DBAN wont break your drive. It pretty much just formats it with department of security standards. Beware though. DBAN will format every re-writable drive it detects (hard drives, cds, etc). If you dont want to use dban it is best to look up a guide as it is a multi step process to remove write protection. Here is a good one
