to max fps in games you'll be looking at 1080p but there are some 1440p monitors which are getting up there in speed and allow more precise (shorter physical distance between) pixel to pixel changes if you can maintain 240hz which you likely won't achieve with the 6600xt but might get with a 4070 (noone knows how the 4000 series will perform yet)

Odyssey G7 should go for around $700-750 for 1440p 240hz

    https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/odyssey-g7-lc32g75t

Viewsonic Elite also does really well at 1080p 240hz usually around $600

Thank you, I think  the viewsonic monitors are a great fit for me. You guys gave me great recommendations here, really appreciate it!

If you are looking for 1080p I would recommend this monitor: Viewsonic XG2431 the only downside is the bad osd functions

Here is a review of it from Optimum Tech:

If you are looking for 1440p I would recommend this monitor: ASUS PG279QM also the Samsung Odyssey G7 is a great option

Here is a review of them from Hardware Unboxed:

Thanks, the Viewsonic looks like a great option. It's under budget too!

yea, like the 80 hz monitoe my dad had, 15 years ago, and that was because the drivers didnt support it out of the box. Now the drivers and windows think its normal so you dont need it

I don't want to bore you with all the details, but trust me when I say every piece of hardware on your pc has a driver and needs a driver. My AOC monitor is about 5 years old so it's pretty modern. It needed a proprietary driver because it didn't work properly with the generic windows driver. The screen was always stuck in 400 x 600 resolution. Anyway I don't want to get stuck with something like that again.

  4. Would like to get some good recommendations for a 240hz e-sports gaming monitor. Budget around $500-$800. I'm looking for something with 1ms response time. I play games like Overwatch and COD mostly. My GPU is an RX 6600 TX and I'm planning to change to the next RTX series when they are released. Maybe an RTX 4070. Thank you for your input.

Edit: Also prefer a good brand, my last monitor was an AOC that gave me all kinds of problems because it's driver was never updated correctly.

  5. Budget (including currency): 2-3.5k

    Country: US.

Looking to get a good workhorse laptop for Ubuntu. Would like something like what Lenovo offers with a dock that can connect for multiple monitors setup. Not sure what to get. I currently have  Clevo aka System76, but it's too bulky for me to commute with back and forth. I'm not interested in Mac even thought I know it's very good. I don't want to pay the Apple premium. I'm leaning toward ThinkPad X1 Carbon, but is there something better out there?

Threadripper is only good for heavily multicore workloads (i.e. *not* gaming). For gaming, even something like a 3600 would probably do better. Similarly, the 5950X is a really bad value unless you need to use 32 simultaneous threads (which you don't for gaming).

The best value for gaming right now would be an Intel 11400 or a Ryzen 5600X (assuming you can get it at MSRP). However, 6 core chips likely have a clock on their usefulness at this point, so something like an 11600/11700 or 5800X would make more sense for long term. None of those are great values right now, though. You're paying a lot more for those two extra cores. The best value overall (again, assuming MSRP) is the 5900X. Nothing else comes close in price to performance, and Intel doesn't even have anything that can complete. 12 core is a little overkill for gaming, though, but not completely. Some games will already scale to that, but you won't get full utilization probably on most games for a while.

Let me clarify. I'm looking for a workstation cpu that can handle gaming. That's why I was thinking of threadripper or 5950x. I don't really need all the extra pci stuff that threaderipper comes with or the headache of having to cool that thing. My i7 5960x was a great high end desktop cpu. I was able to overclock it to 4.6Ghz. I'm surprised just how much use I got out of it. I'm hoping the 5950x is similar and the extra core count would help, but I agree for the extra $$$ it's not worth it. Thank you for the input.

  7. I'm looking to replace my i7 5960x. Any ideas what would be a good replacement for it today?

I have an i7 8700k right now which sucks in my opinion compared to the 5960x, but I'm too lazy to rebuild the system so whatever... I'm looking to replace my system with something comparable to the i7 5960x. I was thinking Ryzen 9 5950x, but idk. Would a threadripper be better? Is the gaming performance so much worse on a threadripper?

  8. I was wondering if anyone would help me figure out how to overclock my amd rx 570/580 cards on a linux ubuntu 20.04 rig where I'm mining ethereum. I did a bios overclock on the cards a while ago using polaris. It's been such a long time I don't even remember how i did it, but I know that it's done. I use to mine on windows and I could use the graphics overclocking tools to overclock the memory, but on linux it's another story. I recently switched over to linux for the mining setup and I'm using nanominer, but I'm not getting the same hash rate like I was able to get on windows. I appreciate any help with this. Preferably I would like to avoid doing any overclocking that requires altering the bios. If there's a software I can use instead please let me know. For example there's an easy to use software called GreenWithEnvy that lets you do simple overclocking for nvidia cards. Is there something like this for AMD cards in linux? If not, please link me some resources on how to overclock amd cards in linux/ubuntu, thank you guys!

i am thinking of getting of getting a new phone but confused between the above mentioned phones. Can anyone please help which of the phone would be better for long term use? I like pixel but i've heard that the battery life is pretty bad. The only good thing about s10 lite is its 4500mah battery and 45w charging. One more thing that has been bothering me is that i can only get a renewed s10+ at that price and if i should go for it. I do not play games or use my phone heavily. I just want a phone with good camera and battery life. I was also thinking about oneplus 7t and 7pro (both $500) but i dont like their display and camera. Can anyone help me with their suggestions ?

