DT 990 is a V shaped headphone, they have a good low end (bass) for an open back, and they also have a lot of energetic treble that some people find too bright. If you listen to a lot of vocals I would stay away from the DT 990, because it has recessed mids. Soundstage is also wide and positional audio is decent.

They come in 3 different versions. 32, 250 and 600 ohm. The higher the ohm, the more difficult to drive. (600 ohm and an iPod wouldn't mix)
With the higher ohm versions, I believe the bass transitions to a more tighter and deeper impact, whilst the treble gets smoother and less emphasised. I've never owned a DT pair, but I've been told that they are pretty comfortable to wear.

It all comes down to amps with this one. I think on high gain, the e10k should be able to drive the 250 ohm version. Fulla 2 is also another option.

Hi all. Finally got the last piece to finish my PC. (for now at least) Thought I may as well share the tale of how she came to be. I've yet to come up with a good name for it, so if you have any suggestions pls halp, am not that creative or original lmao. Anyways, here goes:

Summer 2016: Got an FX 8350/990FX Sabertooth for $150 from a close friend, bought a PNY GTX 580 from @Bubblewhale and another off Ebay for a total of $90 for TWO 580's (already had case/PSU/HDD/RAM.) Between that and the FX 8350 at 4.9Ghz, I have NO IDEA how that poor TX850W didn't explode. Long story short it was the old 80plus model from 2009 that was brand new in box I got for $20. She kept me warm in the winter, that much is for sure. All of this was housed in my NZXT S210, complete with 7 fans. I actually had to do the same thing @Ryan Leech did for his 3-way SLI GTX 465 build, and mounted the radiator fans OUTSIDE the case because there was no clearance for them inside the case because of the motherboard. It was ghetto asf and worked great too. To summarize that, a $45 case with a $15 fan controller, and literally $100 worth of Corsair AF120/AF140 + 2 Noctua Redux fans for the Kraken.

    Here's pictures:

Here's the 580s in all their glory. The one from Bubblewhale is pristine (top card), and of course the Ebay 580 has ALL the stickers peeled off complete with irremovable adhesive residue!

And this was my whole setup back then. I just loved the sleeper aesthetic, and knowing I had 2 old as dirt GPUs in SLI for no other reason that it was cheap performance when it scaled.

Then I hit a wall. An oddly-specific-but-I-should-have-seen-it-coming wall. VRAM. I tried to tweak settings. I thought I could do 1080p with low textures and medium-high settings otherwise and be alright. That just wasn't the case. There was just too much stutter because it would choke out on it's measly 1.5GB of GDDR5. So I came up with another idea. Having built this entire PC with airflow for dual GPU's in mind, I wanted to keep that going strong. So I did. I traded some old Dell Vostro prebuilt I had for an EVGA GTX 570 2.5Gb edition via craigslist. They were sort of rare, but not to the point where the price was ridiculous. I got a matching card off ebay for $70. So yes, I went from SLI 580's to SLI 570's, BUT they both overclocked VERY well (I'm talking 900mhz and that was classified territory) and with the entire extra gig of VRAM, they performed great. Not to mention power consumption was down, heat output into the room was down, although noise remained about the same. I could turn the settings up now. High textures with medium settings (that's a very BROAD example with no game in specific mentioned, so obviously it depends on the game at the end of the day) was about where she could hold a steady 60fps in most titles. I was in love. I even got a HB SLI bridge off my local CL for a $5 bill just for luls. And no, it didn't change the performance. I tested it.

This was her from late 2016 thru march 2017:

Then something clicked. I found some brain cells or something idk man. I love all these pictures above a lot, but I can't believe I myself used them in retrospect. They were SO LOUD. Nothing else can be said. It was basically a hair dryer after 5-10 minutes under load. I can't stand even hearing my PC now lol. So I got tired of it. I wanted a quiet fast modern thing, not riding the 7 year old once was new and nice wave. I got my beloved R9 Fury NITRO (another card from @Bubblewhale for a great price of $210 back then) to replace the 570's in April 2017. She went into the S210 and I actually don't have a picture of that. I do have the Fury halfway unboxed from the day I got it, seen here:

I then got my i7 4790k+Z97 board from the same guy I got the FX platform from, for the low price of the FX chip/board+$150. I as well don't have any pictures of this but that's how she was until about 2 months ago. I got sick of looking at the turd, the sleeper aesthetic had worn off and she just looked like crap to me. I ordered a Phanteks P350X with the black/white interior and another AF140 for the radiator to match the one I already had for a complete push/pull. I pulled 2 of the AF120's out of the S210 for exhaust fans. It was time for a nice improvement in the looks department.

