  1. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll play around with them. As I mentioned I have stuck with the tried and true standard raid options. I typically go for 1 parity drive for every 6, so 12 max drives in a raid6 array. But anyways, I might as well describe my use case. My NAS should be accessible via NFS and smb. I plan to store files you'd find on Plex, as well as general files, photos, but also large disk images and surveillance footage. I have other servers on my rack as well that would use this storage pool. Performance is nice but its not too essential, or I have an separate array/pool for performance if I need that.
  2. What solutions exist to offer parity data protection while also allowing the array to be expanded easily with a new drive if I need to add new space. As it stands now with the solution I use I have to essentially know my future requirements now in order to have a regular raid array. It would be nice to just plop in a new drive at a whim. I am open to anything I can install on a regular server. I typically run standard linux software raid over hdds or ssds with an ext4 volume on them. My main nas server uses raid6. It is a collection of 9x6TB drives and I am at the point where I want to look into a new solution. I plan to setup a new server that is going to itself house drives as well as have direct attached drives in the future. In order to expand a raid6 array, it has to be taken offline and extended, which takes a while. It is a scary and intensive process. It would be nice to not have to deal with that process and instead use some other method. Thanks.
  3. I attended a convention 9 days ago. While at the convention, a well known and popular troll youtuber filmed an interaction with me where he physically assaulted me. I did not consent to the interaction. I also separately had a badge hanging from a lanyard with my artwork on it. Both my artwork and footage of me being assaulted is now on his new youtube video uploaded yesterday which has now over 2.4 million views. I don't know what to do in order to get this video off of youtube. Please help! I don't wish to provide the video link or the name of the youtuber, I am already highly embarrassed and traumatized by the situation.
  4. I love running my small 2 person company. But I get that a 100 person company would be too much for my autistic @@@ so I won't cry over his decision. But I only watch these days because it is still mostly Linus. If he stops being in the videos then I'll honestly move on. If this move makes him more available for videos than that is great.
  5. I am surprised I had not heard linus talk about the new youtube handles, unless I missed that video. Regardless, I get notified to select a handle, but I can not for the life of me find out where to actually do this. Their help pages doesn't actually link you to where you are supposed to chose this. For example what happens if someone chose your handle before you got a chance and is now impersonating you. I thought your youtube account name was how you interact with people, but now it is supposed to be some new thing. I don't get it.
  6. I disagree, such a world record PI attempt is worth much more.
  7. Limiting factor is storage (hdds) not your cpu, as I've ran calculations.. its why I created the topic, I'm pretty familiar with the software I linked to run the computation. 1PB of flash will allow you to saturate the total CPU capacity.
  8. The calculation would take less time on flash storage as other calculations are done on mechanical hdds. I thought it was the recent one on Friday the 18th. I don't want to double post, I didn't really think it could be a video idea but now that you mention it.
  9. In recent WAN show I think Linus mentioned he has a cluster of 1PB of flash on loan. I think Linus can do a really cool thing with it! A World Record PI Calculation! The current record is 62.8 trillion digits. http://www.numberworld.org/y-cruncher/ 100 trillion only needs 503TB and 166TB for the output. You would run two calculations to completeness using both algorithms (Chudnovsky) and (Ramanujan), using the second to very the first. If you think this is a cool thing for Linus to do, let him know!
  10. I can't emphasize enough that everything was coated with copper, the tubings have copper flaking off of them, I've had two pumps die, looks like a lot of copper in the last one. the radiators themselves look clean enough. I cleaned it out with some alcohol solution when I got them 1.5 years ago. The first time the waterblock had enough copper in there it was restricting the flow somewhat on the flowplate in there. I followed the directions on the concentrate. I don't have good photos but here is the second pump.
  11. Hi. I've been building PC's since 1998. I'd consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in the art, but one thing that I haven't done until recently is do a custom water loop. Back when the Threadripper 3960x came out, I went and got one. I had decided to go with a custom loop. The problem I'm having is that every 8 months or so my pump dies. Its probably because my loop is coated in green copper oxide. I've been using distilled water and EK Cryofuel coolant mix. I have all copper parts. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Linus makes it seem so easy all the time. I'm using mostly all Corsair parts, Corsair pump (Which I had to RMA on the first time it died) Took forever to get the RMA so I had a different pump but it died as well. As I mentioned its probably due to the copper. So, All copper Corsair Radiators, flexable tubing and fittings all Corsair. I have an EK Velocity waterblock. That has some chrome plating on it, but I've seen plenty of tech tubers using the same waterblock. I've had to clean that waterblock several times due to the copper that gums it up. Am I missing something? Should I just use pre mixed coolants or some other type of fluid?
