  1. I could see some weird form of windows being mandated in SC with the right incentives; not OSX / Macs though, doesn't seem like something they would do
  2. Especially since South Carolina is third highest in porn consumption... because "human trafficking" sounds more flashy and important
  3. Legislators were suggesting this be some form of hardware level device: anti-porn "chip", if they even know what that means...
  4. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/19/south_carolina_calls_for_smutfree_pcs/ South Carolina is attempting to crack down on porn accessibility, starting by locking new PCs from viewing porn out of the box: Legislators claim this a non-partisan issue that must be addressed quickly: There is a loophole however in this proposed law; pay $20 to confirm you are "of age" if you want to unlock porn on your new desktop: The Bill Itself (or part of it): as you can see there would be criminal punishments for individuals violation this law by removing the lock... Opinion: this sounds like more social conservatives trying to micromanage citizen's lives while extracting a bit of cash in the meantime. Perfect example of big government at its worst. Update: Reuters has picked up the story: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-south-carolina-pornography-idUSKBN149251?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter
  5. I still get 2-3 hours PLAYING GAMES on my 2014 macbook pro with a dedicated GT 750m.
  6. easy bridge the network with a cheap AP and take the ethernet line out of the AP and plug it into the WAN on your own router and use double NAT problem solved
  7. yeah its called arp spoofing and it used to be a rather big issue until browsers rolled out HSTS basically with by poisoning the arp cache person 2 can make person 1's computer think it has to send its traffic through person 2's computer to get to the internet. Person 2 can see where you are going but not what you are doing if the websites / apps you are using have HTTPS / SSL enabled. Regardless, if person 2 knowns what they are doing they can proxy all your connections and serve you unencrypted connections to services (although this should be thwarted by most modern HSTS implementations; not allowing you to access previously encrypted services from an insecure connection) It is also possible for the attacker to redirect your request to an alternate or non existent domain to thwart HSTS, of which there is no good solution at this time. Bottom line, if you don't trust people on a LAN, use a VPN / Tor etc
  8. Apple's new macbook pro lineup features a new method for interacting with first party and partner applications. However, the concept of a multifunction, display-based function row has already been seen on laptops as far back as 3 years ago. Case and point, the Lenovo X1 carbon Gen2: Apple macbook: What do you know? Is that a fingerprint reader AND a touchscreen for the function keys? Must be a patent infringement... I'm not going to get too salty here, but I did find it odd that something Apple claims to be an "innovation" in computer interaction has already shown up on Windows laptops. It is important to add that a laptop such as the X1 Carbon Gen 2 has not and will never see the application support and functionality of the new MacBooks' touch bar, but it was still there none the less. 9. *sigh* the year is 2016 and security courses involve lessons on blindly running skiddie tools...
  10. and I thought my Cyclone IV with 115000 logic units was fast...
  11. I can take a quick look at it if you want; I'll need some background on the app OFC. Send me a PM with source (commented please) and libs if needed (github link preferable) Unless you're doing crypto or networking I don't know how much you need someone to pentest your software though...
  12. IIRC mubix used a lan turtle not USBarmory
  13. I'd love to get my hands on a razer blade for CUDA / OpenCL development on the go. Ability to use the razer core would also be nice to get 10gb ethernet and PCIe FPGAs / DSPs
  14. etherium is different than other blockchain systems as opposed to mining and confirming cryptocurrency transactions, etherium is focused on providing decentralized compute power *something GPU's would perform best at rather than the rather useless ASIC cards used just for crypto)
  15. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/07/28/vpn_users_in_uae_face_544k_fine/ UAE has joined the ranks of government idiocy concerning technology by issuing a royal edict that effectively bans VPNs... The new decree details the circumstances and repercussions of such an offense: As international governments such as UK, USA and Russia are clamping down on privacy services; UAE has taken a drastic step against internet privacy
  16. I was just finishing the formatting on my post; now that I have revised my post I would request that this be moved back to tech news I checked all recent posts and fond nothing

  18. all you really have to worry about is that you don't get any serious viruses on your computer until Gigabyte patches this
  19. as @patrickjp93 mentioned, you'd have to give software total system access to thereby modify the shutdown sequence to inject malicious code to the UEFI. If shady software has total system access, you're already fucked. The only major issue behind this exploit is should you manage to get such software installed on your system, re-installing the OS won't do anything to remove it... To be truly effective this would have to be combined with phishing, malicious physical hardware or a 0-day allowing software the privileges to exploit this.
  20. UPDATE: Added to main post that security researchers now believe that all Gigabyte Products Sandy Bridge - Broadwell and effected
