Thanks. After thinking about it for a day and finally getting a 30-50 times faster internet connection( for almost half the price), I think the 3 m.2 slots and maybe some day filling my 2 pcie slots with 10 dollar cards off Newegg will suffice. 5 ssds would be overkill for me in reality. But thanks for letting me know I have the option.

Domrockt got a reaction from Needfuldoer in NAS for long term Steam storage
nope he has a multi user setup, you cant share one library among multi users off a single NAS. At least not over smb, aside of that not all games run of a smb share with steam.

The good ol copy and paste from server to users will work fine.
ISCI is another way to go, the easy way get big drives make an ISCI Blockdevice for each user and copy the whole library across all ISCI shares. (3x the DATA) and ceep in sync with rsync.

or go bonkers with ZFS and shadow copys of snapshoots and ISCI (1x Data and minor diffrences in patches until doing it over again)

Domrockt got a reaction from OddOod in NAS OS where I can store Steam games and keep them updated? (and copy over to a windows 10 machine once the game is needed)
Soooooo iam there already, lets say its complicated...

the Problem with that is manifold..

IF shared over smb you cant play all games, alot actually wont start this way.
IF the share is shared between a few PC at once you have corruption issues since your NAS wont be cluster Filesystem aware.

So what CAN you do? You can use ISCSI and install all games on a Blockdevice, that works just fine BUT you cant share that ONE iscsi connection between multiple PC easely.

You can create of course multiple ISCSI Blockdevices and use any Backuptool to copy one updadet library to another library BUT then you habe double the Data on your NAS.

You can use ZFS as a file system and use deduplication with iscsi... eats ALOT of RAM when the library is realy Big.

You can use ZFS and use Snapsots as Blockdevices and clone them <---- i do exactly that. This way i use only 1 time the space and shadow copys for my twink PCs.

i did not investigate much in Clusteraware Filesystems afaik Proxmox and ESXI are quite usable with that.

"This is kind of similar. You definitely want a faster-than-Gigabit connection between the NAS and the clients."

not that much of importance, the games should be on an SSD Storage, most of the time we want the smallerfiles be read as fast as possible, so the 1Gbit is quite fine with 4k random reads for most Sata SSDs.

But when you use just one ISCSI BLockdevicewith an good ol HDD  with one user at a time, 1gbit speed is fine and wont be big diffrence in loading times.

you can use the Igpu in more than one application/docker/vm at the Same time.

the igpu is not the most  powerfull but will do inhouse emulation/transcoding just fine.

I think Domrockt nailed it, but to add a few details for consideration:
Minecraft servers are heavily single-thread bound, since everything on the server runs of the tick. It will use a few more cores for lighting and other things, but it will mainly peg a single core. This makes 10th gen a great selection for this, though no 10th gen CPUs support ECC memory, which may be desired from a NAS perspective. Alternative to Unraid is the newly released Truenas Scale, which is free and runs off Debian Linux, so it should have no issue handling a few docker containers. It's newer software, so you may run into some bugs and missing features, however.

good first get that GPU out, and use your IGPU with your Mainboard HDMI. To do so you need to reset your BIOS. Go to your BIOS settings and set use Integrated GPU.

from here you can Put your R9 380 back in aigain but keep the HDMI in your mainboard your PC should boot and you can check inside your windows if the GPU is still detectet.

in your case the R9 380 is a bit dated so it could be feasable that you killed your card.

I am a systems engineer and have a question. Why to use this unraid when you can have industry leading virtualization solutions for free for home use?

Vmware esxi (level 1 hypervisor) knows how to pass thru devices for ages and is free for home use. The stability and performance of this is one of the best.

Red Hat KVM (level 2 hypervisor) is also free. Download centOS or ubuntu, set kvm up and you can do pasthru as well.

HyperV (level 1&2) is also free, it is from microsoft. It is also awesome and does not require a lot of tweaking and can do passthru too.

There are so many great solutions for free and probably much more stable and faster than this unraid. Maybe easy of use, just click click and done? Honestly all of the above have gui and can be fairy easy to set them up.

I see a lot of people use freenas for their home nas, I dont get this as well. Just install centos and set up file/block storage and done. No bugs, better performance, more control over your server.

These are not so difficult to set up and believe me when I say they are MUCH better.

Domrockt reacted to Krow in This Cooler DRAWS 545W!!? Bad Cooling Ideas #2
I'm gonna put in my 2 cents as I am an enthusiast when it comes to TECs and was a contributor on Overclock.net TEC forms for a long time.

There are so many reasons I can see where this could have been great.

I think where this concept failed was your approach. First you need to determine the load that you want to cool. I usually go for 200W of load. Next you need to find out what temperature difference (between the hot and cold side) you want to achieve; 20 - 30C is my usual go to. Next you want to find a TEC that gives you 200W of cooling at that Temperature difference. Special note, the lower the temperature difference you want to achieve on a TEC, the higher the Qmax. If you want to have a 0C difference, that is the large number that everyone advertises. The 127XX TECs are absolute garbage. If you want good TECs, go with Custom Thermo Electric (here). You can easily find TECs that give you massive Qmaxs, but if you're going by Pmax, or 0C temperature difference between hot and cold side, you're achieving nothing.

People say the sweet spot is 50% power of the TEC, but the sweet spot actually refers to the Max Voltage / 2. If you get a 199XX TEC, you're looking at a max voltage of just under 24 volts. If you run that at 12V you're going to have a ballin' efficient TEC (compared to what you ran in the episode).

I just want to say, when you reach 1000W with that TEC, you killed that TEC and essentially overclocked it. You weren't cooling anything and you were heating up the cold side with the TEC itself, plus the heat from the CPU.

Now, in regard to your cold plate, it was too thin. You want to use the copper cold plate to use the edges of the TEC to cool the CPU, but it was too thin to accomplish that. I would aim for 3/4 to 1cm thick.

You're "Thermostat" was too slow to react and the solid-state relay is very inefficient and generally slower than using MOSFETs. If you want to just run a TEC at 100%, you will never get anything that resembles useful. Let me know if you'd like to learn more as I've spent years on these and I'm very well versed in them.

For extra info, some terminology of TECs:
    - Delta: Temperature difference between cold side and hot side.
    - Qmax: Amount of heat in Watts that can be moved from the cold side to the hot side at a given delta.
    - Pmax: Amount of heat generated and power used by the TEC. Pmax = V x A
    - Vmax: Defined maximum amount of voltage put into the TEC.
    - Imax: Defined maximum amount of current that can be used by the TEC.
    - 127XX: 127 couples at XX Amps (Imax) maximum (Vmax = 15.2V)
    - 199XX: 199 couples at XX Amps (Imax) maximum (Vmax = 24V)
    - There are more TECs out there, but these are generally the best ones to used in these applications.

    Thanks.

PS: This is the peltier you'd wanna use for this project

It has a ~150W Qmax at a 20C temperature difference, and uses ~144W to reach that at 12V.

I have seen a bigger and better TEC (200W at 30C difference), but I need to track down the link for that TEC.
