Yeah when I’m taking it apart I’ll make sure to fully clean it and replace the thermal paste, it is really disgusting with lots of caked on dust from the last owner. I’ve got a tube of Arctic MX-4 to use on it. Thanks again for the advice.

You can mostly work around non-standard pixel layouts using proper clear-type settings. Also, you're gonna be using scaling most likely. Set that to 125% or 150% and text will be bigger either way. Even my LG OLED which uses WBGR (so even more non-standard than the FV43U) has excellent text clarity when used at 125% scaling and higher with the correct clear-type settings. QD-OLED has bigger problems though and the typical fixes have very mixed results.

    Also needs to borne in mind, I'm retaining at least one of the Samsung S27D850T 27-Inch WQHD Monitor (Black) - (16:9, 1000:1, 350 cd/m², 2560 x 1440, 5 ms, HDMI/DisplayPort)

I'm intending to mount on a VESA arm mount, as a 'reading panel'

So I think I'll be fine, I've read that there is adjustments that can be made per panel for text clarity (such as Windows ClearType)

From what I've read the BGR thing is common to all > 43" LED screens

Having a separate 1440p screen as a side panel will help if I have any serious issues.

Honestly that QN90B 43 inch is a good alternative though - and arguably a better option.

I am using the Gigabyte 43U. It's 'fine' but definitely not perfect in may area. Dark transition is bad (which mean a a lot dark smearing), viewing angle is abyssmal poor, and there's visible dirty screen effect on solid colour image. But it make up for it in being one of the first affordable HDR 'monitor' in the market. And even then, it's not perfect (but actually worth using)

QN90B (43 inch) suffered from all of these issue - and more, but it also has a much stronger advantage in HDR. 300 dimming zones vs 8. And while it's a little worse off in every way, the disadvantages aren't as signficant as the advantages.

If you care about HDR at all, there aren't a lot of reason to go with Gigabyte instead of Samsung. You lose some clarity at 144hz (but most games can't run at that frame rate anyway with the current hardware), and may have to deal with Samsung infamous QC issue (and have to deal with TV hassles), but otherwise QN90B 43 inch is a worthy successor of the FV43U (barely)

*Also if you don't mind even bigger display, you can also go 50 inch. Not sure about the QN90B but the Q90A 50 inches doesn't have black smearing issue and also have a much better viewing angle than FV43U. I've compared these two exact displays personally.

The Samsung QN90B 43" TV is stuck at 60 Hz

I'm pulling the trigger on the https://www.scan.co.uk/products/43-gigabyte-fv43u-4k-monitor-va-3840x2160-144hz-1ms-freesync-hdr1000-40001-1000cd-m-hdmi-dp

I can get it for GB £689.00 ex tax so can add things like an enhanced installation protection warranty etc with delivery on Saturday (around GB £730.00 all in)

From what I can see whilst it may not be a 'perfect' monitor it, compromises to try to do everything I need, its VA LED and/or gives decent enough performance with a good lifetime, without breaking the bank. If the QA isn't good I can go back to Scan (I purchased my ASUS 3080Ti from them). They're a reputable supplier.

This means I can buy a separate OLED 4K tv, for doing that. TV/media and so on

mark_cameron reacted to Stahlmann in QD-OLED - what's taking them so long? Alternative sizes?
So we agree that every display has some weaknesses. It all comes down to what the specific user can live with. If you can counteract (not rectify) some weaknesses with slight adjustments to your behavior than that's good. (For example using screen saver, dark mode and hidden task bar for OLED burn-in) Other issues like comparatively low brightness is not something the user can really adjust other than sitting in a dark room.

In the end you as a user have to decide what weakness is a dealbreaker or something you can live with.
All i can do is write about my own experience and the preferences that have arisen as a result.

Both Linus and Wendell are good examples of a worst-case scenario for an OLED screen. They use it for work, displaying the same apps for hours on end. In their workflow they don't even need a display that prioritizes image quality above all else. They could just aswell go for a 42" VA panel and it'll be fine. They simply chose the wrong tool for the job. Much in the same way you also don't use a ratchet screwdriver as a hammer.

A few notes about RTING's burn-in test and OLED burn-in in general:

    - They used C7 TV's which are 5 generations old by now. OLED displays have gotten more resistant against burn-in ever since with both hardware improvements to the panel and software improvements to anti burn-in algorithms. Even RTINGS themself admit that these results probably don't compare to modern TV's anymore which is why they're currently in the process of starting another one of these long-term tests.

    - The two TV's displaying games represent the closest use case to PC useage. Both of these had almost no noticeable burn-in at the end of the test. Only the FIFA (high-risk game) TV had slight issues at full red and magenta images. The COD (low-risk game) TV had no signs of burn-in. Still, these fullscreen colors don't represent real world useage, so the FIFA TV probably doesn't even have noticeable levels of burn in yet. Mind you that even these two tests are significantly more taxing on burn-in than any normal PC use-case. Normal people play different games and use different apps. I have yet to see someone with 9000 hours of playtime in a single game.

    - The test ended at 9000 hours of useage. That's an average of just under 5 hours a day, every day, for 5 years. That's probably a lot more than the average user will accumulate over 5 years.

This isn't supposed to be a personal attack, but anyone that says burn-in is a huge problem on OLED hasn't done any research on the topic. It can be a problem, but it isn't for most people, which is why LG's smaller OLED TV's are very popular among display enthusiasts. If you buy an OLED as a general use monitor or a TV, don't worry about it. If you need the display for work every day and then some, get something different. OLED is not the right tool for the job.

I don't know why people always go by how 5+ year old OLED displays look when talking about OLED. People don't draw conclusions about intel's next generation of CPUs by looking at 6th or 7th gen products.

Normally i'd say the C2 is a great display and i use one myself. But as you say you also work on it, i wouldn't recommend OLED in your case. There are other options like the Gigabyte FV43U that aren't as good, but don't carry the risk of burn in.

I did the same thing with my RTX 2080. According to the DOM, it was in 2018, and I got the card in 2019 open boxed at Micro Center. After heavy gaming sessions last summer, I've noticed temperatures started to increase even with dusting the graphics card off. Temperatures in game were around 60-70oC, with the latter in 3D Mark benchmark runs. I did the repasted 2 weeks ago and I noticed the thermal paste was thick. Used NT-H1 and cleaned the cooler out completely and put it back together. Temps are around 50-58oC (again 58 at most in benchmarks). I'm really glad I repasted the card.

My temperatures this morning under load: +86/87 Celsius

Needed to strip the card down (not PCB from backplate), just take off shroud and the individual fans.

Thermal compound clean (it had gone hard) and replacement.

Post fan, A,B,C replacement and reassembly.

US$50.00 well spent on the fans and/or the replacement thermal compound.