I had nothing but Samsung phones before I switched to Pixel. In my experience the Samsung phones were awful over the long term. They have lots of  buggy software that Samsung forces you to have on there. Also, they ran into trouble trying to "make things better" and you can read it here. What I like about the Pixel is that it's entirely designed to give the best Android experience in terms of user experience with software and features. Google assistant is very helpful in so many ways compared to Samsung's Bixby - what a failure that is. I switched to Pixel 3 last year and it's been a world of difference. About battery life on the Pixel I don't know the exact numbers, but I've never had an issue with it especially since all phones are using the fast charging technology anyway. It takes like 30 min to get 75% charge on the phone.

    It's already on balanced.

It's possible the bios update changed some of your default settings. I don't remember the exact setting, but there is a bios option that basically makes the cpu run at full even if it's idle. It has to do with intel's P-state and C-state settings. You'll have to search through the bios to find it and change it.

    How about video editing?

Going from dual to quad nearly doubles the available memory bandwidth which is great, but you won't see much of an impact in video editing or gaming. If you have cash to burn go for it, but the benefit is going to be so small that I wouldn't suggest you pay extra for it.

Heya all. Hope yall are keeping safe.  I was wondering whether 32gb of ram is better to be put in dual channel or quad channel? If so, what makes the respective choice better? Also does anyone know if there are any good prices on 32gb of ram?

Basically dual/quad channel allows data to flow faster between the RAM and CPU. You can read the wiki for more details. If you have 4 sticks of ram and the option is either dual or quad channel than go for quad since you will be optimizing the full potential of the configuration. Ultimately it comes down to your use case. If your looking at a gaming system to just play games on and surf the web it won't make much of an impact to performance which one you use. I have a HEDT with quad channel and a gaming rig with dual channel. I have 4 sticks of ram in both now, but I've tried the gaming rig with just 2x8gb sticks to use the dual channel and I didn't notice any difference in games.

For that kind of budget, I'd go used/refurb. I'd probably look at a used Thinkpad P51.

I believe the P51 is available with a range of 7th gen i7/xeons, quadros, 2 NVME drives, 1 2.5" drive, and up to 64gb of DDR4 (as well as the usual perks you expect from a Thinkpad).

I found some good options for that on ebay with a nice 7820hq too. Thanks for the help!

  14. Hi, everyone. I need some help picking out the right laptop. I need something that will be a workstation. I'm looking at the 600-900 range. Obviously the cheaper option would be best. It needs to be able to handle a lot of chrome tabs like 50 or more while running things like Adobe PDF, MS Word, Excel, and some other background tasks. I found this IdeaPad, but I'm not sure about the Core i5-1035G1. The other option I found for myself was this HP ProBook 455 and it has a Ryzen 7 4700U which should offer more bang for buck. Which would you pick and do you know if there's anything out there that would be a better option? I need the system to have 16gb RAM (ddr3 is fine too) with at least 512GB ssd/nvme. It doesn't have to be brand new either. I'm happy to buy used/refurbished as long as the specs are good, but it's hard to find an old laptop that can handle the software I'm using. Right now I have an old MSI MS-16GH and it's starting to show it's age. Most of the time the CPU is at 50-70% when working on it and there is noticeable delays with software loading/freezing.

Any good recommendation of a good replacement for chrome?

Firefox, Opera gx, torch, two edge are out. And the 2 IE too. They simply do not cut it.

Try either Chromium or Brave 1.0. Brave is a new privacy focused browser built on the Chromium open source project (not to be confused with Google Chrome). Or you could always old school it and try NetScape Navigator LOL.

I have been recently hearing this sort of static, crackling sound coming from my psu (at least I think it is my psu). I have had a SeaSonic PRIME Ultra Titanium 850 W 80+ psu for around a year now it just started making those noises. For reference, I run a 9900k, 32gb of ram, 2080ti, 2 nvme m.2 drives, a 360mm aio, and 4 nfa-12x25 fans. This video shows it during idle conditions, it flares up especially during heavy workloads like gaming. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and why it has started happening after almost a year of this not happening?

Check the cord, I've had that noise happen to me before too. Turned out the cord wasn't making a stable connection so that noise was actually the electricity barely making contact with the pins. Unplug it make sure everything is clean. If you still hear that noise try putting some pressure on the cord where it connects to the PSU and see if the noise stops. If it does stop I would suggest you replace the power cord.

Have 16gb ram installed. games constantly crash saying memory issue. I looked at task manager and said 5gb ram available, even though I have 16 ... I dont know what to do.

check that the memory is securely in the slot if you were messing around with them earlier, otherwise, they might be dead. To test this try removing the ram sticks and only boot with one at a time. If one of them is dead you won't be able to boot.

Odds are this isn't what it seems. Wikipedia is already under the complete control of a small group of top level admins, this just let's them prevent any dissent. Don't let the press-release fool you into thinking this about improving the place.

This is just the Emperor disbanding the Senate.

Looks more like a power grab to me too. I hope this will be the final nail in Wiki's coffin. Wiki is full of shady information. I stopped trusting them a long time ago.
