    Jon Trollston got a reaction from Tedster in Dumb Question But Can I Use Regular Hardware for a Server?
    A server is just a computer that other computers connect to. The only difference between normal hardware and server hardware is that server hardware is generally lower power, more power efficient and is made to run 24/7. If you're just making a home server though, you can use any hardware.

    The Z170 WS is the better board. Higher quality, better power delivery, ATX, and 4-way SLI.

    BTW, if someone tells you a motherboard gives you a higher frame rate, disown them.

    You'll have to buy second hand. LGA 1155 is discontinued. Your only chance to find one is to go on ebay and see if anyone is selling one that's left over stock or something of the sort unfortunately.

    Yeah not possible, you could get a TKL or a 60% keyboard if you want something small

    but nothing will have that layout, they are made specifically to fit that specific laptop and nothing else

    That is the strangest thing i have ever seen

    why not just bind movement to IJKL and then you can use any normal keyboard

    Can't help you with that unfortunately. If you really like it that much, you can just hook up your laptop to and external monitor and just use it as a keyboard. Otherwise, if you're feeling super adventurous, you could take the keyboard off an old lapop, make yourself a custom circuit if you need to and make it into a standard usb keyboard.

    Hm, let's see, 1366-775=591
    591 =/= 0
    Therefore 1366 is different from 775

    In order to utilise ECC memory, you will need xeons. The best gpu's you can get for adobe and stuff like that are the high end quadros. If you make it fast enough, you can just queue up videos to automatically render right after the other. A 4790k may be slow. You could try going for a dual xeon setup depending on your budget.

    Recommendations: Don't stream from this as well. If you go the xeon route with ECC memory etc. you can go for a server motherboard that has a raid controller inbuilt. Also, windows 7 may create issues, look into using Windows Server 2012 r2 (will explain why down below). There is no sense in buying a rackmount case, just get a large case like the Enthoo Pro or something. Rackmount only saves space if you have a metric shitload of stuff that needs to be in the same area.

    Server 2012 R2: If you go this route, you can set up multiple vm's of windows 7 or whatever you like and have your video editing program run on that. If you do that, that means that you could actually render multiple things simultaneously and even have each person remotely connect and work on their own project. For that to work though, you would want at least 32 gigs or 64 gigs of ram.;

    i dont recommend going with random rams for skylake, ive seen atleast 2 or 3 cases of skylake system not posting because of ram incompatibility
    i recommend getting the corsair vengeance LPX or kingston hyperX fury rams, those are the ones ive seen the most with skylake system

    Why would they do that? Intel makes cpu's with >4 cores too. Not to mention that intel has hyperthreading which is exclusive and as such, anything more than a dual core + hyperthreading would be able to use more than 4 threads. I think that the 4 thread limitation is mainly due to games being gpu bound rather than cpu bound and as such, enabling more cores/threads would achieve almost nothing.

    No, it helps with highly varied workloads. If your parallelized workload just uses the same ALUs across all 4 main threads and the hyperthreads, you gain no extra performance. Depending on your program hierarchy and how often threads are generated, you may in fact lose performance to a significant degree.

    I would honestly go for some second hand parts considering how low of a budget you have. The gpu, psu and case especially aren't worth buying at all imo.