    Here's pics:

    Another one:

But there was 2 problems still. Number one, storage. I had a WD Black 1TB, and it was/is fine, just slow. Buddy of mine got an SSD, and as soon as I experienced it myself, there was no going back. I ordered a 1TB Adata SU800 SSD. I again don't have any pictures of this, but its just an SSD. I replaced my HDD altogether, it sits in a box as a trusty backup. Made a world of difference 10/10 would recommend an SSD for ANY computer. As for the other problem. It wasn't a big problem, just a minor inconvenience really. I was used to my pretty high airflow S210 tricked out like no other $40 case was meant to be, so when I got this case my GPU temps really did go up quite a bit. I used to run <70*C on the Fury in the old case, but in the P350X I was more around 76-77*C under load. That killed me, even though it's 100% safe. So I had to do something that the case wasn't intended to do, and bought another fan. But where do you put it? In the empty PCI slot covers of course. I pulled out the 4 slot covers and did some measuring, then ordered an 80mm red LED fan complete with a dust filter as well (all held in tightly with zip-ties.) Made load temps go from 76-77*C, to about 74*C peak after many hours of gaming or stress testing. It's really ghetto but it almost looks alright and it works wonders surprisingly. I also got an actual stick from outside, cut it to size, and painted that shit red to hold up the GPU. Compare the GPU sag now vs before and also peep the lil red fan:

And there ya have it folks. My baby. I'm sure this was lame but I wanted to do something so I spent 45 minutes writing this crap. Help me name her and leave your thoughts below if you feel so inclined.

I have the ATH-AD700X, good soundstage and imaging, very airy but lacking bass impact.....if soundstage and imaging are the main concern (for hearing footsteps and other audio cues), then yes, AD700X would be nice. Ignore those that come in to recommend the ATH-M50/50X, closed back, very narrow soundstage, muddied mids but with boosted bass, not ideal for gaming. K712 should be good. DT990 would be a good gaming headphone as it has good soundstage, clear mids and treble (which may be too hot for many, would suggest you audition it IF you're thinking of getting it). Beyerdynamic has its house signature sound which is characterized by sparkly treble, (I enjoy it immensely because I'm something of a treble head) and somewhat boosted bass....V shape sound in other words.

Jz1 reacted to Max_Settings in Gaming Headphone Misconceptions
Recently I've been seeing a lot of misconceptions floating around the audio subforum among people who are looking for gaming headphones. For starters I am talking about people looking at actual headphones, not gaming headsets. If you have gotten that far, congratulations, you've seen the light and now understand how much better headphones are than gaming headsets. But, I still see a lot of misconceptions of what people are looking for. The most common thing I see people say is, "I want a pair of open back headphones with a wide soundstage to hear footsteps in games." To this I always say, "Why?" This is a very common misconception I see among people. Let me start off by saying that I agree with this notion that there are two categories of gamers and gaming headphones. In this thread I'm going to be using two headphones as my examples, the Fostex T50RP MK3, and the Monoprice Retro.

