  1. Native chromecast apps download data directly to chromecast, but when mirroring devices (which is the only way computers work with chromecast afaik) the computer downloads from WAN then rebroadcasts a full HD stream over LAN to chromecast. WAN probably needs to be connected but im pretty sure its the LAN throughput thats too much for OPs router.
  2. It's possible that casting to your chromecast in that way is too much for your local network, regardless of the speed of your Internet connection. You might need to upgrade your wifi AP/router. If the newscast stream is playing in the browser on your computer and you're then casting that browser window to your tv, you're forcing the router to throughput 2-3 times the data of the stream itself or more. That kind of throughput can crash a cheap wifi router (or the modem/router combo from your isp if that's what you're using.) The router receives the Internet stream and passes it to your computer, then your computer sends a stream/video of your browser back through the router to the chromecast at full 720 or 1080p. The native android chromecast apps don't have that problem because the chromecast gets the stream directly, but when you're mirroring something from computer-to-chromecast on top of downloading, the workload goes way up
  3. Ethernet is unaffected. Solid 40 mbps down/ 10 up. Wifi starts around 8 down dropping to 1-2 mbps but still 10mbps up
  4. The new isp gave us an arris cable modem. The Asus n56u handles the routing/wifi AP The old isp was crap, but the asus was fine with high bandwidth local LAN throughput over wifi. Now doesn't seem to be stable with a higher speed WAN.
  5. what are you streaming? mirroring desktop? locally stored movies/tv ? youtube or other online sources?
  6. Since switching ISPs (Bell adsl 2mbps to Cogeco 40/10mbps), wifi connection has slowed right down a couple of times and or crashed. I'm looking for suggestions on what is overloading the router. NAT ? IPtables ? Situation overview: RT-N56 has been rock solid for 1+ years. Even better with Padavan for ~1 year. No interference issues etc.. firmware 3.4.3.9-099 Local high-throughput network speeds have not been an issue (file transfers, plex-to-chromecast2, etc..) Ethernet connection to WIN10 computer is unaffected. Router reset resolves issue short term It's a new problem, so I'm not 100% clear on the circumstances but it's happened twice watching/loading youtube. Two different devices triggered the youtube problem. Nexus 7 2nd gen on youtube, and chromecast2 streaming youtube. Suggestions elsewhere for similar issues included changing hardware NAT/routing to 'Offload tcp/udp for lan/wan' from the default 'Offload tcp for lan/wan' upping netfilter maximum connection from default ~16000 to 32768 changing NAT type from default linux hybrid to Full Cone NAT. .. which sort of seem logical but also sort of throwing darts. I've reset the router to default settings then re-input my basic network info (which I hadn't done since leaving Bell) Waiting to see if the issue resolves, but not hopeful. I hope someone here has better networking understanding and can suggest some settings/tweaks that might keep the wifi side from crapping the bed
  7. I wouldn't think so either but someone commented on the poor ambient temperature tolerance of the cx series.. Ha. Anyway, neither here nor there. Definitely a faulty unit. And didn't appear to take any other hardware with it. Im more curious if corsair will allow a change of model.
  8. Right. 500M. Running an i5 4690k stock cooler, 750ti, ssd and hdd. Nothing crazy. Although the case is fractal core 1100 and the psu is top mounted with fan facing downwards, so maybe it overheated despite not being under huge load
  9. CX550M blew up during a pretty light gaming session. It was too late to call corsair today but it's only a couple months old so i expect ill be able to rma no problem. Will corsair only exchange like-for-like or can i upgrade to something more reliable. Or do they offer refunds? I was happy with the cx430 I already had, but apparently I should have done some more research
  10. When disk utility finds an error it can't fix, it just means the error is in the OS system files, and disk utility isn't powerful enough to fix it. This means you need to do a complete erase and install instead of just a reinstall. No big deal though. Could be something as simple as a bad update. The fact that the computer still boots into the OS is best case scenario. Because you have a chance to back up her home folder. Either using time machine if possible or drag and drop /Users/* Then you go into recovery (image 2) use disk utility to erase the partition then download/install fresh copy of OSX and bobs your uncle. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204904
  11. Try booting while holding command, option, P and R all at the same time until you hear the startup chime play twice. That resets the video settings. Then try booting while holding just the shift key to go into safe boot. Safe boot will take longer to start up because it does a disk check first. Also youll see scrolling artifacts on the screen but that's expected. If it doesn't seem any better though definitely give Applecare a call. There was a repair extension program for some 2011-12 macbooks. It was a very specific but fairly widespread failure of some solder joints on the gpu. If your mac fits the criteria you may be in for a free repair. https://www.apple.com/ca/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
  12. Hrm. There's gotta be some process hanging /crashing and your CPU goes to 100%. Have you reinstalled audio drivers? Sucks that it takes 2hours.
  13. Maybe something up with the usb bus not reinitializing properly? Anything usb power related in your bios?
  14. Always happen with the same video? Bad/corrupted rips used to cause that sort of thing back in the day for me. Different players would sometimes respond better. . Like vlc would crash but mpc would just blip and carry on
