Budget (including currency): $60 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Kids browser based school work, and some fairly basic Unity coding. Youtube at 720p is fine in this case. Linux is fine. These will not be used for gaming. Other details: I'd prefer some sort of thin client sized device that's low power. Would a 4GB RPi4 work fine for this? My kids already have gaming pcs in their rooms, but I really want to create a dedicated workspace for them with separate PC's. Even an old laptop would be fine with me, I just don't know how well older tech is holding up nowadays. Thanks!

Have you tried with the "faulty" gpu only? What wattage psu do you have? Edit- sorry the pics didn't load for me the first time. Idk how reasonable it would be for you to test the second card in the first pcie slot.

Lenovo 330s with ryzen 5 2500u. Won't power on, and is not charging. Charging indicator light not on. Tested the charger and it's correctly reading 20~v, so I think I can rule that out. I did all the typical troubleshooting. Lenovo button does nothing. Remove battery and cmos then power drain does nothing. Removed one at a time- ram, wifi card, ssd, peripheral, speakers, display. Nothing. I have a multimeter, but admittedly going in this deep is out of my wheelhouse. From what I can tell, there's a short somewhere (please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm learning.) Also, these two mosfets that are pictured are hot when it's connected to power. Does that mean anything to anyone? If there's any other info I can provide, let me know. Thanks in advance.

TechYesCity buys AliExpress Xeons all the time. They're fine. Costa Rica is where it was manufactured. Also, yes, that CPU is supported by your motherboard.

I also have an Intel/NVidia laptop (i5 7300hq and 1050ti) that runs most ps2 games flawlessly. The issues come up when software rendering is required (Ratchet and Clank; Gran Turismo 4) and the lower clock speed cant keep up with the demand. So, with the 2200G- I didn't over clock it, or the RAM (only DDR4 2400) I'm sure that wasn't doing me any flavors with my testing, though my software rendering runs were fine at native resolution. Yeah... Witcher 3 and Gears 5 didn't take too well to 2c/4t setup when it was stock, but stutter was eliminated at 4.9GHz. The Ryzen needed no OC to run stable though.

So, update. The i3 runs my emulators significantly better than the 2200g except for ps2, which is identical performance at 1080p. 4k may be different, but I'm using a 1050 ti for testing, so thats out of reach until I get a 1060/1070. The same is true for native PC games, though the frames seem more stable with the ryzen. I'll update when I get a new GPU.

I vaguely remember this issue from years ago. I never found a permanent fix to run a 750... We were able to get it working with some hoop jumping until the system was rebooted. We ended using an hd 7750 somehow with no issues. I don't know if it's the legacy issues or if it was PSU related. I'll see if my friend remembers what the problem was.

I figured. I planned to do that anyway... I just don't have a GPU available to test with. (Save a 1 gb hd 7770 I have as a decorative item.) I might just be able to get a baseline though. Thanks for the insight.

I'm wanting to make a dedicated emulation rig, and have both an i3 7350k and a ryzen 3 2200g with mobos (B350 and Z270) in storage. What would be better for emulation? The i3 OCs to 5 GHz, but I'm not sure what the Ryzen is capable of. I'm scouting for a cheap GTX 1060 right now to go with the build, so the iGPUs are irrelevant for me. Up-res PS2 and 3DS are my high priorities. Are emulators still single-thread heavy, or have they all moved to multi-thread back ends? Would the straight quad-core zen be a better option now? Thanks for the help!

Refurbished processors are fine most of the time. The rest of the PC will waste away while the CPU remains the only working part. Xeons especially.

Personally, I'd just see how that runs first with the i3. You can go up to i7-3770 with that, but the i5-3470 would pair better with your GPU. Extra 4 GB ram would help too. Also- I'm not sure on the heatsink, since I'm not positive what the stock one is rated for. The i5/i7 is higher wattage, so it may need something beefier. If all else fails, try it out and watch your temps.

GTA 5 stutters quite a bit on the g4400. They should pair nicely for most other titles though. I'd seriously recommend 4th gen i3 at least.

Last note, that Athlon 250 setup you have... it's going to choke on modern titles. My wife was using one up until 2014 or so, but when she shifted away from L4D2 to playing Fallout 4 and Tomb Raider, we moved to the i3 system.

Also, what's that gray ribbon cable in the middle? Serial? I'm sure you could remove that guy if you need the space...

Well, the newest game that is played on the machine is probably Gears of War 4, on Ultra around 35-40fps, on high 50-55fps.

That slim pc you have can fit a gtx 1050/1050ti, or gt 1030, so long as you get the low profile version. It comes with a special bracket for slim cases. Video card should be your first upgrade, and honestly, you can ride on that for a bit. I bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 with an i3 3220 and slapped an MSI 1050ti low-profile gpu in it. Runs everything fine, so long as you manage your expectations. Beyond that, another 4 GB ram, and an i5-3470 would be great upgrades.

OMG I had one of those Phenoms years ago... I remember unlocking a 4th core and getting like 3.3GHz... anyway, I also remember my GTX 760 being held back a bit, so I would recommend GTX 750ti/950/1050, or rx 460/560.

Lots of ways really. I know someone that sold his 7970 during the bitcoin thing a few years ago. The buyer already had the item for 3 or 4 days when the market crashed, and submitted to ebay that he was scammed. Even took a video of him "unboxing" the card to reveal a 6450 with a 7970 painted on it. eBay sided with the buyer.

I would... I sold my rx 470 for $385, and bought a gtx 1050ti for $100. Pocketed the rest for my Vega fund. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for doing that either. At this point, the only people paying those exuberant prices are miners, so you aren't directly screwing gamers over. Edit- Given that prices remain high after all this recent noise on cryptocurrency.

I just settled for an EVGA 1050ti for $100 and a baconator combo. I bought a refurb gtx 980 from Microcenter for $200, but the coil whine was insanely annoying at idle. Returned it and tried to get the 1060, but they were all gone. Found a desperate seller parting out his pc so he could buy groceries. He was asking $50 for his 1050ti, but I gave him $50 extra and bought him lunch.

Just shy of $400. Not trying to spend the whole $400 on a new card though. I'd like to keep it under $200.
