If you have a hot air gun (even a crappy one) SMD is soooo much easier and doable. I would recommend you watch some tutorial videos from Louis Rossman so you can get familiar on how to properly use flux and re-tin solder pads. I strongly suggest you get at least a magnifying glass. Finally make sure you buy the exact connector for your phone, not all connectors are equal and even a small size or form difference can screw you over.

In addition to the bracket screws for your graphics bracket you probably want a GPU supporter in the back and maybe the front, a scrap piece of wood or wooden dowel cut to size should work to help support it and lift it off the bottom. How significant this is somewhat dependent on the pcie extender you use. That being said I don't have direct experience, this is just what I would do.
As for an air filter ModDiy.com has a couple options as so do other sites so shop around and determine what you want and how much your willing to pay. Best of luck!
