Every Apple event since the introduction of the macbook pro in my eyes has been a lost opportunity to make something great. iphone ? Sure great cpu, great OS. But the battery life is still very poor and with the removal of the 3.5mm jack it is the first apple product in the history of the company that I truly do not like and would not want to own. Maybe it's a priority thing, they no longer care about heavy users so they don't invest on making laptops with good cooling for example.

Macbook PRO ? What's the pro part ? It's cooling is too weak to compile anything big, and they intentionally do not thermal throttle it so every time you push it it wears the hardware out. I guess the only uses I can see for it would be for music( it is the industry standard atm) and some video/photo editing for hobbyists and lazy youtubers. I have talked to people from the movie industry and according to them only Premier is good enough for real professional use, but Premier is less optimized than FCPX due to the multiple workflows and code paths it supports, so a machine that overheats is not an option for it. I guess the IDE is good there so you can develop on the mac and SSH it to a server for compiling, but you do not need the kind of hardware that is on a macbook pro for what is essentially a text editor.
Want to talk about the new macbook ? What's to say about it ? One port ? Tablet-level hardware for 1k+ ? Everything soldered ? Just a glorified netbook. You don't pay for a good computer, you are paying for disposable technology. Their mac ecosystem is getting worse and worse as time passes by. Ffs, a wireless mouse that charges from underneath... What about the imacs ? Great screens, and that is one of the last few points I can give to apple, I wish other companies did the same screens and did not overkill resolutions on stupid 13 inch laptops with 4k screens. But intentionally putting mobile gpus on them so users can't upgrade them is retarded. It seems like all of their heavy duty professional devices are more and more targeted towards prosumers who just get a boner thinking they have a "professional" device. I tend to do a lot of research on what computers to buy and when looking at the mac ecosystem I found out so many shit hidden underneath the nice aluminum enclosure that it becomes disgusting.

Their casual consumer devices is something me and most of the ltt community is uninterested in. And it seems like more often than not I dislike people who are heavy apple users, not because they use apple devices but because they seem to share some common characteristics that I don't like. Half of them are people with parents rich enough that just don't care about life anymore or disgusting hipsters trying to be "alternatives" by buying stuff that other people just can't afford. That imo is the worst way to be different. And one of the last excuses apple had about having a problem-free ecosystem is slowly going away with more and more bugs on iOS and macOS with every update. I laugh at every WWDC conference when they talk about how stable their new version is and then wifi doesn't work, the computer changes it's desktop cover to a dick pick, whatever. I think it was El Capitan or Yosemite that even broke some plug ins for their professional music production, the last thing they are doing well.

I'm not the most DYI heavy guy, in fact I am not a big fan of the pc ecosystem as it is mostly an ecosystem maintained by a couple corporations, so the actual creativity is limited in looks and flashy LED stuff that I find useless. If im doing a DYI project I'd rather do it on linux and some single-board computer like the RPi for example. But for any critical work I find the apple ecosystem more and more a ghost of it's past. Updating a 3 year old mac is the worst idea ever as you are prone to crashes and all that good stuff. And with how closed the code is, you can't fix any of it yourself, so you are waiting for an apple fix that never comes and then you end up buying a new mac. Because you are so locked in the ecosystem with gb upon gb of iphoto picks that you can't just move away.

Here is the thing. Apple used to be innovative. Now, they photocopy ideas and claim their own without even having a better implementation. The company doesn't have a clear direction for its OS, where its GUI is getting a mess more and more at every release, and their products, while well made, are now all about locking Apple users in to make it very difficult to leave, and to push the sale of accessories (a lucrative business). All this, because Apple is loosing marketshare. They are loosing the grasp from people, as it is not able to continue to be innovative or bring interesting features. If Apple wants to keep its users, and GROW, they should always be at the forefront. They can't afford to sleep.

Products that were first release were polished in the past. You had a nice experience out of the box. Now they are filled with issues. This situation is only gets worse and worse every year. They don't care and have nor give any attention to its customers which their product aims at. Moreover, issues are quickly hidden, follows a draconian business model (say something bad in a review? Fine! No more review device for you. No more invited to any Apple event. You are ban for life!). The company has no proudness and lives off its fans.

For example: Before, MacBook Pro, provided you with this small form factor managed to put a dedicated graphics (remember, chips were hot at the time compared to now), have great battery life, great cooling, backlight keyboard, solid build quality, great everything for an amazing experience. Sure expensive, but the only place where you could get this full package, and was an easy and simple choice for the customer who seek the best. Now: Here is a laptop, it only has 1 port, nothing special, meh all around, other manufactures are more innovative, the look of the device has never been really touched, and it starts to look more and more outdated each year.

