cases; not just the P400) can easily be solved by rearranging the fans. -

Really? Do you have any links about the terrible airflow? -

I had to recheck again. I noticed that the 509 is not a mid tower. It does have good design. I do like it. Unfortunately, it's not a mid tower.
