So it turns out on my car the idle is controlled primary by a piece of wax in a pipe. What makes this confusing is the backup is a mechanical quite well engineered valve.
What happens is the waxstat as it's called hardens and then in turn sticks your hot running idle at around 2,000rpm which is most delightful with a CVT transmission!
The mechanical valve only comes into play when the wax one totally fails, now I am sure any sane person will agree the wax one needs removing, throwing at a wall and hitting with a hammer until the hammer breaks.
That is tomorrows plan.