That is why people are harsh with Apple. You had this company, yes their product was expensive, but ignoring that, was pushing the industry forward. Now, it is sleeping and not doing anything. Not pushing the boundary of anything. Just creating inconvenience, taking advantage of its media attention and its users, and fans who defend their decisions. Fine at first (I mean a product can't please everyone, and Apple has its own market in any case). But now it reached to a point that there are 0 justifications, especially that other manufactures not only has products that are better in every way, like Apple did before, including quality, or at worst near that (again, for the same target segment.. obviously we are not talking about that 500$ laptop).

Apple used to push the industry forward. I mean, if it was not for Apple, we would probably be still be with those ugly ass beige boxes... ok maybe not in 2016.. but Apple sure did push things to get us nice looking systems as options in both laptop and desktops sooner. They showed that people cared about looks, at least to some level, and that could push sales. They pushed high specs and excellent cooling at the same time on other manufactures. They pushed great displays, they were daring in trying something new (different plastics (transparent, color, more durable), aluminum, glass)

Now... they have nothing... no thing to show.. people see this massive potential in Apple, but disappointments after disappointment are only released. It is like the company started with this massive R&D lab, now it is just a team of 5 people trying to think about ideas.

MacBook, 1 port, overheats, nothing special, nothing new to the table, we have better and more features rich device just as thin, and subjectively better looking, and same/similar build quality. The iPhone 7, the taptic engine vibrates the phones left and right making it uncomfortable to use due to the slippery metal texture they use, you feel like the phone can fall off, no headphone plug while other phones are just as thin, and more water proof have it, and have 0 compromise. Apple claims thinnest is important, but cuts battery instead of cutting display thickness, which they can, by a lot, by switching to OLED display, especially that these days OLED has solved many of its drawbacks like: image retention, color shifting over time, low brightness, and cost. All in order to push their battery cover, or have people switch to the new iPhone sooner, as the battery wear over a year make it deliver insufficient battery life for most (over time, battery life reduces). There is no iPhone 7 on display beside the Apple store. Why hiding the device? Maybe to not see the issues listed (I went to the Apple store and have a look). Maybe to have a mass number of people around to make it look interesting. I don't know... but it isn't like Apple. Apple usually LOVES people to touch, anywhere, their system, and feel them. So what is going on now?

Apple users should be angry and demand more from Apple. Competition is good! Consumers who like Apple ecosystem, deserves better. Apple talent that the company had in the past with the ability to offer great experiences, new features, all in a very simple matter, is disappearing. Yes yes, you didn't have jam pack number of features, but that is the point. You have what most really needs. Now, to me, it feels like that they don't push innovation because they are afraid, have 0 courage to determine what should be there or not, and how to present it. Apple claiming "Courage" for removing the headphone plug is a sign that they have 0 courage. A courageous person, doesn't need to say that they are courageous. Their action defines that already. Here it doesn't. Business wise, it is great! More accessories to sell. But against consumers.

That is what I can conclude based on my observations currently.

Im going to be honest here. I dont like apple that much i only own one of there products and its an ipod. It serves its purpose. But when it comes down to the bigger products like the laptops and the imacs my school has they suck. Heres an example for you i bought an exteranl hard drive from seagate and for whatever reason it came formatted in NTFS  not that i was expecting it to be different. I go to the schools computer lab with my class and i have to present, the only thing is i couldnt. The apple peice of crap couldnt write to the hard drive so it freaked out on me and wouldnt boot the program. Long story short i failed and all because of apple not supporting a pretty standard format even my exFat wouldnt write. And this is why i dont like them. If you read through all this youre awesome and thanks for bering with me

The CPU can last a long time as long as adequate cooling and power is provided. The mobo can die either randomly after a few years or due to bad power delivery. So if you clean the dust regularly, buy a good power supply( overkill is recommended) and replace said power supply after a few years you should be good. About ram I think it's a hit or miss, I had 2 cases of bad ram sticks and one of them died within 1 year of purchase.
Gpus die easily after 3 years manufacturers dont want you to keep them longer

If other people code your OS then it's not your OS. Get your ass down and learn how to code. Then you might realize that C++ is not the language to write an OS. After that, you will look into what parts is an OS consisted of and realize no volunteer will ever PM you on Skype about writing them for free. After that you will look into what compatible software exists for your OS and you will realize there is none and you will have to rewrite everything from office to web browsers, just to do" everything". After that you will realize that it is anything but lightweight and that all the engineers at GNU, The Linux Foundation, Google, Apple and Microsoft do not just sit all day eating your cash( ok the last one maybe yes).