The first category is probably the most common, and that is the footstep category. These people are competitive gamers and want headphones to hear footsteps as accurately as possible. The misconception comes with them wanting a wide soundstage. I understand the logic, if you can hear sounds far away you can tell where they are. However, that is not true. What is more important is imaging. People don't seem to get the difference of the two so here's the explanation. Soundstage is how far away distant sounds sound like they are coming from. Once you have that soundstage, imaging is how accurately the headphones can place the sound within that defined soundstage. What happens in headphones is that headphones with a very wide soundstage tend to have poor imaging. Sounds sound like they are coming from far away, but the accuracy of where they are is very vague. Now don't get me wrong, you need some sound stage, headphones with zero soundstage also have poor imaging because there is no sense of left, right, front, and back. What you want is headphones with moderate soundstage and the best imaging possible. That way you have some sense of distance, but with the accuracy to pinpoint where they sounds are exactly coming from. This is why I will say to the day I die the Fostex T50RPs are the best gaming headphones there are for competitive gaming. They don't have a crazy wide soundstage, but their imaging is insane. Probably the best imaging on any headphone under $1000, I honestly can't believe how well they image, you can hear footsteps with scary pinpoint accuracy. That is why you will often see me quote this status update of mine.
Also, I don't see why everyone is obsessed with gaming headphones being open. I have no issues with gaming in open headphones, but honestly I would say I prefer closed because it blocks out the sound of my PC and keeps any sound from going into my mic. I get why people think they need open, because they want that wide soundstage, which is also another misconception, just because a headphone is open doesn't mean it has wide soundstage, but alas more often than not open headphones tend to have wider soundstage. But like I said, imaging is what matters more for footsteps.

The thing I also like about the T50s is that they have enough low end to also be fun in games without it becoming overpowering, they really are just amazing gaming headphones. Which leads us into our next category of gamers and gaming headphones, the fun category.

The fun category is for the gamer who doesn't care about footsteps. Basically, this is for people who play single player games. In this category you will often want crazy low end, and soundstage. Now if you don't play games with explosions or gunshots, then you might want just really high fidelity headphones for beautiful sounds. But for example if you are playing GTA single player, you want to have some fun. That is where headphones like the Monoprice Retros come into play. These are cheap headphones, but my goodness these are fun. These have so much low end they are almost like wearing a subwoofer. They also have close to the widest sound stage of any headphones I've heard. In any single player game these are amazing. The gunshots and explosion feel almost real with intensity, and things that happen off in the distance sound very far away. However, with that wide soundstage comes poor imaging. BF1 is my test of footsteps in games because Battlefield games have very well done audio, and in that game the Retros barely even produce footsteps. Even people less than 10ft away you won't hear sometimes, which often gets me killed. On the flip side the gunshots and explosions sound amazing, but for a multiplayer games you need to hear those footsteps. Switch over to something like Watch Dogs 2, and you are almost laughing with how hilariously fun these are. For $30 these sound amazing, even in music, expect a full review soon.

So to summarize this entire thing. If you are doing competitive gaming, or anything online where you need to hear footsteps you want moderate soundstage with the best possible imaging. For single player games with gunshots and explosions you want bass and crazy soundstage.

Perfect example of competitive footstep headphones. (They also can be fun because of the bass) *disclaimer they are super hard to drive, you will need a Magni 3 minimum*

Darker means more bassy. In this case there is not a large difference but the HD650s are still considered "darker" than the HD600s. Likewise bright means treble-inclined. The HD800s are bright, Beyerdynamic headphones are bright. You get the gist.

Why not get 650s if you are going to spend extra money so this is a fair comparison? Personally I would wait. The 650s many find a more enjoyable can. The 600s are the kings of neutrality. Very flat sound signature with narrow sound stage and light bass. The 650s add sound stage and low end at the sacrifice of a little bit of detail. But it makes for a more enjoyable sound.

Zowie mouses are good options if you need a great sensor and more importantly a nice shape. I think they make the best ambidextrous mice right now on the market.
    I personally use the ZA12.

    To answer your question specifically

Pro: Both sides of ZA12 have the Mouse button 4 and 5 and you can decide which side you want to use.
Pro: Really comfortable mouse, no annoying pinky resting points like ergo mouses.
Pro: Not really a pro, but there's 3 different sizes, ZA11, ZA12, and ZA13 being the smallest.
Con: You might press the other side buttons by accident when gripping it.

It comes down to how you grip mouses as well, you might prefer the FK series if you like lower profile design mouses if you fingertip. I own the FK1 and FK2 and they are nice for fingertip but lack a mouse ass if you should say so it feels unresponsive at times, but then again it comes down to how you grip.
