  1. Tbh it really depends. In my old job they did small adverts and movies and upgraded to a a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema, but BlackMagic also make much higher end cameras. Mostly as it was going on TV or the web, they'd record in 2.5k and scale down to 1080p. One of my friends does more high end shoots and used to swear by his Panasonic GH5 for its small size and 4k30 support. Not sure what he's upgraded to now. These links might help with some of the actual specs: 2019: https://www.indiewire.com/2018/11/cameras-lens-2019-oscar-contenders-best-cinematography-1202019782/ 2020: https://www.indiewire.com/2019/11/cameras-lens-2020-oscar-contenders-best-cinematography-1202187839/ Just a bit of anecdotal stuff, when I have been to the cinema in the past (can't now for obvious reasons) they used to advertise that they used a Sony 4k projector, meaning that the movie must have been in 4k. Most movies are also shot at 24fps (with notable exceptions such as the Hobbit which was shot at 48fps which split the community).
  2. Ooh yes good point, I always forget that. They seem to do ok with battery even at full tilt too? Probably because they only consume 100W max with a 99W/hr battery - so even at full tilt it's ~1 hour (if napkin math is correct )
  3. Honestly, it just does its thing and I have had 0 problems with it. I hope my next laptop will last this long tbh
  4. Main rig is a 6600k + 16GB DDR4 + 1070 so about 2015 ish - 4 or 5 years? My laptop that got me through uni is a 2013 MBP, so coming up on 6 or 7 years? Hoping to upgrade my desktop asap, the MacBook has soldiered on and am very happy with it, not really sure when I need/want to upgrade really
  5. Was in a kinda similar situation to you, and the only laptops that stood out to me were: 16" MBP (Apple Silicon refresh looms as close as today though) 15" XPS 15" Razer Blade/17" Blade Pro (but reliability and warranty scare me) 15" HP Z Book Display wise, the MBP, XPS and Z Book are (probably) better than the Razers (although I think the Razers are pretty good). In my experience, Apple always has really good displays out the box, especially for colour calibration. GPU wise, the Razers and HP are a lot better (with 20XX graphics cards) but for performance per watt, the XPS and MBP do really well, meaning better battery life. The 5600M in the MBP is apparently very good, especially for only drawing ~50W. Port wise I think all of these have Thunderbolt/USB C but the Razers and HP will not be able to charge enough through the connector due to it's 100W limit. This is where the XPS and MBP excel. It's just a toss up between charging on both sides vs a much beefier GPU. Personally, I'm waiting for the Apple announcement today and hoping for a final 10th Gen Intel refresh (or a really interesting Apple Silicon product). Pair that with the new-ish 5600M GPU (that performs really well), and you've got quite a powerful notebook that has all the features you want (plus you can get AppleCare+ so if you smash any part of the laptop you get a full replacement).
  6. Wait until later today, after the Apple event - they might announce a new ARM Mac mini which would work well for you - either the older computer becomes cheaper or you get a faster Mac (or a nice iMac comes out). Since you're using Logic, it's an Apple app so it'll run well on their hardware. The current Mac mini runs 8th gen Intel processors and only received a change in March this year with doubled base storage. It's by far the most neglected Mac. The most up to date desktop is only the 27" iMac (the 21.5 wasn't updated - there might be a 23" on the horizon for next year), which is quite a good computer for the money, just depends whether you want/need a 5k display. If you need a bit more power but are on a tight budget (and don't mind a massive boi), try looking at cheap Mac Pros on eBay. The 4,1 and 5,1 are pretty cheap and can come with some powerful Xeons. The 6,1 (trashcan) is also quite cheap atm as the GPUs are quite dated, but if you're only looking for CPU, you can pick one up with a 6 core E5 for quite cheap used. It has the benefits of small form factor, easily upgradeable RAM (with 4 slots) and even the potential for an upgraded CPU. Plus once it's finished its life, it looks pretty as an art piece (or trashcan!) Depending on your model of 2017 MBP, I don't think you'll see that much of an upgrade going to the Mac mini, especially if you have the 15" and are going to the i3 Mac mini - I'd definitely go for like a 27" iMac or an older Mac Pro. I'd also keep an eye on the Apple Refurb store.
  7. If you're still struggling with this, in macOS go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and you can set the Windows partition to be booted to by default. To select the OS you want to start with in the future, you can hold the option (⌥ ) key when starting up to select the boot disk (hold it before you see the Apple logo)
  8. I think that SSDs should be standard in all laptops nowadays as they are so much more durable and fast, making hardware which is considered pretty basic to be able to have considerable performance. I think for desktops, a SSD is really great for booting and most used programs. I personally have a SSD in my laptop and my desktop but there isn't a lot of space and would love to expand or be able to use RAID to make one 'big' hard drive.