And after all of that you will install Arch

If they are just get the cheapest mobo you can get for that haswell cpu and invest the rest on a r9 380x or something. Prices will vary depending on your area.  What you need to keep in mind though is that the next time you will do an upgrade you might end up wanting to upgrade the cpu, in which case you will be left with the dilemma of getting an older generation i5 or i7 and keeping the mobo or buying the full mobo+cpu+ram package, as skylake and beyond are focusing on ddr4.
The other option is to sell the cpu and the ram if they are still working and add that money to the budget

You need to expand it. For some reason on my laptop the option was left to use size suggested by windows. Windows suggested 2gb I think but the size it allocated was less than a quarter of that. I increased it to 4gb and it is smooth ever since. Well, smooth for an HDD that is of course.

    1. Post a comment below telling us what graphics card you're using in your rig and why you want an upgrade to AMD's Polaris lineup. The two winners will be selected at random, so no, the content of your comment doesn't REALLY matter, but this is more fun than seeing 800 posts of "I want it" or "gibe nao pls." One comment (entry) per user.

Actually I'd get the version without a GPU on it and the thunderbolt GPU enclosure. That way you can actually game decently with like a 480 or 1060 when at home but carry it around and not have too much heat and such when you need it on the move.

GPU enclosures for laptops really need to become the next thing and such they're still portable when needed and deal with the problem of gpu power and heat infinitely better than even the most robust, back breaking heavy laptop could ever hope to.

If I was you, I'd start by getting a 6500 + any DDR4 mobo + 8gb. Then, put your current FX, mobo and RAM for sale. Do the same for the GPU.

Reason to upgrade CPU first and GPU later is because if can sell either of your old stuff to get the new GPU, where as going with a GPU upgrade first doesn't allow you to sell your older platform to get a new one.

This is going to be so expensive it might be better to just buy a cheap laptop and build a real gaming rig at home. You are looking at 600 $ for the NUC + 500 $ for the razer core + 800$ for the cintiq + the ssd, the ram and the windows license ( i suppose ?) for the NUC which are at least 300$ in total. Also you will need to buy the gpu for the razer core + the keyboard/mouse/display which will be at least 150-200 $. So it's a total of 2400$ without the gpu and the power bank.

With this amount of money you can invest 1000$ on a very decent laptop and have over 1600 $ for your gaming rig, which is enough to buy you a really good gaming setup + some good peripherals like a mechanical keyboard etc.

It might also be better for you this way since you won't attract any potential unwanted attention from people making fun of your funny hardware at school.

EDIT : Don't get crazy about powerful laptops, I did the grave mistake of buying a laptop with a discrete gpu and try to game on it and it thermal throttles a lot. Just get a laptop with an i7 and an ssd and spend the rest on your gaming rig it's the best solution right now. I would do the same if I could but I have to move to different cities 4 times every year so it's not that easy for me.

HeadsUpHigh got a reaction from Little Bear in Silly Question
Graphics are by their nature more complex and thus require specialised hardware to be used so they can be executed efficiently, which is why we have gpus.

If you are asking why graphics are hard for the CPU to render, that's because the CPU is a generic processing unit which in turn comes with the downside of not being very efficient on specialised tasks.

If you are asking why graphics software is harder to design and more complex, that's because a) graphics are by default more complex, and b) because the specialisation of the gpu comes with the cost of reduced generic capabilities and thus requires the programmer to completely adapt to the high-parallel programming paradigm that they use.

Just to give you an example, if you are using a switch/if statement on a cpu -bound code block, worst case scenario you end up flushing the cache and lose a few circles. If you use a switch/if statement on let's say shaders, the result of calculating the statement might be to have half of the shaders on a compute unit to run 1 type of shader and the other half another. What will happen is that all of them will run the same shader and then switch to the other one, resulting in half of your hardware processing power being wasted.

Oh no, a company lied. That's a first.
If you have a PCIe SSD and an RX 480, you put your money in the wrong places. Also, with the SMCs on the motherboard they have their own specs, meaning that it's possible for certain components to run even with the increase power draw and whatnot. Kinda like how VRMs can go to 125C whilst the GPU itself has a separate thermal limit.
