ion529 got a reaction from Faisal A in Looking for a laptop to run Solidworks
Were not doing to be doing any simulations or anything, it is purely just for the design aspect, anything that requires serious power can be sent to the college computers. The only thing we'll be doing on the laptop is just drawing and manipulating bodies. Sorry, I should have specified that in the original post. For example my GA502 does all of that stuff perfectly well, but if I wanted to anything more I would send it to my workstation.

ion529 got a reaction from kirashi in Untraceable Network Adapter
I'm looking to purchase for myself a lovely Alfa wireless adapter, however I would like it so that it cannot be traced back to me. Unfortunately there is no-one within reach who sells Alfa networking gear so that I could just buy it for cash. This means the only place I could potentially buy it is online, on amazon or something of the likes. However (and I'm still very new to this privacy game), I would have thought that would come with inherent privacy risks, that someone could somehow figure who purchased the card, (maybe even without having physical access to the card).

    Questions:

    1. Maybe I am just delusional. Could the adapter be traced and if so, how?

    2. Is there any steps I could take to mitigate this risk?

    Thanking you in advance.

awesome, glad it worked, rlly happy for you. if i were you i would be more careful when moving back to the tower, so you dont miss anything again.
there could even be a short in a wire, although unlikely. Just be careful, have a great day benchmarking!

ok, not trying to be your mom or anything, but dont panic. check all the cables, make sure they are plugged in correctly. could you have possibly damaged your components while moving them? Check to make sure your psu is switched on. if necessary, move back into your old case, and see if they still work.
if you have carpet, although unlikely, they could be damaged through static. maybe you are just missing something with the case. think about the differences between the bench and your case.
dont worry, i know how crappy the feeling is not having it work.
anyway, just to assure you, 99% of your build is probably still working fine, and even if something is broken, its probably just something small judging by the fact that it just worked. triple check everything. there could be a million things causing this.

    are they compatible?
enter your parts into pcpartpicker.com and it will tell you if they are compatible. is there enough wattage?

ion529 reacted to Mark77 in help with DNS/nameservers
In a nutshell, "mywebsite.com" has to be registered with a nameserver for the .com top-level domain (TLD).  The nameserver for the TLD will respond to queries for "*.mywebsite.com" by directing them to a subordinate nameserver listed in the database of .com domains.  The software that does this is typically called "BIND", "Berkeley Internet Name Database" named after the University it was developed at, UC Berkeley.

So basically you have to do 2 things:

    a)  Register with a TLD registrar.  There's a variety of vendors.  A highly advertised one is "GoDaddy".
    b)  Set up a name server for your domain using BIND (or similar) with details applicable to your own domain.  And typically at least one backup.  You can either do this yourself or get a commercial service provider to do it for you.

BTW, 192.168.x.x are not publicly routable Internet addresses, so if your web server is on such an address, it will never be publicly accessible unless you have the ports forwarded to a machine that is publicly accessible.

    This.
I have multiple websites running and host an teamspeak server off of it at the same time and so far no trouble. (Rpi 2)
Did have to buy a heatsink to combat the heat tho.

what kind of performance needs to be expected from the website? may as well consider dropping it on a raspberry pi.

Flashing the BIOS means that you are clearing the previous version and flashing the new one onto the ROM. This is easily done usually on the last tab in the BIOS in the "Advanced" mode. When you initiate the flashing process, it is 100% automated, provided that you have the storage medium with the new version readily available for the motherboard to grab. Shorthand: It means to update with a new version.

haswell refresh is when intel put new heatspreaders on the 4770k and 4670k to the 4790k and 4690k

Answers 1 and 2: You have to put the latest H81 BIOS onto a USB device and flash your BIOS to get it to work with Haswell Refresh CPUs.

Answer 3: Haswell Refresh = Devil's Canyon (Better TIM, 4.0 GHz for i7-4790K and 3.5 GHz for the i5-4690K, and Intel HD Graphics 4600)

Answer 4: A chipset (or PCH) is a chip on the motherboard that manages the storage medium, peripherals, and data flow between the CPU and memory.

They also made some small changes to the CPU themselves which warrant a bios update due to the changed behaviour when overclocking.

well the Bios can be Flashed ,,,  basically deleting the Bios or UEFI from the *Rom* (which technically is NOT read only , but I know what you meant) * and replacing it with an updated  bios version.

chipset is basically The motherboards Function firmware. controlling the video output, PCI-Express lanes, Basically it  is the highway intersection

to save me being confusing about explaining the chip set I took this from PCmag.
