  1. linux fits those categories, to run an ark server, you would need a virtual system running windows to achieve it but everything else can run on linux ubuntu server might fit your needs... but their are other distros that you might like, it depends on how they do with the work loads you intend to do try a couple of different distros out and see what one fits your needs the best
  2. i have a awesome religious thing i made up that has linus and luke look like gods, i'm going to make a image to go with it and post it here sometime later, thats if i remember to do that
  3. After seeing Haunted Hardware, i thought that the LTT community would have Haunted Hardware stories of their own (or a friend, family member etc.) that could be interesting for everyone else to see and read. your story has to meet these three criteria (otherwise it's just a problem that you fixed and thats boring): does it persist between multiple opereating system installs? has this system (or hardware) had it since it's first assembly (or when you got it from someone) or when you changed something about it's configuration (adding a extra card etc.)? and last off, is it useful or annoying? this is an example of a story that meets the criteria and has happened to me: i had a system that would not play star wars jedi knight jedi academy, no matter what i did, the game would not launch, just to be sure i installed it in my other system and it worked fine. even after many hardware changes (extra RAM, Better GPU, faster HDD etc.), opereating system reinstalls and driver installs and reinstalls, the problem persisted no matter what i did. even to this day the system still refuses to play the game and gives the same error. i have googled it and no-one else has had this problem and it's not documented anywhere online. it's had this ever since it was first put together, it's annoying as it's my main winxp gaming system and i play winxp games on it as some games perform better on the OS they were developed on. let's hear your story! also don't give ways to fix the problem, as the individual might not want help fixing the problem as they might of given up or tried everything they can to fix it
  4. it should be "But will it run the Witcher 3's Nvidia hair works option?" it f**king destroys GPU's with it on!
  5. untrue! i watch cartoons every day, i still watch things like PowerPuff girls, adventure time, rick and morty and so much more! thats complete Bulls**t wait let me call him...
  6. download the latest version of drivers from the manufactures website and see if the problems is still their, most likely the the problem has been fixed in an update, most problems get fixed just by updating your software and drivers
  7. maxwell did have a ARM chip in it but architecture change, to save cost, nvidia prob got the GPU unit to do process itself it doesn't need much of a code change and it works the same cost saving and people download the code change anyways so there's no problems...
  8. you mean minecraft server.... but i will continue with this joke In in the ring we have a java program that takes more RAM than the game it is hosting, we have the Minecraft server java application! (crowd roar) and this other corner, we have a browser that destroys 4GB RAM computers, it's google chrome! (crowd roar) (the contestants go into the middle of the ring) Ring master: Alright, i want a good clean fight for the RAM, no overwriting each other, no corrupting each other memorys space etc., alright let's get this over with, go to your corners! (the contestants go back to their corners) (bell sounds, ding...) let the fight begin......
  9. 1. simple to do 2. a 4-6 core system with about 16-32GB ram should fit that need 3. lucky, and you get 300 down and up with 5 ping?!?!?! not even my work has that speeds! a 4-6 core system would handle your needs, also consider hyper-threading as well as that can really help with processing loads of small workloads, most game server hosting software works this way to try and take advantage of HT, doesn't run very well on non-HT systems though (why would it?) anyways, buying new equipment with this specs would cost around 2000-2500 USD brand new, used would fetch around 500-1000 USD and you might get some more advanced features like ECC memory and quad port 10-gigabit network cards, (we have a system at work that has 4 of them, but it's the main virtual system hoster and these systems include things like a mail server and things like that that need loads of bandwidth) EDIT: fixed some infomation errors
  10. info i found intresting hmm, ah i got one! and it's true! everything was better in the 90s as The Last Leg shows
  11. all hail the 24/7 god of operation! Quod natum est et sanatum, ut nostra errata haredware et a peccatis et software veniam et sanctificata est Lux sancta nos NVIDIA fanboyisem cable mod RBG dolor habena linus ur farther sanctus Lucas filius noster, et electrica spiritum sanctum. amen use google translate to translate this EDIT: i have put it through google translate and it got it wrong, so here's the original english version: All hail the 24/7 god of operation, may all computer hardware die in his holy eternal name: linus. As many have died in his hands doing the will he has set for them. Also hail the son of our lord linus, Luke the pokemon blue god and master. As he has healed our haredware and software sins and mistakes by forgiving them may their holy nvidia fanboyisem lead us to the holy light that is the Cable mod RBG lighting strip linus the holy farther, luke our son, and their electrical holy spirit. amen
