Purgent got a reaction from Actual_Criminal in Do you think my poor friend would take offense if I gifted him a PC?
I agree with a bit of what has already been said, mostly around helping him get a job, as that would be a more positive impact to his ability to support himself and his family.
The blind spot here is that for many, including myself, video games are an escape from reality, whatever it is. Is the optics of being unemployed and being gifted a gaming PC poor to his significant other? Maybe, but that's not your place to worry. Technology and games play a massive role in the mental welfare of many people today, and can help get them through a tough time, regardless of what it is.
There is not a perfect answer here, but I'll say this - giving your friend a PC because you recognize he otherwise cannot afford one himself is not some sort of crime, and you seem like you have a decent bit of self awareness. As with anything, it's not about what you say or do, but how you say it or go about it. You know your friend best, so only you have the right answer here.

Purgent got a reaction from starry in Micro Center, Please buy Fry's Electronics! - Share your stories
This doesn't make any sense... why would microcenter have incentive to buy a failing competitor?
I think what you want is for them to simply expand and build a store near you, which, as someone who lives 15 mins from a microcenter... I understand.

Purgent reacted to Middcore in Should i repaste my RTX 3080 Suprim X for better temps & performance?
Unless you can be sure your system is configured exactly the same way as the test system with regards to cooling, airflow, etc. then we can't compare the two temperatures. Also presumably the review card had the exact same paste job on it yours did unless the reviewers mentioned "yeah we took the card apart and repasted it with (whatever)."
Your cards temps are fine, they're far below the level that would cause any throttling or damage. Stop obsessing and enjoy a card very few people are lucky enough to get their hands on, for pity's sake.

Purgent reacted to Tristerin in Found Out Some Interesting Info on 3080's Calling Local Computer Shops
No one, and I mean no one, repeat no one, is getting screwed. These are choices to own these commodities. These arent a necessity they are an option.
Blame the consumerism. Not the manufacturer, they are going to charge whatever the market allows for the most amount of profit.

Purgent got a reaction from Mister Woof in GTX 3070 Gaming Performance
I just upgraded from a 1080ti to a 3070, but saw little fps increase in Warzone. Reason is it is very CPU dependent.
Upgraded from a 2700x to 5600x and saw massive differences in every game I play.

Purgent reacted to Arika in Linus should stop his $GME "Investment"
you sound like a hedge fund manager.
Stocks are a brutal game, if people can't handle "normal people" making more money than hedge funds, then maybe those hedge funds need to bow out.

Purgent reacted to Dtx1 in Linus should stop his $GME "Investment"
Okay guys, we all had fun at the WAN Show right now, especially seeing Linus squeal. He thought he'd be in for $10K at most and could ride it out as a meme. $50K is not chump change and who knows if this publicity stunt he just accidentally did couldn't be construed as market manipulation.
I don't think it's funny anymore and I would accept a "OK, I fucked up" from Linus, followed by a more reasonable donation to a charity. I don't want to see LTT or Linus get F-ed by some oversight body he didn't know existed and I would still enjoy his content and believe in his integrity if he bowed out of this mess. There are real jobs, real people, real lives involved and as much as i want to stick it to the big hedgefond guys i don't find it funny to see LTT or Linus get sucked into this.

Purgent reacted to TheBean in GOOGLE PIXEL WALLPAPERS MOVING!!
first off, you dont need to use all caps here...
I dont have a pixel so I cant guide you exactly, but i hope there is an option in the settings somewhere to turn this off. might be called something like scrolling wallpaper or parallax scrolling or something like that. if that option is not there and you are forced to keep it like that, its just because the current wallpaper dimensions are larger than the screen size. if you pick a wallpaper specifically for your pixel phone, that issue should not persist.
Edit: How To Turn OFF Google Pixel And Pixel XL Parallax Effect (Moving Background) (techjunkie.com)

Purgent reacted to S0M3D1CK in I thought of a way to cure scalpers
Nvidia and AMD could easily cure this scalping problem in a very simple manner. All they have to do is update their terms of service agreements and have their retailers do the same. All they need to do is add this to their terms of service. Reselling our product at a hyper inflated price (115% MSRP including shipping costs) damages customer confidence in our brand. We reserve the right for legal action for damaging our brand recognition. If scalpers started getting sued they would stop.

Purgent reacted to dizmo in Stop Children What's That Sound... GPU shortages :P
Not wanting to produce more than there is demand for isn't unprecedented. They made tons of GPUs in the past, they got stuck with them because the mining boom dropped off. That's simply bad business, especially on a product with incredibly thin margins. Not only do they have to sell them, they have a very short window in which to sell them, as other cards will be coming down the pipeline.
Funny, you claim they have very complicated algorithms that tell them what to make...and yet, here we are. You know what they couldn't predict? A pandemic. It's like you can't comprehend what's actually going on in the world.
GPU producers don't make every component. They depend on other factories as well. As such, there is multitudes of ways cards can be slow to produce, especially as every industry saw shutdowns and slows in transportation of goods. Take a cell phone as an example. There's parts from 43 different companies in a phone. That's 43 potential bottlenecks.
I don't see how you'd retaliate over something like this. What exactly do you want to do? Who are you going to cry to?
No one. Because no one cares.
Just wait a year or so for it to pass like everyone else.
Ah. So you really just have no idea how production or manufacturing work. Got it.

Purgent got a reaction from The_russian in What really is the best way to use your battery? (Mainly Mobile and Laptops)
The amount of time spent worrying about it and modifying (either conscious or sub-consciously) your habits to extend battery life a trivial amount is worth far more than just living your life, worrying about more important things, and just replacing the damn battery some day down the road.

Purgent got a reaction from maizenblue in Has anyone gotten a 3000 series GPU signing up for EVGA's website notification?
BB drops are usually on Tuesdays.
EVGA 3080 FTW3 was $809.
5900x was going for $599, but I was only allowed to purchase one card or one processor, not both.

Purgent got a reaction from maizenblue in Has anyone gotten a 3000 series GPU signing up for EVGA's website notification?
I was able to successfully snag a 3080 FTW3 at the Cincinnati Microcenter location last Thursday after a two hour wait in the cold. They had over 60 cards come in that day, plus a ton of the Ryzen 5000 processors.
There was also a massive drop on Best Buy today where I was able to get multiple 3090s and 3070s.
They are obtainable without bots and without much effort.

Purgent got a reaction from kelvinhall05 in Opinion: Consumer graphic cards need to be divorced from BTC
No one is using GPU to mine BTC anymore. There are ASICs for that. GPU availability is simple supply and demand. We go through this every release outside of pandemics, too.