  12. Linus mentioned a "Intel pc tech support challenge 2" but I'm not sure where this is or when, does anyone have any link or info. Thanks.
  13. I ended up calling support, the person finished up the RMA process, and I got it sent via UPS.
  14. I'm still waiting for corsair to grant me an RMA, worst experience I've had from a company in a while. Its been over a week, having to jump through all sorts of hoops then take 2-4 days for them to reply back, oh no we need you to jump through more hoops. All the while my pc is down because I need a pump.
  15. https://www.digitalinformationworld.com/2020/08/heads-up-creators-youtube-sunsetting-emails-subscriber-updates.html#:~:text=So%2C%20YouTube%20has%20decided%20that,this%20feature%20will%20be%20gone.&text=So%2C%20these%20emails%20take%20a,from%20their%20other%20important%20mails. The answer is that Youtube has stopped sending ALL emails. I'm a bit floored.. I now have to go to youtube.com, and individually click on each of my subscriptions, click on videos then look at the list and decide if there is a new video there. It takes around 200 times the effort to keep up to date with all of my subs. I can't do this, and basically am going to watch less youtube as a result. I don't know what to do, how else is youtube expecting me to get updates or notifications about my subs new videos. I just use a browser and email, is there some desktop app I don't know about? Are there any other services out there that use their API to curate a list of new videos for me?
  16. LTT is like over 20% of my usual Youtube viewing. Youtube doesn't give me notifications anymore about new videos, I have the "all notifications" on. Not sure what to do about it.
  17. I've been waiting for the AMD Threadripper 24 core cpu all year pretty much. Its a dream of a chip. But, am I being real though? Is it worth it? Would the 3950x be better? not to mention half the price. Been trying since launch to get the 3960x, but with the wait I'm doubting the eventual purchase. I had the same type of doubts last year when I put in a custom order for a $50k Mustang. I love it now that I have it. I don't game. Well, I "Game" but not like you think, I'm old and I only like building/creative games, or storylines. So like Cities skylines, or Dragon Age.. very brief list, but I don't care about top of the line performance as far as FPS or any of that or spend much time gaming. What I do though, I am a tech enthusiast, I am mostly a programmer. I write, design, test heavy lifting software that uses lots of cpu power, lots of I/O especially***. I work with large databases of various types, I move large amounts of data around between my two separate areas, home and work. I do lots of various intensive tasks to suit my fancy for exploring technology, and I run my business which I do most of the same type of work. So my PC is a combination of work and home since I like to do similar things, using your skillset to its potential sort of thing. I have a poor choice of a pc currently for such tasks. Built almost 5 years ago. I have lots of various servers currently at home that I use to accomplish the types of tasks I could eventually do on a fully specced Threadripper system. The PCIE lanes is the real driver of my choice for a Threadripper. I mean I would get a Threadripper 3000 series 16 core cpu.. but the ryzen one honestly has about the same number of lanes as the 4790k that I have and I'm already maxed out on here with 1 gpu, 1 40GB infiniband sfp+ card, thats already 16 lanes. all my sata ports are used and I have an nvme slotted into my other slot at 4x. I don't get good speeds on any of my devices unless I'm selective about what I'm doing at the time. While with gen4 in theory there is more bandwidth but my devices are mostly gen3, so that only really applies to the chipset lanes since it can manage that traffic. While I can afford the 3960x and associated components, I just don't want to get grossly more than I need. I do reasonably well at my business and expect that having such a chip will enable me to do more, but would appreciate any one to weigh in on what they think.
  18. http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi?action=thispage&thispage=011003000501_B6YZ293P.shtml&order_id=159809592&sitem=B6YZ293#Availability I waited for newegg as long as I could, I put in my preorder, they still have ~100 spots left. price gouged $100 oh well I don't want to wait 4 months Ive been waiting all year for this cpu.
  19. Ive been seeing a few of these "half my ram is gone" posts, I happened upon this https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-3000-cpus-memory-recommendations-asrock,39756.html basically it may not support 4 slots at high memory speeds. Not sure if this is the case.
  20. 3900x has been mostly available at least on newegg, but with no one being able to get the 3950x looks like some decided heck with it and bought out the 3900x too. I've got a case and PSU Ready, I hope I don't have to wait too long to get a cpu.
  21. Ive been trying to get a 3960x all day, no luck. Though I have found two sites here in the US that are taking pre orders. I'll keep trying newegg/amazon/bestbuy for the next while, then I'll put in a preorder, the price is gouged a little bit though. I'll link the site once I get my order in lol =/
  22. Its out there.. just sold out within 3 minutes.
