  1. Budget (including currency): $2900 USD absolute max Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: content creation, video rendering, streaming, gaming, future experimentation (3d modeling, vm's, running game servers, 3d animation) Other details; pcpartpicker list, https://pcpartpicker.com/user/tryhard_techy1169/saved/#view=MQmMVn my current system of 8 years is well since due for not only an update, it's a bit late for that but rather a full replacement as I know that the motherboard is half shot and might not last the rest of the year. however for the first time in my life i have the opportunity to not only upgrade to a better pc but a no compromises 16 core 5950x pc. this will be a life changing experience that will allow me to do anything i should want to now or in the future. of course as any tech enthusiast would i have spent the past several days carefully choosing and researching parts for this build. I have all but one part locked in and set on, the one troublesome part is the memory. I have learned more about memory in the past 2 days than i would have ever thought I needed to. it is my understanding that zen 3 CPU's like 3600mhz memory as a sweet spot so it can easily match up with the fclock. it also likes the lowest cas latency the memory can run and 4 ranks of memory as a sweet spot . that is where the core of the problem unfolds. from what I understand and have seen it is rare that memory manufacturers ever state how many ranks a memory kit has since until first gen ryzen it never mattered and this attitude largely persists to this day. while I do have a 4x16GB kit of memory in the pcpartpicker list I am completely unable to tell if it is single or dual rank. from what little info i have been able to gather it is dual rank which is supposedly a problem, but yet again I can't find any information on how big of a problem that would be. so in short i have everything selected and ready to go except for the ram which seems to lead me to a dead end no matter where I look. so if anyone can suggest a g skill trident z memory kit that is 4x16GB single rank with similar timings to what i have picked under $550 i would be very grateful. many of you will suggest just dropping down to a known good 32GB kit and call it a day. with this being no compromises and the workloads i intend i already know for a fact that 32GB will not be enough and more importantly not future proof. this system is intended to last me at least 8 years and kick ass it's entire lifetime. I never again want to encounter something i want to do and be limited by a poor hardware choice. i look forward to your feedback and comments on this build and hopefully this will shed a bit more light on the memory industry and why it is the way it is.
  2. for the past 2 weeks i have had to live with my corsair mouse and keyboard being stuck in RGB puke mode because when i did my fresh windows 10 install and was installing all other software's needed and corsair Icue completely froze my system about half way through installation. I have tried 3 different times even with older versions of Icue and the result is always the same. i have even been in contact with corsair support and they have struck out as well. i am hoping someone else here has run into the same problem and has advice. for all of you about to waste time suggesting i can install Icue on a separate system and change the hardware profiles you would be wrong, i have tried and the lighting only works on system with Icue on it! so don't waste your time.
  3. I am in the process of preparing to update my main rig to windows 10. in preparation for this i was going to use my old ivy bridge based laptop as a test bed to try everything on before doing anything to my 3770k main rig. of course as per usual i ran into a problem. my laptop is on windows 10 version 1903 and keeps running into problems trying to update to version 20h1. with this setback in mind i am even more concerned about the entire idea than i already was. so my questions to you today are why will my laptop not update to the later versions when every source i can find states the ivybridge family is fully supported? will this same limited upgrade path happen to me when i do a fresh install onto my boot ssd? (i made the usb bootable media less than 2 months ago) as always ONLY RESPOND IF YOU HAVE RELEVANT EXPERIENCE! guesses and assumptions serve no good and waste both of our time.
  4. i am currently weighing the pro's and cons of "upgrading" from windows 7 to windows 10. i personally hate the idea of even considering this but in order to do what i want it is appearing to be more and more necessary. so while i overcome my dread i need to know how likely and common it is to have something go wrong when updating to windows 10 from an existing windows 7 installation. my logic here is if i have to step up i want it to be done and over with as fast as possible. if i have to do a clean install i can have most stuff back on my system by the end of the day but again i would like to avoid that if possible. also i have to hope that this time (my 3rd time attempting this, last time was 3-4 years ago) that microsoft doesn't randomly decide to kill my key and corrupt my OS 2 weeks in. as always please only comment if you have experience with this process! i can't emphasize this enough, guesses and speculation only waste both of our time. ONLY COMMENT IF YOU HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE in going from an active windows 7 pro install to windows 10 pro.
  5. my current rig is a i7 3770k with a GTX1070 running windows 7 (other specs are in my profile). while my CPU doesn't support x265 or h.265 video encoding or decoding i know my GTX1070 technically does and i have been using it to record h.265 video. the frustration i run into is i currently can't render/encode any video in premiere on h.265 unless i want to wait stupid amounts of time on my ancient CPU. in tests it has getten as bad as 10 minutes to render 1 minute of footage to x265. getting down to the core of the problem i am considering switching to windows 10 only if i can 100% use my GTX1070 in adobe premiere to hardware encode/render videos as that is my biggest bottleneck and the only reason aside from a hardware upgrade i would ever consider switching to windows 10. i am aware of the adobe requirements for hardware encoding supposedly requiring 6th and 7th gen core CPU's but i'm fairly certain those requirements are just to cover the quick-sync hardware encoding options. as always only respond to this IF YOU HAVE HANDS ON EXPERIENCE! speculation serves me no good and just wastes time.