  12. cinebench is like getting a cpu to do 1 + 1 compared to universal sandbox 2 i would love to see how "ThreadRipper" handles it (i wonder if surfer guy came up with the name, sounds like some one like that did, surfer dude: hey man, i have a awesome name for your product man... AMD: what is it? surfer dude: ThreadRipper man! AMD: F**k that sounds awesome! )
  13. nvidia prob released them in purpose to generate hype, as thats a excellent way of showing people the progress of a product without showing numbers, specs and how it performs it's a tactic that doesn't hurt anyone and enhances hype of a product so more people buy it
  14. use linus's preferred method to try and stop the thieves: zip-ties! tie them to the wall port and your problem should be solved (unless people cut the tie off, then get metal ones (if they exist))
  15. it's different for each country i think the way it works in australia is, "if you have had a piece of media that you have owned for a certain amount of time you may back up it's contents if desired" i don't know who said or came up with the quote, but i know it's from our government anyways, he prob uses things like netflix, rips personal media, watches from personal media etc. as with many people who do the same thing
  16. your plan gets canceled and you will have to talk to your ISP about reactivating it it's a good idea to get a plan without many restrictions my old ISP (before switching to a new because work needed offsite backup and i was the only admin at the time, and work would pay for it) allowed me to do this stuff because they had nothing against it, but the one before that, hated it when i hosted a server for friends for games, sometimes cutting my internet for a week, eventually i had enough and switched to a better one
  17. yea this is common in a apartment building if you can change the SSID to something unique and change the channels that the wifi is using this usually goes away e.g Wifi name: JTLSoundWifi_MAIN a free app for android devices allows you to see what channels are being used, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en thats if you have your own router, if you can't change the settings of it because it's against your rent agreement or something then thats something you have to talk about with your building manager/owner just don't annoy him, thats how me and sam got kicked out of our old house before moving to our new one
  18. this topic is being posted about using the Raspberry pi as a NAS is happening to often hey @Windspeed36 can we have a dedicated post about the raspberry pi and its server/NAS capabilities for the Servers and NAS sub-forum as this is getting annoying with people asking if it's possible and what it can do.... thanks for understanding anyways, yes it can be used for a simple NAS, many tutorials exist on how to do this e.g http://www.techradar.com/how-to/computing/how-to-build-your-own-raspberry-pi-nas-1315968 it's so simple, even making a sandwich is complicated compared to this....
  19. the system is haunted by a type of ghost called: broken chipset controller rare to see in the wild and some say there is only 1-200 in the wild as of 2016 anyways, the chipset controller is what allows the system to communicate with outside devices (things like usb) and is the boot controller as well, even if you installed the chip drivers, your problem won't go away, it's broken on a hardware level
  20. the bigest problem with this is kids getting a mac so many office's use windows as the main OS so they can control what the system remotely and stuff like that because that gen has nevered used windows, they will be confused and will try their hardest to get a mac for their work this is happening more and more, we just had about 12 new employees (teens), and they all went up to me and said: Teens (imanage a hormonal teen voice): uhh sir? we want macs for our work computers... (i turn around) me (annoyed): first off, i'm a girl. second, no you will not be getting macs, because 1 they don't work with our systems and thats something i don't want to work with, 2 i hate the damn things, so put up with your windows system, if you want help get windows 10 for dummies, that will teach you how to use a REAL computer. not a mac, because they aren't computers, just overpriced systems that doesn't work after 2 years because apple wants you to buy their hardware as much as you can. was i harsh? yes, but i had a bad day that day and really didn't want to deal with something like that...
  21. 1. they don't give a s**t about tech, only that it allows them to do things (thats why so many teens have an iPhone, so many parents are prob broke because they bought one for their teen because they "need" one), it's sad to see kids not interested on how computers evolved, i wasn't like that as a child, i wanted to learn how computers worked and what were they like earlier... 2. school's are starting to use educational computers (raspberry pi) to teach kids how computers work, hopefully latter generations will appreciate technology and how it works when i get (or have) a kid with sam, i will be teaching it how computers work at a early age so it sticks (and things like math and spelling so it can do better in school(so it doesn't turn out like me, unable to spell most words and unable to do some maths equations))
  22. Again another reason not to use facebook.... honestly once this gets onto local news facebook will be in trouble and services like twitter will have a LOT more users
  23. and thats why i don't use facebook, to much spying..... although it's better than win10's spying....
  24. budget, may not require a more powerful GPU for his needs etc. not everything is about going overkill.....
