  1. The wireless remote might be a nice touch, hadn't thought of that one. As for that duplicator, that's EXACTLY what I needed "case" wise! The Acumen one is a bit tall though, but I found another one by Condre that's just the height of the dual drives and no higher. I'll likely gut it and put in my own electronics (SATA to USB adapter, powered USB hub etc) but this is perfect, thank you!!
  2. The length as stated above is 10-12 feet from the "box" location to the PC's future home, so not sure a regular power switch will cover it. The idea behind running it all through the PC was that we didn't need the separate player. There's no need to switch TV inputs, no separate remotes, just run a computer as is with a wireless mouse and keyboard. Ultimately of course it'd be nice to not even have an optical disc in the whole set up, but my parents have a library of dvd's and the like so they want a way to play them on the big screen.
  3. Budget (including currency): $300 (potentially higher) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Peripherals and a Blu Ray drive Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Not really sure where to post, but I have an odd project it seems. Currently, I have a rig with a Core i7-9700k with a GTX 1660 Super in a Silverstone case in my parent's living room. They'd like to clear up some of the clutter under the TV and want to use a closet as a sort of "rack" for A/V equipment including the computer. So far, so standard. However, the closet will still have a coat rack inside, which puts the computer on a shelf well above my mother's head (she's very short). I'd like to make a "remote" Blu Ray drive holder and USB hub for peripherals by the TV so no one needs to go in the closet to load a disk or access the USB ports and it can be placed as high or low as needed. I'd also like to add a second power button for the computer in the same box so even turning it on can be done "remotely". The best concept I've been able to think up so far is just to buy a case and leave it empty, using the front panel and drive slot for these but anything with a 5.25" bay seems to be quite large. Ultimately, if someone knows of an external "unit" that's only big enough for two 5.25" bays or one 5.25" bay and a 3.5" bay, that would be ideal. If I have to make something, I will, but I'd like to try "plug and play" parts first. Side note, the distance from the closet to the shelf below the TV is about 10-12 feet, so anything I use has to carry a signal that far. From what I've seen, USB has options to carry a signal that far, so I think it'll be ok for keyboard and mouse. My dad's Logitech controller may be another story but he's just playing GTAV SP and some solo racing games, nothing competitive so latency isn't a deal breaker. Any other questions, ask away! Thanks in advance!
  4. Great video, just curious what parts you used in the rigging of the BMCC. I can figure out some of the parts but I saw the handle on the rear and can't find any remote handles for the BMCC anywhere. Was just curious on your parts breakdown. Me and my buddy are trying to get into the indie film scene and we've settled on the BMCC for it's flexibility, cost and usability. We were considering it's bigger brother the URSA Mini Pro 4k but it's disappointing in low light conditions and seems to be a more controlled environment type camera. We might still get one in the future, but for our first script, we've got a lot of night shots in NYC and other urban areas so the BMCC is better for us now anyway.
  5. sorry guys, it's sold. But thanks for the interest! I thought this thing was a junker but i guess it's worth something. I have more boxes that the company is junking, i'll keep you guys informed. The boss isn't good at tech stuff, and luckily, we've got a place to take advantage of it lol
  6. yeah sorry mate. But i tell you what, didn't expect people would want it lol hey, one man's trash is another man's treasure
  7. aight, just so you know too, it doesn't have a graphics card. but if you want it, it's only headed for the trash heap anyway, so s+h and it's yours.
  8. So I have an AMD FX -4130 3.8Ghz cpu on a MSI 760GM-P23 motherboard with 4 Gb of ram, no storage drive or fans and the cpu cooler was removed so it need new thermal paste. question is, is it a rig worth doing anything with? my guess is no since the part are out of production but just looking for confirmation before i throw the whole thing into a bin. (it's a former workstation at my office)
  9. Or, alternatively, for about 200 more, you can get a g-sync computer with an ssd http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Fangbook_4_XTREME_G-SYNC_100_Gaming_Laptop
  10. Honestly, I'd go with this msi rig. lighter, better processor and better gpu http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0150PLJBS/ref=psdc_565108_t3_B013WM9QMA
  11. My dad has an LG G2 and it recently overheated, drained the battery flat and died. When he tried to recharge it, the charger in his van wasn't enough. He brought it home and it recharged, but still ran warmer than before. Anyone have any ideas? It's about 2 years old so it's about time for a new one, but just wondering is there anything to help this one stay alive longer. He loves it and he's not such an easy guy to please with touch screen devices (he has large, rather insensitive fingers and the g2 is both big enough and sensitive enough for him) Thanks in advance for any advice.
  12. I ran the tests 2 times each, once with standard cooling, once with the "turbo fan" button on. Seemed to do a little better with it on so I posted these. Keep in mind it's a laptop.
  13. Gotcha. I figured it'd be too much of a bottleneck, just wanted to confirm. Thanks!
  14. So here's a question for people with far more knowledge than me. If I have an HP Pavilion DM-4 laptop with a Core i5-450m processor and 4 GB of ram, could I use an external graphics card set up over a USB 2.0 connection? Mind you, not a top-of-the-line GTX 980, but maybe a GTX 650? Or some other lower-end but decent card? This is more for curiosity and general insanity than true usability, but it makes me wonder nonetheless.
  15. I'd love a video about external graphics cards. Maybe it's not a TechTips feature, but maybe an As Fast As Possible. Other than that, how about a review of "smart home" technologies? Like the "nest" thermostat or other remote-controlled home appliances?
