I'm reading from all over the net that the 980's power draw is about 165 watts (card only, not system).
Now my questions is, If a power supply that was able to power a GTX 260 Core 216 (with a power draw of 178 watts), could the same PSU keep a 980 running?
I did the math of the cpus as well compared to the older one and it just about evens out.
Core2 E7300 48watts
GTX 260 C216 178watts
--------------------------------
Total 226watts
i5 4690k 75watts
GTX 980 165watts
--------------------------
Total 240 watts
Now before you guys bust my balls, I know there are other components involved so on and so forth. The system power consumption over all is more than what I indicated above.
Given every component (besides the cpu and gpu) are the same, should the same PSU be able to handle the newer cpu and gpu? It's a 14 watt difference. PSU has 2 12V rails each with 18A.
By the way, the newer system will have an SSD and no optical drive. That should make up for the 14 watt difference.
