Honestly yeah about the unifying thing. We've seen it succeed via conrail (yup that was profitable!) but ofc it was then sold to private peeps. Hoping that the case down in mobile is won by amtrak as it will set precedence for expansion of services. Also in terms of fixing things not broken, the average age of a short distance passenger coach with amtrak is like 40+ and diesel locomotives are quickly approaching 30. They're very much EOL but Amtrak is taking the opportunity to make everything very futureproof for expansion while they're at it.