  6. in a few days i will be helping a friend build a new PC and a few parts have already arrived including the motherboard. the motherboard is an Asus strix b550 gaming-f. i am aware that during the initial launch of the b550 motherrboards and earlier series you would have to get a last generation CPU in order to update the bios then swap up to the desired current gen CPU. i'm also aware that this motherboard has the passive bios flashback option which is great. my main question is do i need to worry about flashing the bios at all since this series of motherboards have been in production for a good while now or is the bios shipping with these boards the same as start up production and still require an update to allow zen3 (ryzen 5000 series) CPU's to function? as always thank you for reading and please only respond IF YOU HAVE HANDS ON EXPERIENCE! guesses and assumptions don't help anyone.
  7. the other day i was updating my Nvidia graphics driver and had a BSOD. after restarting and finishing the driver installation a few hours later i started noticing that randomly there is a clicking sound that comes and goes as far as i can tell completely at random. i know it's not my headset because it still works perfectly fine 99.98% of the time. i know it's not the cable because just a few weeks ago i had to replace a frayed one. i fear it might be my motherboard since i use motherboards onboard realtek HD audio controller and have flawlessly since i got the board back in 2012. to complicate matters even more the audio only starts to get the random click/ticking after my pc has been on for a few hours. last but not least it happens no matter if i'm watching a youtube video, talking on discord or playing games. if anyone has experience with a similar problem please give me some advice in the comments. if you don't have any experience with audio troubles DON'T COMMENT. guessing doesn't help solve problems.
  8. i am in the planning stages of a build upgrade. going from a z77 3770k to (hopefully) a b550/5800x. the plan currently is to replace the motherboard, CPU, ram and add a m.2 ssd which should all be fine but i'm not sure if i can continue to use my H100i V1 with the b550 motherboard. some light research shows it theoretically compatible with first gen am4 motherboards but i have yet to find anyone using this type of configuration as a daily. if anyone can point me to some builds that confirm compatibility or official support documentation that would be great.
  9. upon further investigation and assistance from the LTT discord server i have discovered that the problem is a BS exclusion put in place by microsoft to shaft windows 7 users trying to use H.265. downloading a codec pack didn't help, using windows media player with that pack does nothing different and reinstalling vlc and resarting after does nothing. also none of the 2-3 in windows settings tips were useful as my defaults already were set to allow thumbnails.
  10. I'm wanting to switch my video recording over from nvidia shadowplay to OBS mainly to switch from h.264 and it's huge file sizes down to h.265 managable file sizes with same quality. while i have been running test recording and i'm generally happy with file size and video quality the recorded files have no thumbnail and show no resolution in the details section. as soon as i switch back over to h.264 i don't have any issues. some important details to note i am running a 3770k on windows 7 so no native X265 support. my VLC media player is fully updated and handles H.265 perfectly fine. the only thing i can figure is that because my CPU doesn't natively support H.265 i have to find the windows 7 compatible version of the H.265 codec. however i have no idea what websites with such codecs are safe and if this problem is solvable at all with microsoft's relentless drive to pull anyone it can onto windows 10. please for the sake of my sanity and to spare your time only respond if you have experience with this topic. assumptions and guesses serve no one any good here.
  11. Greetings, recently i have purchased a Asus strix GTX 1070 OC edition from eBay and it should be arriving either tomorrow or the day after. while i am waiting for it to arrive i would like to get everything i can ready to minimize setup time. my questions are as follows: 1. do i have to use Asus aura sync to control the RGB lighting? 2. is any special/Asus only software required for the external fan control function? 3. are both HDMI ports available for monitor functionality or is one of them dedicated to only VR headsets? 4. can i monitor the GPU wattage use of this card with MSI Afterburner? 5. what are the most common known problems with this model of card? 6. can the built in NVENC encoder on the GPU be used to render videos in adobe premiere to H.265 ? please only respond if you have experience with this card or the questions i am asking about. thank you for reading and i look forward to some informed responses.
  12. i want to port forward a rust server through my personal Netgear router and through my ISP's modem/router combo so i can access it in game through Geforce Now. i have 0 experience port forwarding and want to get this done simply and safely. any experienced help is greatly welcomed. if you haven't done this before don't comment.
  13. For the past two weeks i have been looking around at all manner of RTX cards and their performance in games i play and with hardware i run. After much research i have settled on the RTX 2060 Super as my next GPU to upgrade too. knowing the reputation Asus has for taking Nvidia GPU cores to the max with their Strix cards i naturally went looking for a review of their strix version of the 2060 super to no avail. i did some searching online and found very little in the way of any serious review. i am very puzzled as to why such a card has seemingly gone under the radar of tech reviewers. the only real info i was able to get was from what i saw in Gamers Nexus's video on the 2070 super & 2060 super joint review. The 2060 super should be a great lower cost option for 2070 like performance with a small overclock. so this is where you all come in, if you have a 2060 Super from Asus or not i want to know your experience and overclocks! i want to get the best possible idea of how the card performs and any problems to expect. thank you for reading and i look forward to learning more about this seemingly under appreciated card.
  14. I have recently purchased the corsair K70 RGB mk.2 and after two weeks of getting used to it i have mostly adjusted and got used to it. however there is one thing i simply can't get used to, the textured space bar corsair includes standard on the keyboard with no smooth alternative. why on earth a huge company like corsair would make a stupid mistake like this is well and truly beyond me. either way this leaves me with a textured space bar i can use but i would very much like to replace with a smooth soft touch rubber coated keycap just like the rest of the keys. if anyone has any idea on where to get a replacement spacebar keycap for this particular keyboard please let me know. also for any other users of this keyboard is there anything i should know about or look out for?
