  1. I am currently running no graphics card. My rig is still being built which means I'm using a $300 laptop from walmart. The graphics card I planned in using was a gtx 960 but these are such better values. The graphics card is one of the last peices I need but my summer lawnmower job will end soon and I only made $35 a mow on it anyway (this wouldn't be as much of a problem if it hadn't been so dry that I couldn't mow for a month). So all I could do is buy a $30 graphics card so I could browse the Internet and get basic functionality. Please geeevvv me either will be apprieciated
  2. well that question answered itself. I forgot that to even use it i would need a product key. It would be sooo much easier to buy a genuine copy.
  3. So, I was playing with an old hard drive from a broken computer in my school's computer lab. The drive could no longer boot and would automatically reboot every time the windows logo would appear (no, repair disk couldn't fix it). I had a bootable kali flash drive handy and started poking around to see what was there. I came across the folder C:/recovery and popped it open. I found a compressed file called winre.wim and extracted it. You can see the contents in the attached pic. I copied the extracted file to my flash drive and brought it home to experiment with (as it look like bare-bones bootable windows to my unexperienced eye). I wasn't able to to boot from any .efi files, but i was able to run the setup program. It was all ready to install 7 to my computer (which I would do in a heartbeat because i despise anything newer) but an error message appears saying that its missing the boot .wim file. So... Is persueing this further worth mine or anyone's time? Or with this is it possible to find the missing files and make a "Frankenstein" os if you will? And if the second one will i have to find it on the old drive or can it just be downloaded online?
  4. I know its an old system but its a great one and I'm counting on this site to help mine go for another 15 years. I'm having trouble with playing dvds. It can play games of either type of disk for hours on end, but i throw in a dvd video and it'll start studdering in about thirty to forty minutes or so. It's really puzzling me because most of my game disks are more scratched up than my dvds. It seems to be a time triggered thing because unless there is obvious damage to the disk there's no problem till that time frame. Also, when playing dvds, usually at startup it will make horrible clicking noises (another phenomena that is absent during game play). So is there hope? Can It be solved simply with a new laser installation or is it just getting too old?
  5. it found it but said it doesnt contain a valid partion table does this mean it needs formating?
  6. In the final phase of fixing a former xp machine. installed a new hard drive for storing pics and what not. linux mint 17.3 cinamin wont detect it although the computer will (or at least all the bios shows the proper info associated with the new hard drive). ive tried typing blkid in terminal and it only shows the main hard drive info. please help and be specific with any terminal commands because i barley know what im doing. thanks.
  7. So I decided that hooking my PC up to my tv wasn't going to work out for me( spacing issues). So I'm looking for a cheap 1080p entry level monitor, nothing fancy. I was browsing and found the viewsonic va2246m at about $100. It supposedly has 5ms refresh rate which I hear is good for casual gaming but I don't currently know the input lag or the display frequency( I mostly skimmed the specs and may have missed something). Do you guys think this is acceptable or a waste? Please feel free to make your own suggestions thanks! If the info is needed, ill mostly be playing action RPG games i.e.: gta, fallout, ect and I'm getting a gtx960 paired with an amd fx6300.
  8. thanks guys i think ill go with the asus. i know some of you said the asrock is good but ive heard of it overheating when overclocking so ill stick with the ones with a clean record. i appreciate all the help with the decision
  9. so i was recommended a 970 board for my 6300 cpu specificly the msi 970 gaming and asus 970 aura. these are both beutiful boards and ive heard great things about the msi board but i dont know enough about the asus to make an informed decision and i cant find any reliable sounding reviews on youtube i like the asus but dont want to let myself get sucked into blowing $100 because it has flashy lights but no real world proformance someone please give an honest opinion. in case its needed, ill be using a gtx 960 and the system is for 1080p gaming thanks!
  10. I'm planning my build and I intend on using and amd fx 6300 cpu but I'm still fuzzy on the mobo. I'm thinking the asus m5a99fx pro 2.0. Is this overkill, enough or too little? Thanks!
  11. I want the keyboard because I've never been able to expirience a mechanical keyboard but have wanted to for a while. I've decided that brown sounds like it would suit me best. I'm also trying to build my first computer and with the $600 price tag and being that I just turned 16 and can't find a job, it pains me to shell out too much money on something that I'm not even 100% sure is for me.
  12. This build is still in the planning stages but this is what im going to get: atx motherboard 4gig gtx960 strix dual channel 8gig ram generic hard drive generic ssd bluray drive fx 6300 cpu 4fans counting cpu fan various leds integrated into the case
  13. I've been playing with psu calculators and they all seem to give a different numbers. I've gotten numbers from 300-650 watts! Could someone recommend a reliable calculator? Also I've heard that it's best to buy a power supply about 100 watts over what you really need for efficiency reasons. Do I add this number to what the calculator spits out or does it factor in this number on its own? Thanks
  14. For the record no purchases have been made at this time. While I'm at it assuming i use a $200 graphics card, will a rig like this play gta 5 at ok settings?
