  1. Whole drives. No noticeable performance impact for me, and I've rebuilt all my systems to Windows 10 1511 which allows for XTS-AES 256 bit encryption. Unless someone has the recovery keys, I'd be confident that it's strong enough that if my house got broken into, no-one would get at my data.
  2. I have no issues using Bitlocker for everything I do :-)
  3. Actually I just remembered. It's because the 4 SFP ports on the front are only 1gbps and that's why we never got link. Luckily, the switches we had were from a project that bought them by mistake and they came with the 10gb SFP+ expansion modules in separate boxes which are quite expensive - so probably not the best solution for you unless you can get the daughtercard quite cheap. It would be more cost effective for you to grab a Dell N3024 especially if you want to use LAG. There are much cheaper switches out there though like the Quanta Computer gear.
  4. Before you buy anything though - let me get back to the office tomorrow and work out what we did- because I remember having difficulty getting link on the SFP+ ports and forgot how we got around it!
  5. Yup FTOS (the OS on these switches) support LAG by setting up a port channel. Two SFP+ passive twinax cables and 2 10gb SFP cards should get you going (all much cheaper on ebay)
  6. I use these badboys in my lab. Really easy to configure too. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xdell+s5.TRS0&_nkw=dell+s55&_sacat=0
  7. As a technical architect that's been in the game for 12 years now - I agree that some of the info / guidance / idea's are way off with the enterprise / server video content ideas - but I still heavily enjoy watching them without getting stressed out. They are still entertaining none the less and I don't find Linus's attitude poor at all. All I would say is probably chuck a big bold disclaimer on these vids to say to viewers "come to the forums for advice before committing to any ideas / inspiration!"
  8. Well the only downside to splitting is that you have to sell everything which can also be difficult especially with things like cases. If you split I'd expect you'd claw back $1500 minimum. The only solution that's a true winner is if you find someone that appreciates the custom work you have done and want's the rig! Good luck whatever you try and do! :-)
  9. You also need to remember memory bandwidth and the extra threads from the 2011-v3 series will benefit you immensely depending what you intend to do with virtualized workloads.
  10. Depends how long your idea of quite a while is and what your budget is! I'm in the process of building a new rig based around the same gear Linus used for the 7 gamers 1 CPU video but with less powerful Xeon's to replace my current EVGA SR-2 x5690 rig which has served me since 2011. Depends how many VM's you are running really - I use about 20 VM's on Hyper-V at the moment.
  11. Can't give you a magic solution I'm afraid - just sounds like an investment combined with poor timing / decision making. And you are forgetting now that the appeal for the 2011-v3 series is much less with the full release of the 1151 offerings and upcoming Broadwell-E stuff, it has a serious impact on the resale value of your gear. The 5820K was before DDR4 was mainstream, and even then some people still go with 4790K DDR3 rigs as it offers better single core performance over the 5820K. Ebay sounds like your only solution but not to sound offensive - you come across as young so be very very careful with ebay and prepare for some headaches with people.
  12. Think of it like a car you've bought brand new out of the factory. The second you've purchased it - you've lost thousands in resale value. That's just how it goes. You won't be able to get anywhere near the cost value for it. And ebay for parts can be a nightmare - people claiming they don't work ect and Paypal battles - I would never even consider it with enthusiast gear. Better safe than sorry rather than losing out on your investment.
  13. Not enough info to go on really. What's your max budget, intended purpose for the machine and where are you intending to buy the components from :-)
  14. The plasti dipping is a custom mod that was done to suit your taste.... practically worthless to someone else really. I'd say the resale value of your rig is anywhere between $1350 and $1650.
  15. Social media probably best bet in the first place or anyone within a local gaming community you may have contacts with. Selling on things like ebay and craiglist would be far too risky / stressful in my opinion. Also money is relative to what you paid. If you want to sell the rig as a complete unit you will probably end up worse off than breaking it down and selling the components.
  16. The 8320 works very differently. The 860K is basically the A10 7850K without the GPU but with all the shitty thermal throttling behavior left inside it. It's known for being a right pain when it comes to thermals, and for motherboards overvolting the hell out of it on stock. Talked about here too : http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2450573
  17. No it won't?! Want me to do a fraps video on the rig here to show you? Edit - actually the only utility that showed throttling happening was AMD's own overdrive utility. CPU-Z and the like didn't register it at all.
  18. The frequency won't show as changing when it throttles back on these at all, you will just see significant performance decrease....
  19. Also youtube guide for you - skip to 8:42
  20. Yup it fits without issue - you will need OSX Install media though to rebuild.
  21. 70c is the thermal throttle point on this CPU. You need to get that figured out. On mine it was a case of changing the cooler out and taking control of the vcore manually and disabling all the load line calibration nonsense. It runs a budget Gigabyte mobo and was giving me grief, it's a Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD.
  22. I've got this CPU on a rig here with me right now - it's a pain in the arse. Check your thermal margin isn't being hit. It's very much hit and miss with this GPU I've found.
