  1. Insane build! Were you unhappy with the norco that you decided to spend so much more on the supermicro cases? I think I would have just gotten a couple norco 24bays and used the money saved to go 5TB or 6TB. Accessing the drives in the back can be a pain depending on your rack situation.
  2. Merry Christmas! This year, I only got a few more drives. I had one three-year-old WD 2TB fail gracefully (no data loss). I'm now up to over 90TB usable or 103.5TB nominal. I'm surprised no one has passed me since I'm not adding much space anymore. Here's my update, I tried to bold the changes Hardware CASE: Lian Li PC-A70F with Lian Li EX-23NB, EX-34NB, Sans Digital HDDRACK5, Mediasonic 4-bay Probox, and 8-bay Probox PSU: Corsair RM 750 MB: Asus P8P67 Pro CPU: Intel i7-2600k at 4.43ghz HS: Noctua NH-C12P SE14 RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600 HBA: Intel SASUC8i, some cheap 2x sata pcie x1 card, Mediasonic 2x esata card, Supermicro SAS2LP-MV8 SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 120GB HDDs: 1x WD Green 6tb ($210) 2x Seagate 5tb ($120) 2x WD Green 4tb 5x Seagate 4tb 14x WD Green 3TB 1x WD Red 3TB 5x WD Green 2TB (1 died) 1x Seagate 2TB 1x Samsung 2TB 1x 500GB single-platter Seagate (Scratch) Software and Configuration: Windows 7 - All JBOD. I use junctions to merge the drives, works perfectly for me. Usage: I use the storage for movies and series, I have media players around the house that access it. I also have a 150/170 home line, so I can stream it to any remote location or to my mobile devices. Backup: What is this "backup" you speak of? Additional info: Most 3TB drives were bought for $110 or less in 2011 and 2012 and most 4TB drives were bought for $130 or less in 2013. 5TB were $120 and the 6TB was $210 (ouch) in 2014. Photo's:

  4. Yeah, if a drive were to fail in my setup and I was unable to recover the data, then I would lose the data on that drive. I prefer that scenario to the possibilities in RAID where you might lose your entire array if one drive fails and then you are unable to rebuild the array. You can see how many drives I have and I've never experienced data loss. I monitor the drive health over time and I'm able to pull the data off when I see it's failing.
  5. lol HDB representing. Top three positions are all from HDB now. Yeah, I'm American with FiOS. Yeah, I tried it and used to use it on my old system. I couldn't quite get it working properly with this newer system, so I just stuck with junctions. It works perfectly for me, so I haven't really tried other methods. I really like that Norco case, It's a great deal all things considered.
  6. Nice :) I tried to clean it up a little following your original post.

Additional info: I think I've only added one drive since November 2011. I bought most of these 3TB drives at $110 before the Thailand floods. Photo's: Internal shot of the server. Not sure how best to take a pic, but I'll post this old pic in the mean time. I don't have the 570 anymore, I filled all the hdd bays, and I don't have the esata box in my case, I just wanted to see if it would fit. Drives as listed on Computer. Is Rudde from Norway? I may have seen him around.
  8. I used to add a hard drive every week or two, but since I filled up the case, I barely ever go in. i try to clean the filters once a month and I go in to clean out the dust about once a year.
  9. What full tower cases have the most hard drive bays? I don't mind using 4-in-3 or 3-in-2 adapters if need be.
  10. Does Linus accept tips or donations? I like the idea of just encouraging adblock users to donate $5 or $10 a year. The content creator makes more and the people who are ad sensitive don't have to deal with ads.
  11. Not impressed by iOS 7, but would be willing to switch back to iPhone if they come out with one that has a 4.7" screen or bigger.
  12. I find it odd that you upgraded the GPU fan, but are running the stock intel cooler. Upgrade your CPU heatsink, you should be able to get a good one for pretty cheap if you shop around and any decent cooler will be much better than the intel one.
  13. Riot in the streets! Picket those dirty hippies!
  14. PCPerspective Podcast http://www.pcper.com/podcast Best computer hardware podcast on the net - no doubt about it.
  15. I have FiOS and often do 10TB+ in a month, but I only have one 55TB server. Verizon hasn't said anything to me though.
