Me too, getting too popular in the industry and some applications like Unity.

I can't believe this with a straight face. While iOS development might have a higher median salary, it's also limiting in that if you don't have very many skillsets, you're isolating yourself to the iOS environment. If you're trying to make a career out of this, I'd argue web development has much more potential.

The other hiccup is you need an Apple computer to do iOS work, so if you want to do anything on the side as a hobby with iOS, you need a Mac. I guess on the flipside, you could do web development easily on a Mac too.

Either way, I would stick with web development. There's a much wider market for it.

I run a Synology DS416 that ticks off every box you mention. The one thing I'm not 100% sure on is the 4k HDR content. I know for plex I have to encode my content (only 1080 stuff fwiw) in a format my Apple TV will play natively because the processor can't keep up with transcoding content during playback. If there's a similar method for 4k content then you'll probably be fine.

It's pretty small, very quiet, and packed with options. I'd definitely purchase it again if I had to do it all over. Maybe 4 bays is overkill, but sometimes I don't think about that.

The major web browsers no longer support Java applets (good riddance to NPAPI and ActiveX plugins). Like others have said, you really should be keeping with the times, especially for things related to your field of work. Unless you're using an older web browser version, you shouldn't even be able to use Java applets now.

I came through school relatively recently using Java. Specifically Enterprise Java towards the end focused on web applications (I only mention this to point out that you can do more than android/local machine applications). It's not as prevalent in the industry where I live (compared to .Net) but there are still jobs around, and imo the syntax taught is secondary to the rest of the education. I work as a pseudo full stack developer doing .Net MVC primarily and I still apply most of my education to what I do. The biggest change for me was typing "using" rather than "import"

However I will say that it was explained to us, in no uncertain circumstances, that we should just pretend Java applets didn't exist.

I know this whole thing is kind of why code camps around my area don't get accredited. They want to be able to modify their curriculum. I went through school using Java, and I've not written a line of Java professionally. It really doesn't bother me. There was so much more to my education than a single language.

    Just my 1.5 cents.

Note that ToShortDateString is culture specific so it won't format the same for everyone. For example, ToShortDateString uses a "yyyy-MM-dd" format for me.
    DateTime.Now.ToString("yyyy-MM-dd") == DateTime.Now.ToShortDateString() // true for me

Excellent point. It didn't matter for my purposes, but I could see this being an issue in certain situations and definitely worth a mention.

Knowing Javascript could save your job one day, I didn't doubt that. My actual point, however, was that using Javascript "because everyone does it" and/or "because it's frontend" is not the best idea you could have.

typos aside it is what makes the difference between a programmer and a good programmer. It's what let me stand out in my college classes because I spend the time to learn.

we had a project in which we had to make a team management app, web based in html and php. Most of my class ended up with about 80 files where as I had 3.

first page was the view that displayed the different sections, second was a php file that did all the processing and the third was a database class to send pro queries too.

where as the rest of my glass had a page or each section that got sent to a different script then onto another end page.

Not really their fault we had a teacher that was on strike 98% of the time and then no replacement. I was just lucky enough to have took my own time to learn php.

get a "4k" ultrawide a 3860x1440, basically you get an inbetween that is really good for working and nice for gaming, 4K gaming is still pretty stupid even a single 1080 cant handle 60fps locked on AAA titles, yet so yea

for developing software, you'll want atleast 2 monitors from my experience
most people have 1 vertical monitor and 1 horizontal, and i'd recommend either 3440x1440 or 2x 2560x1440

The differences between consoles and PCs are becoming so nuanced I'm not sure for how much longer we'll be able to talk about them as two different "markets". Especially as more and more games go cross platform for their online multiplayer components.

I do agree with you though, I don't think this will have any long term effect on the PC market. It is, after all, still a console. We PC enthusiasts know what that means.

On a side note, I think the hype train is full steam ahead on this one. I am personally inclined to believe the hardware will disappoint when it finally arrives. I've been wrong before though.

I totally agree with you! I think that it is very good for everybody if the Console vs. PC thing subsides, but at the end of the day I will always like PC's. But yeah, This one will probably be a bit too over priced or lacking in performance and flop.

Nope, remember how people accepted the PS3 back in 2006? People found it to be way too expensive for a console ($600) which was why the 360 had an early success like the PS4 as it was cheaper than the counterpart.
